Cape Town - A policeman was shot dead in a highjacking in Guguletu near Cape Town, on Wednesday, Western Cape police reported on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Captain Etienne Terblanche said two policemen in an unmarked vehicle had stopped at an intersection in the township around 18:00.
Five men approached on foot and fired several shots, killing the driver. His colleague was not hurt.
The gang drove off in the police vehicle along with their firearms. The vehicle was later recovered in nearby Nyanga.
The incident comes barely two days after national Commissioner Jackie Selebi vowed at a summit on police killings that they would in future use force to protect themselves.
