Johannesburg - A 25-year-old robber was shot dead after he and other four robbers ransacked a house in East Town Waterval near Northcliff on Tuesday, said police.
Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said five men armed with a firearm and a knife jumped over a gate and broke into the house through the kitchen door and confronted the 73-year-old owner about 07:30.
The owner and his 55-year-old wife were forced into their bedrooms and tied up with a trouser belt.
The robbers ransacked the house, broke open the safe and stole cash, jewellery, two cellphones and two firearms worth a total of about R10 000.
They fled by jumping over the gate.
The owner managed to untie himself, got another gun and followed the robbers.
He fired at the fleeing men and one was fatally shot in the head.
The four others escaped.
Police recovered the cellphones, cash, jewellery and one firearm. The other one was not recovered.
