Man killed over newspaper

2008-05-08 18:44

Johannesburg - A 30-year-old man was killed during an argument over a newspaper in Lusikisiki near Port St Johns, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Inspector Pumzile Njombela said a 49-year-old man lent his newspaper to the 30-year-old victim to use as cigarette paper on Wednesday.

When the 49-year-old went to the man's house to ask for his newspaper, a quarrel broke out between the men.

The 30-year-old allegedly pulled out a knobkierrie and struck at the other man's left arm.

The older man then allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the man between his collarbone and his neck - he died on the scene.

A post-mortem would be conducted on the body, Njombela said.

Police arrested the 49-year-old on Wednesday. He appeared before the Lusikisiki Magistrates Court on Thursday and his case was postponed.

He would appear before court again soon on a charge of murder, said Njombela.

Police arrest three men for fraud

In an unrelated incident, Port St Johns police arrested three men for fraud and swapping of ATM cards on Wednesday.

Njombela said the three men, aged 40, 46 and 48, were spotted by an off-duty traffic officer.

She suspected that something was amiss and approached the white VW Citi Golf in which the men were sitting. At her approach the men fled in the vehicle.

She reported the incident and another traffic officer chased and apprehended them on a bridge over the Umzimbubu river.

The men were found in possession of ATM cards and money.

They would appear before the Port St Johns Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of fraud, said Njombela.

Gunna says... While I agree that the police should be allowed to defend themselves I have a problem with the fact that 7 criminals were killed and only 3 pistols were recovered. Something is not right here! Read the article...
