Cape Town - ANC Western Cape secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha was stabbed in the neck at a meeting in the Boland on Thursday, the ANC said in a statement.
ANC national spokesperson Jessie Duarte said Skwatsha had been admitted to hospital.
"The ANC national office is presently awaiting further information on his condition," said Duarte.
"The African National Congress is deeply shocked at the knife attack," Duarte said.
The meeting was held following a decision of the Western Cape ANC to suspend the Boland regional executive for defiance of provincial directives on municipal matters.
"The ANC welcomes the arrest of the perpetrators and urges that those responsible be prosecuted without delay.
"There is no place in the ANC for behaviour of this nature, and no place in the ANC for people who commit such acts," said Duarte.
Western Cape police confirmed that one man had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Spokesperson Andre Traut said after the stabbing occurred at 18:45, a 30-year-old man had been arrested.
The man would appear in court soon.
