Cape Town - Record maximum temperatures in many towns and cities in the Western Cape - with Vredendal recording a maximum of nearly 50°C - had many people desperately seeking ways to cool off on Sunday.

The heat will hit the Eastern Cape on Monday, but somewhat cooler temperatures should follow on Tuesday. Very hot conditions are, however, expected to persist in the Western Cape, according to the weather service.

Johan Stander, forecaster at the Cape weather office, said long-term references showed at least five places where new record maximum temperatures were recorded on Sunday. The statistics department will be able to verify this on Monday.

Stander said Vredendal's previous record high temperature of 44°C was topped by Sunday's 48°C.

Paarl's previous high of 39.5°C was topped by 40°C.

The previous high for Langebaan, 42°C was equalled. Clanwilliam's previous high of 44.7°C was topped by 45°C on Sunday.

The city bowl's previous high of 38.3°C was topped by Sunday's 40°C.

High temperatures expected over large parts of the Western Cape are a concern especially for vineyards, who are busy harvesting.

Truter de Kock, chairperson for the Malmesbury agricultural society, said the grapes were losing moisture due to the high temperatures, which could lead to a smaller harvest. The temperature soared to 42°C in Malmesbury on Sunday.

"One day's heat won't cause much damage, but if the heat persists, it could lead to a poor harvest." Cooler temperatures are preferable during harvesting.

"The flavour of grapes used to make sauvignon blanc, in particular, is influenced by the heat," De Kock said.

No rain is forecast for the week and the department of water affairs again warned people to adhere to water restrictions.

In certain parts of the Eastern Cape, the mercury will also soar near the 40°C mark.

Mandisa Manetsa-Titisi of the Port Elizabeth weather office said 38°C was predicted for Graaff-Reinet and Umtata, while 37°C was expected in Uitenhage, Joubertina and Willowmore.

She predicted sunny weather for Port Elizabeth on Monday with an average maximum temperature of 28°C.

She said light showers were expected later on Monday over Aliwal North, Elliot, Maclear, Umtata and Port St Johns.
