Hazyview - In the next 16 days, houses will be built from scratch for 16 women in Mpumalanga, as part of the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence.
Building began in Nkanini and Masoyi trusts near Hazyview on Thursday, the first day of the campaign, and is expected to be completed by the last day, December 10.
"The houses will be built by men, boys, prisoners and volunteers and will be handed over within the next 16 days," assured spokesperson for the provincial department of local government and housing, Arthur Ndlovu.
Premier Thabang Makwetla, housing MEC Jabu Mahlangu and Mbombela mayor Regina Mhaule will keep track of the progress.
On December 10, MEC Mahlangu will personally hand over the houses, which will measure 50 square metres, to the women.
The 16 days campaign was introduced following the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991.
It starts on the International Day Against Violence Against Women and ends on International Human Rights Day.
