'The law has become a joke'

Dear Editor,

BBC reports that the Tanzanian high commissioner to South Africa was beaten unconscious by armed robbers at his own farewell dinner in Pretoria.

The envoy, Emmanuel Mwambulukutu, is said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Six other people were also taken to hospital after the attack, including the ambassador's wife. Some guests were threatened with rape.

The envoy told the robbers at one point: "Gentlemen, God bless you." They are said to have replied: "We don't care for God. Let's stab these dogs."

My plea is that this level of hate and callousness must be addressed in 2008 by drilling in on the true uncomfortable cases. If criminals are immigrating, stop it. If there is an upsurge of frustration and hatred, make it the number one priority. If morality and the law has become a joke, lead by example.

We cannot afford to be lead by a group of people who disregard the law so much that they would vote in those who are facing serious charges. If we don't have the law and true democracy, then we have nothing.

Pieter Joubert,
Pretoria

I say, bring back a law that is tougher on trespassers, as, if you are caught trespassing, you can be shot on the spot. Shooting should eradicate these criminals very quickly. Shoot to kill, cause that is all they deserve

outsidr 1/2/2008 1:56:55 PM
I have very little hope of the callous criminality in SA ever improving. Your average South African who is quick to complain about lawlessness, is often the first to break traffic laws, make rude gestures and disregard fellow citizens. Until there is the personal and political will and competent manpower to enforce a "broken window policy" attitude to crime as was done in New York some years ago, crime will be with us to stay.

TC 1/2/2008 2:05:02 PM
Only if the SA government (ANC) recognises the truth will they be able to start solving problems. Do not look for excuses, find the true causes and deal with them. Fact is, Mbeki will be remembered for excuses and denials, beating around the truth, and avoiding realities. May God give that his successor does much better.

oh no 1/2/2008 2:06:44 PM
that is rediculous to compare brutal MURDER with 'not obeying traffic laws'. There are traffic cops and appropriate fines and courts who attend to these issues. MURDER has become totally out of hand, and although reckless driving MAY lead to death, MURDER ALWAYS LEADS TO DEATH, and Government does NOTHING about it.~

The Truth 1/2/2008 2:09:36 PM
Doesn't that just tell us everything about the barbaric mentality of some "humans" in this country, drunk or not?

nicky 1/2/2008 2:13:51 PM
The problem with crime is that people have no compation for thee fellow man,ppl only think about themselves, because everybody is too busy to care, working to make money and feed their families, lets all just make the time to care for our fellow man and not only think about ourselves, and there needs to be more jobs, cause joblessness leads to crime

Nick 1/2/2008 2:16:41 PM
South Africa is spiralling out of control as regards the law. The goverment does not care about petty crime, but this is where all criminals start. Stop the Rot. Police must not tollerate "Highway use for Pedestrians" "Not stoping at Stop and Robot signals" "Loitering" for eveyone???????? -GIVE UP

Nothing 1/2/2008 2:22:36 PM
because then they would have to do something about it, the same with HIV/AIDS. Better to deny than to act on it! Govt won't do something about crime, because they have protection, body guards and high R90 million walls. They don't care about other lives lost through crime, as long as it is not theirs!

synical 1/2/2008 2:25:22 PM
Couple from P.E. robbed of R18000 for shopping while on vacation. While I don't condone the callousness with which criminals in South Africa commit crime, I think some acknowledgment of the social circumstances that are causing crime is needed. Some people have so much money and do nothing to improve lives of others who are less fortunate, so why expect mercy from a criminal who has grown up in poverty and has never gotten any kindness from you?

Disillusioned 1/2/2008 2:30:47 PM
I would like to know where else in the world would an ambassador of any country be attacked inside his own home for the sake of a robbery. This is an embarrassing state of affairs. We must look like a sick joke to the rest of the word. As far as our next potential state president, come on! ANC, is that the best you have to offer us as citizens of South Africa?

Jack The Beanstalk 1/2/2008 2:37:23 PM
The current hysteria surrounding Poltical Correctness and an attitude of "human rights at all cost" made us the prey of bandits with more rights than any law abiding citizen. Let's be serious and straight for once - get rid of these so-called "immigrants" from any place north of the Limpopo and the percentage of crime will easily come down by 80 - 90%.

LB 1/2/2008 2:40:14 PM
I am so sick of being scared all the time. Everyday you wake up wondering..."Is today the day that crime wrecks my life, is it my turn? It's a basic human right to feel safe. Criminals who take lives do not deserve to live.

HEN 1/2/2008 2:40:44 PM
A person kills ,rape or steal he go to jail...easy way out. A person races to twice the allowable speed on a open road he get a fine...easy way out. Why do they do these things....because they can and want to. Jails do not scare criminals and on top of it we loyal hardworking taxpayers has to foot the bill for his safe keeping....Bullshç' a person killing or raping a 3 year old or just kill or hijack need no mercy by jailing them..Get rid of them for good.

Chris 1/2/2008 2:44:51 PM
You're SPOT ON!!

Vernon Wolf 1/2/2008 2:48:15 PM
and I'll say it again... "fight fire with fire" The crime situation in this country have gotten to the point where the only resolve will be violence. I will not hesitate to use deadly force to protect my life or the life of anybody in need. People in this country seem to have lost their backbone.

Joke Time 1/2/2008 3:03:35 PM
Why should people not have the freedom to take R18 000 shopping if they wish to do so? What are the impoverished of SA and Africa doing to uplift themselves (apart from asking the US for a handout). It is a culture of entitlement by any means that got us in this mess in the first place.....

David 1/2/2008 3:05:10 PM
According to our dear Minister of Safety and Security, I would be classified as a 'whinger', because I dare to complain about crime in this country. I believe that there are more than just socio-ecomomic reasons for crime in this country. The total disregard for value in life itself is as a result of the government's very attitude to crime in this country (hence they call us whingers). Crime is also political and almost a retribution, hence the police are so uncompassionate to some victims.

David 1/2/2008 3:09:28 PM
Synical you are wrong. People who have 'so much money' actually pay a whole lot of tax, which the government should use to uplift the poor instead of buying silly submarines. We are not at war with other countries. Our situation is actually worse than a war. I am sure more people die from crime in S.A. on a daily than in war torn Iraq.

GP 1/2/2008 3:13:20 PM
Why would the SA govt stop crime, which strongly contributes to the SA economy? Take a look at the security industry in general... house, cars, etc... Who are the beneficiaries of crime? The SA govt has NO intention tackling crime, we have a weak police force, who only know how to chase down a doughnut effectively. Remember this ppl, the fish rots from the head. My opinion: 1 criminal, 1 bullet.
