Pietermaritzburg - Traffic officers had to close off the northbound N3 freeway outside Pietermaritzburg on Sunday to catch two motorcyclists who were allegedly tearing up the national road at speeds of more than 230 km/h.
Traffic department spokesperson Rajen Chinaboo told Sapa the bikers allegedly went through a speed trap at Cato Ridge between Durban and Pietermaritzburg at 235km/h.
When traffic officials ordered them to stop, they failed to do so and a high speed car chase ensued.
The department closed off the entire north-bound N3 and the men were eventually caught and arrested, Chinaboo said.
One of the motorcycles was found to be unlicensed.
The men will appear in the Camperdown magistrates court on Monday on charges of speeding and failing to stop when directed to do so.
The N3 is one of South Africa's busiest national roads.
