Port Elizabeth - He told the doctor he wanted to go to God, closed his eyes and died.
So said a deeply upset Annelie Dirker on Monday as she repeated the last words of her eldest son, Jean-Pierre, 20, after he had been involved in a horrific crash on Saturday.
JP, as he was known, was travelling from Bloemfontein to Port Elizabeth on Saturday morning, a day after finishing his second year in optometry at Free State University.
He called his father, Arno, at about 10:20 to say he had just filled up the car in Cradock and would leave shortly.
About 12 km before Cookhouse he was in a head-on collision with another car.
Riana Kruger from Pretoria, the driver of that car, died on the scene.
Her husband, Abraham Kruger, was discharged from the Somerset East Hospital on Monday.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
"JP was still alive and was admitted to the same hospital, Dirker said on Monday.
She added that they immediately jumped into their car to get to JP in hospital.
"En route we got the news that the hospital had called to say my child had died."
The last time the family were together was three weeks ago when JP was home before his year-end exam.
