Metro cops fight CCMA

Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is to appeal a ruling of the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) that it owes several senior officials more than a R1m in transport allowances, a spokesperson said.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the department had 14 days to lodge an appeal with the Labour Court against the CCMA's decision.
He also denied news reports that the sheriff of the court had arrived at the metro police offices to attach assets. The sheriff, Minnaar said, was only serving documents, and there could be no attachments until the appeal had been heard.
The CCMA hearing followed a dispute over transport allowance arrears amounting to about R1.3m for the about 22 chief superintendents working for the city police.
