Uitenhage - Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing car parts worth R500 000 from the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage on Friday, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
Captain Gavin Baker said police received a tip-off last week about people who were intending to steal vehicle parts from the Volkswagen plant. Since the tip-off they monitored the Volkswagen property daily.
At about 23:00 on Friday, two men arrived at the Volkswagen manufacturing plant and broke into the gate.
They proceeded to where the vehicle parts were kept, broke open one of the containers and took parts valued at R500 000.
The guards on the property saw a suspicious vehicle and alerted police.
The guards pursued the thieves as they left.
In the pursuit, the driver of the guards' vehicle lost control and crashed into a lamp post.
One guard sustained injuries to his head and the other one had a broken leg. They were taken to Cuyler hospital for treatment.
Police arrived on the scene and arrested the two robbers, who are expected to appear in court soon.
Baker said police were expecting to make more arrests because they were following other leads.
