Pretoria - A million Tutsis where killed within three months during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

"They were also described as cockroaches. If the ANC leadership describes us as cockroaches, then we must understand they are saying to members these people must be destroyed," said Mosiuoa Lekota, chairperson of the Congress of the People (Cope) at the launch of the new party's logo on Saturday.

He said the ANC's description of political opponents as "dogs, poisonous snakes and cockroaches" was hate speak, which reminded one of the sort of statements made before the Rwandan genocide.

Meetings disrupted

At least four meetings of the new party were disrupted last week, two of them in the Free State.

The latest incident happened in Thokoza on the East Rand on Sunday, when supporters wanted to gather in a school hall but were forced to leave for an open field after ANC members stopped them from coming in.

According to Smuts Ngonyama, who recently resigned from the ANC and joined Cope, the governing body of the school wouldn't allow about 200 Cope members to gather in the hall.

Members of the governing body are all ANC supporters.

Cope meetings were also disrupted at Hennenman and Heidedal in Bloemfontein and in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal.

ANC members in Heidedal apparently blocked the entrance to the property where the meeting would be held and blew car horns in the area to disrupt proceedings.

In Phomolong (Hennenman), ANC members occupied the hall where the meeting was to be held. The meeting was disrupted for hours. Police were called in and the tense situation was finally resolved after Mathabo Leeto, executive mayor of Matjhabeng, arrived to negotiate with the ANC supporters.

Lekota said these activities showed that the ANC's claims that it promoted political tolerance were nonsense.

Disruptions 'a favour'

Meanwhile, ANC leader Jacob Zuma told a crowd of 35 000 people in KaMhluswa near Malelane in Mpumalanga, that ANC members should not do Cope the favour of disrupting their meetings. "My view is when we (the ANC) go to their meetings to disrupt them, we increase their popularity."

He said those meetings then made the news, whereas it may normally not have made the news. He emphasised that it was not acceptable for ANC members to disrupt other meetings.

Zuma also said it hurt when the Cope wanted to use names from the ANC's history for their own purposes. Congress of the People referred to a gathering of different movements in 1955, which was organised by the ANC.

Multi-racial party

Mluleki George, treasurer of Cope, said during a recent visit to the North West that he had seen even white farmers joining the party. In the Free State 64 000 people joined the new party and in the Eastern Cape, apparently more than 60 000 joined.

"We aim to be the first truly multi-racial party in which all South Africans are involved," he said.

Why do the majority of South Africans not see that the writing is on the wall. The ANC is a corrupt and leaderless party with Thugs and criminals calling the shots. It is time we call a spade a spade and realise that the age of the Rainbow Nation and Madiba is over.We are now living in Africa with true African politicians(Selfish, greedy and no respect for their fellow man.I fear for a country where a person like Malema is given a voice, where a song( bring me my machine gun is accepted at rallies.

Ngwato Lekgoro 11/17/2008 9:54:27 AM
Lekota once called others monkeys. Smuts Ngonyama said he did not join struggle to be poor. None of them can be trusted.

Mike 11/17/2008 9:54:46 AM
Takes me back to the old days when National Party thugs went around disrupting opposition meetings. It makes you wonder why the ANC is so scared of the new party.

steve 11/17/2008 10:00:33 AM
Try Destroy what you cannot control.

Richard Hipkin 11/17/2008 10:06:11 AM
I say if a political party continiously distrupts opposition they should be suspended from that election, they will not be part of that election but can particpate in the following election should they learn to behave them selves in a democratic manner. I have lost all respect for the ANC, I cannot find it in me to see anymore good in that party, they are disappointing at their intolerance and thug like mentality.

Lucy, CT 11/17/2008 10:06:31 AM
The ANC of respectable men and women is gone. All that's left is a party hijacked by warlords and an ANCYL leader that incites young people to be irresponsible, why not! they have "a licence to make mistakes". On the other hand the main leader sings the AK47 song inciting members to solve their problems by killing. No wonder members are disrupting meetings all over cos they know nothing will be done to them. SOUTH AFRICA, LET'S COME TOGETHER, SAVE OUR LAND FROM WARLORDS, YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE!

G. 11/17/2008 10:07:53 AM
Your so called ANC people should wake up and do your campaign if you still want to win elections and leave our people alone at rally's, the likes of Malema, Zuma, Ndzimandi and The Zwelinzima, Sixwale and Phosa's are opportunist who will stop at nothing to do corruption. COPE is the way for all South African who want the future for this country to be bright and the mafia's that highjacked ANC are losers who'll do anything to get power from those who are still on the dark, all who support this.

Nombulelo 11/17/2008 10:09:45 AM
I dont like their behaviour (ANC), IT IS NOT GOOD FOR OUR LOVELY COUNTRY

G... 11/17/2008 10:10:50 AM
I see the light from COPE and all who support ANC are still in the dark, can't you guys see that your leaders are nothing but the bunch of illiterate who contradicts one another everytime they are given an opportunity to speak in public,

Lehana Khawe 11/17/2008 10:16:32 AM
Africans must be worried about the new political party in SA.We must ask them who are u working for? This theory about democracy, having many parties and opposition to former liberation movements is only happening in Africa. The enemy of Africa has once more found its agents in the form of Lekota'enemies donkey'

wazzup 11/17/2008 10:17:03 AM
We are fortunate to have the intensive media coverage that we do in SA. So atrocities like ANC thugs deliberately disrupting COPE meetings immediately get widespread attention. This then conveys to the masses that the ANC is not to be trusted any more. It will take time, but gradually the people will realise that the ANC no longer represents the will of the people, but their own selfish interests. So I say, keep up your dishonourable actions,ANC, they will cause your downfall sooner.

jackey 11/17/2008 10:20:12 AM
If the current ANCircus leadership arent afraid or threated by COPE why the sabotage then..I believe in what COPE stands for and this current ANCircus is heading the way of ZANU-PF..Its arrogant (corrupt & uneducated) leaders all the preach is struggle this , struggle that, make COPE members run, COPE are dogs...etc..etc !!And the preach this to the poorest of the poor and its sad that they will believe anything that the ANC tell them ,but in reality they still poor & will remain poor.COPE X

TomTom 11/17/2008 10:21:54 AM
Zuma your people don't wan't 2 listen 2 you!!!

Lifa 11/17/2008 10:22:52 AM
ANC members are worst than taxi drivers.

Michael Bowery 11/17/2008 10:25:52 AM
It's Africa. A Continent that seldom if ever resolves disagreements with negotiation and compromise. It always ends in violence. From `Taxi wars' Ethnicity and rival political parties the end is always savage and bloody!

sakhomba 11/17/2008 10:27:26 AM
I have grown to mistrust any thing containing the words congress. They are all the same, greedy, heartless and manipulative. Jesus Christ (JC) is probably near since zuma (JZ) once suggested they will rule till then. Red socks Shilowa, when he resigned he stated on national television without blinking that he knows nothing of a new party, three days later he was a member. They are all choking on their greed lets go to the polls SA and show them the power of the people.

Thao 11/17/2008 10:28:27 AM
The disruption seed was sowed in Polokwane and watered over time by statement from leadership, like the Malema's. It is quite sad to read that leaders like Mchunu's are not quite condeming such behaviours but instead come with excuses of shifting the blame. Leaders must begin to understand that they need to start leading by example and not give degrading conduct room for growth. Democracy is what we all fought for.

Brad 11/17/2008 10:29:25 AM
History has a habit of repeating itself and one only needs to look across our border to realize that South Africa will be Zimababwe in 10 years time under ANC lawless thug rule

Crazy Boy 11/17/2008 10:30:40 AM
Its amazing sometines to realise that the same people who called other people monkeys in the past are feeling like this when this plate turns on them.

CHIPS 11/17/2008 10:34:35 AM
At last South Africa has the political organisation that has integrety,of people who hates corruption, and uphold the rule of law.

Raboteng 11/17/2008 10:35:37 AM
Comrades! Things like disrupting meetings of opposition parties won't give us anything, but only make us loose respect and confidence in the majority of South African. There is nothing to fear Comrades we still going to win the following elections but let stop doing irresponsible things like that. Amandla awethu Comrades!!! Lets not do them Favor or Famous by doing those stupid acts. There is nothing to Fear here!!!

Thabo 11/17/2008 10:39:29 AM
This morning I was transported from a car service centre to work by a driver who insisted that voting is a waste of time. I tried my best to convince him that he should vote. Lucy is right; your vote is your voice. Our constitution protects our participatory democracy but it becomes meaningless in the face of absolute power. If you are disillusioned with the ANC show this by voting for any other party. If you do not vote you forfeit a right that people have died for.

Raboteng 11/17/2008 10:43:28 AM

by anc supporters. Not only do we witness the intransigent narrow-mindedness of it's sheep but so does the rest of the world. This is the ugly bitter face of SA.Everytime I see Jesse Duartes and others bitter faces on tv I want puke on my springbok jersey!

SmF 11/17/2008 10:47:25 AM
that the evil that is the ANC is brought to its knees before the darkness that has enveloped Zim through Moogabie and his minions decends on us. We can also acheive this by voting. This will be the first time i will ever be voting for a party other than ACDP. We all need to put our diffrences aside and Vote COPE as if our lives depend on it because they do!.

Komane Mashabela Phillip 11/17/2008 10:50:47 AM
IT IS IN MY OPINION THAT THE ANC IS POPULARIZING COPE BY DISRUPTING AND MAKING UNCALLFOR COMMENTS DAY IN AND DAY OUT. CALLING PEOPLE NAMES DOES NOT MAKE ANY GOOD TO THE MOVEMENT, THE LATTER IS A THREAD TO US WHEN TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THAT HOLOMISA LEFT AND THERE WAS NO SUCH THINGS LIKE TODAY WHERE PROMINENT EX-LEADERS OF THE ORGANISATION RESIGNED FROM THE ORGANIZATION. HOLOMISA HAS MADE A MARK AND I THINK THEY TOO WILL MAKE A MARK, LET'S CONCENTRADE ON THE CHALLANGES AHEAD OF US.

BraTabs 11/17/2008 10:52:49 AM
ANC's conduct vindicates COPE's claims that ANC has deviated from Freedom Charter Principles. ANC is scared of something & desperate hence resorting to hurling insults & disruprting meetings and in the long run will hurt ANC make COPE more popular.

Tok 11/17/2008 10:59:43 AM
It is about time South Africans see COPE and ANC is the same animal painted with a different brush. The other politico's should follow the example of Helen Zille, foster a brain and grow some back-bone.

Aki 11/17/2008 11:01:38 AM
"The enemy of Africa has once more found its agents in the form of Lekota'enemies donkey" - Those words sounds like coming from Bob and his Zanu-PF (the agent being MDC). Is South Africa becoming another Zimbambwe?

Patrick 11/17/2008 11:06:13 AM
Amaaandla!!!!Amaaaandla!!!Awethuuu..Comrades let us not be treatened by these fake party COPES look i'm goin to vote 4 the ANC 4 the 1st time in my life then we loose them we gain more than we lost, then lets the true comrades not disrupt their meetings cause we are goin to win this coming election. Amaaandla!!!!!!

Stella 11/17/2008 11:09:52 AM
I would like to join COPE, I love it so much. Please tell me where to go and join. I want to be a card carrying member of COPE? Where are your offices in Johannesburg? Viva COPE!!!

Max 11/17/2008 11:10:11 AM
It is funny how desperation can show itself from people while pretending to be happy. This is exactly what the ANC is doing. I feel for them because you can't be on power on black minds for more than 90 years and you suddenly have a competitor.

juan 11/17/2008 11:13:30 AM
The goverment must protect the democratic rights of all the people in the country. If any goverment official is corrupt or does not perform that person must be replaced by someone that will look after the rights of the people, let us decide who we want to vote for.

Linda Bwalya 11/17/2008 11:16:23 AM
I take this opportunity to welcome South Africa to the real Africa.Your honey moon is over.Welcome to the African League. Very soon South Africans will start migrating to other African Countries and we will see who the real kwerekwere will be.

Geez 11/17/2008 11:17:53 AM
Ey maan Blade! Blade! Blade!. If the ANC can summon this guy to mind his populist rhetoric on behalf of the ANC then the movement will really save its face to the public and focus more on other damage control startegies. Geez

Tania Janson 11/17/2008 11:18:48 AM
Do you honestly have faith in criminals, people singing about killing fro Zuma and people who believe in eating garlic to get rid of AIDS? What a laugh!

Tania Janson 11/17/2008 11:21:08 AM
Do you honestly believe in criminals, people who sing that they'd kill for Zuma and people who believe that garlic will rid you of AIDS? What a laugh! No wonder our country is on the down hill! We will just sit back and laugh at the circus that is currently running this country! My opninion of course .

juan 11/17/2008 11:21:53 AM
I urge you to vote for any opposition so we can all have our say in goverment. stop the two thirds majority

Anon 11/17/2008 11:22:09 AM
Is it legal to disrupt a planned party meeting, what does our Contitution say? ANC as the ruling party should look at this and inform the grassroots of the party. It is their responsibility to communicate this to the ANC members and leaders. RSA citizens want to see maturity from the ANC and they should not throw away votes due to ill dicispline if not checked would reflect that the ANC NEC condone this poor behaviour that does not reflect democracy. I am trying to choose a party!

CTheB 11/17/2008 11:22:40 AM
The numerous statements that the ANC is not worried about the new party were in fact a statement of the opposite. If they'd said it once and left it at that people would know they're not really worried, but to say it numerous times sounds like they're desperately trying to convince people. To disrupt their meetings also says they're worried enough that they can't let them get on with setting up the party.

Elod 11/17/2008 11:30:48 AM
Will vote for them, but if they want to be first true multi-racial party need to see 50/50 male/female and also 25percent black, 25 white, 25 coloured and 25 asian at top of list - no more demograpichal representation ! - all should have an equal say - even minorities! That is the main problem in ANC - no moderate reasoning from others that make up minorities in SA. Remember Obama - all minorities supported him to the hilt as well as approx 50percent of the majority.

Zakhe xaba 11/17/2008 11:30:55 AM
who ever that collects these political new must not take COPE side.We can see that he hates ANC but we Love ANC cause it is still reasonable than these COPE leaders who failed to do the right thing for years when they were still in ANC,I don't see them as new people they still going to fail.so Mr editor just do your job properly.

Lucy, CT 11/17/2008 11:35:10 AM
The same Lord Jesus Christ that the ANC leader claimed that "the party will rule till He comes back" is no Lord to be played with, The Lord Resists the Proud and he is resisting the ANC, this is why the members' ears are so shut that they cannot hear their leader. This is the end of the ANC.

African 11/17/2008 11:37:21 AM
The best way in life is to resolve any discomfort is in the family. You were ANC/family and now you start your party, tell me are you doing it for people or or your selfish interests? What's in your heart for south africans? This is the time to stand and one soul and build SA, not to pull it down. Ask yourself when you were in government, did you always do the right things for the people? if no, then stop with COPE. ANC is a respectable party with support everywhere in the world. Think again!!!!

Fred 11/17/2008 11:39:12 AM
Why can't the world wake up and realize that Africa is rapidly disappearing down the toilet!Once the thugs who rule South Africa and the rest of Africa have stuffed up the economy and infrastructure, the people will end up doing the other thing Africans are famous for:BEGGING !

Jannie 11/17/2008 11:41:30 AM
Huge mistrust can be seen from all who commented. Mistrust and intolerance is endemic to South Africa. Can we as the Rainbow Nation not for a change be more mature in our approach, show patience and let democracy take it's normal course. Come on people, what have we bled for?

frank 11/17/2008 11:42:02 AM
This new party will change nothing , they never complained or changed anything while in the ANC ,change the name the game's the same . THe only party who has a hope of creating change in sa is the DP though not perfect it is the best of a sorry bunc

PONTSHO MAENETJA 11/17/2008 11:43:36 AM
To my fellow ANC COMRADES. CADRES WE MUST BE VERY PROUD TO SEE THE SHIKOTA TRYING TO THROW OUR MOVEMENTS OUT, MBHAZIMA CAN JUST HEAR NOISES FROM THE SHACK AND LEKOTA IS OVERLOADED WITH A BIG BAG OF STONES WITH NO ADDRESS. SAME LIKE U GO TO A SANGOMA WHO WILL TELL YOU OF NEIGHBOURS BEWITCHING YOU. WHAT IS COPE? CALL FOR PEOPLE TO EPILEPSY. WE WANT OUR PEOPLE IN GOOD HEALTH CONDITION.

Tshepo 11/17/2008 11:46:13 AM
First off, all current ANC leaders are embarassing the nation everyday they get a chance. COPE, an emerging, clear political organisation is a challenge that the ANC has failed dismally to manage. First, it was war of words from all ANC leaders including Angie whom i mistakenly respected. Jacob Zuma should have done better than calling people snakes and is becoming weak everyday. Malema, has obsessive-compulsive behaviour and needs psychological attention.

kamawa 11/17/2008 11:47:12 AM
I see finally the Shikota crew know the meaning of hate speech, funny how one forgets.they used it alot in the past now its wrong. To all sane ANC members let us nt do Shikota a favour by publicizing thier meeting. Please stop the disruptions. We will meet at the polls.

Red5 11/17/2008 11:49:12 AM
There can be no democracy if there is no freedom of association. Every person should be able to support any political party without fear. Why would the ANC (or their supporters) feel the need to intimidate or force people to support its views and vote for them? Any informed person should no that it is not worth voting for the ANC.

Tshepo 11/17/2008 11:52:20 AM
I'm still waiting to see or hear anything that makes sense spoken by Jacob Zuma. i'm still wondering why people are so caught off-guard by this Man despite his criminal allegations and moral shortcomings. others preach to kill and crush for him. others want political solution to his legal challenges. WHY? This Man is being imposed on us with all means existing on earth.
