Zuma 'persecuted like Christ'

2008-11-30 22:46

Henry Cloete

Bloemfontein - African National Congress president Jacob Zuma is being subjected to the same persecution as Christ, according to Ace Magashule, the ANC's Free State chairperson.

"Jesus was persecuted. He was called names and betrayed. It's the same kind of suffering Mr Zuma has had to bear recently, but he's still standing strong. He's not giving up," Magashule told Volksblad on Sunday.

He also explained a similar comparison he made on Friday while addressing a crowd of Zuma supporters, as Zuma was attending the appeal hearing of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The NPA is appealing the judgment made by Judge Chris Nicholson earlier this year in Zuma's corruption case.

It's not the first time that a prominent member of the ANC has drawn a comparison between Zuma or the ANC and the Bible.

'I never said Zuma was Jesus'

In his speech on Friday - which was mostly delivered in Sotho - Magashule said that although Zuma had been subjected to all kinds of persecution, he had never left the ANC.

Magashule said he didn't believe anyone would be uncomfortable with the parallels he was drawing between Zuma and Jesus.

"Why would it make people uncomfortable? I'm a Christian too. There's absolutely nothing wrong with comparisons of this nature.

"I never said Zuma was Jesus. He can't be Jesus. I merely compared the kind of persecution that had to be endured."

Magashule said he had also used the comparison to refer to people who had left the ANC.

"Jesus had up to 70 disciples, but in the end only 12 remained.

"People are slandering Zuma. What do they want from him? He has long ago apologised and asked for forgiveness for what he has done wrong."

Magashule was referring, among other things, to the fact that Zuma had publicly apologised - after being found not guilty on a rape charge - to having had unprotected sex.

Moral high ground

Prof André Duvenhage, a political scientist at North West University, said statements of this kind were aimed at placing Zuma on a moral high ground by linking him to a figure who had a high moral status.

"By doing this, his close supporters want to legitimise his struggle. It's a skewed comparison. Jesus was never a political figure.

"It has also been said the ANC will govern until Jesus returns. But in my opinion Zuma still has quite a few challenges to face and it's not a foregone conclusion at all that Zuma will become president in 2009."

Prof Hermie van Zyl, lecturer in New Testament at Free State University, said the statement that Jesus had 70 disciples that were reduced to 12 is not correct.

"In the Gospel according to Luke it says that Jesus had a wider circle of followers, but nowhere is it said that they were reduced to 12.

"The term 'disciple' is in fact reserved for the 12 that were with him all the time.

"Even those 12 deserted him on the Night of Betrayal, so in the end even they weren't there anymore," Van Zyl said.

Dear MR Zuma / ANC STOP comparing yourself to a perfect man or anything He did! Trust me, JZ is NOTHING lik Jesus Christ! This is a fair warning: try something more credible...

LOST 12/1/2008 7:39:45 AM
The ANC has finally lost the plot!

Love Africa 12/1/2008 7:42:16 AM
I guess the problem is Zuma's morals aren't very moral! No high ground for immoral!

anon 12/1/2008 7:46:35 AM
Unbelievable. How can you actually compare his actions with Christ. That is complete and utter Blasphemy. Its a disgrace!!!!

Lee 12/1/2008 7:52:29 AM
Can you call it that? Supposedly according to the stories I have read, when we was persecuted, he turned the other cheek, not turned at spat venom at all and sundry. And if he was some sort of messiah as you claim him to be, bring on the Mauritian diaries and let him open himself to all. Willing, I thought not!!!

Steven 12/1/2008 7:53:16 AM
How can someone compare Zuma to Jesus. Jesus is almighty, he healed people, spoke the truth and died for our sins. What has Zuma done so far??? Lies and betrayal. Sounds more like the devil...

KiefieChief 12/1/2008 7:53:37 AM
To compare Jesus to Zuma is nothing short of blasphemy. Shocking! How low will you go...

spaceman 12/1/2008 7:56:22 AM
"He was called names and betrayed." Yes, because when you think of all that Jesus went through, the thing that stands out as the most painful is that he was called names and betrayed. Oh wait thats not Jesus, thats pre-school.

Ben 12/1/2008 7:56:35 AM
How on earth can you bring the two together. Jesus never sin but us humans live in sin and we live in a world where we determain our own destiny. Zuma is a political figure nothing more nothing less. Upset Christian

Anon 12/1/2008 7:57:30 AM
This is the most insulting comment made thus far by the ANC! Jesus healed, did not us people like Shabir to do any dirty work and definately took good control and disciples and followers. He spoke in love and respected woman. He was honest and all inclusive. You are sick and ignorant to make this comment. You have now lost my vote for sure!

For Petes sake 12/1/2008 7:58:46 AM
Why didn't they compare Zuma to Mohammad? I feel that they are disrespecting Christianity. They would dare compare Zuma to Mohammad for having so many wives. Just stop it!!!

Rainbow Nation 12/1/2008 8:00:53 AM
Oh dear, there he goes again. Zuma & his "comrades" are just begging for a bolt of lightning aren't they! They pretend to know the Bible, just as they pretend to know politics - and its showing... Do they not realize that they are pushing people further away, in stead of pulling them closer? The saying: "They are their own worst enemy" really does seem very fitting!

The people that praised Jesus, were the same people that later crucified him (disciples and followers excluded). Do not draw parallels with our HUMBLE Lord, as you cannot endure what he had to.

Eugene Hope 12/1/2008 8:03:53 AM
Ace Magashule is just another misguided politician. Jesus never slept with his friends daughter. Zuma not guily of rape? Maybe.... innocent? Never. Although Jesus kept company with morally questionable people like Schabir Schaik, it was always to bring repentence and healing - not for self enrichment. Comparing Zuma to Jesus is an insult of the highest degree.

Leon 12/1/2008 8:04:14 AM
How dare you liken Zuma to Christ. He is nothing like Him. Christ was the perfect sinless Son of God. He had no sin and took upon Himself the sin of sinful men. That is not the case with Zuma even if he was not guilty of the corruption charges against him. It is for this reason that Zuma will not have the blessing of God should he rule this country and no matter what the case is, guilty or not, God will deal with him as he deserves, and with such that make comments like this and those who publishes things like this. Christ is no ordinary man to be likened to a sinful and disrespectful person as yourselves. Having religious freedom in this country does not give you the right to disrespect God and even if you are not be persecuted for such comments in this country or life, there will come a time that you will receive due punishment for your actions and that punishment will be far worst that what any jury of this world could impose on you.

Jesus did not have his hand in the cookie jar... ZUMA did! Hopefully a court will proves this or not - either way, Zuma should have his day in court. To even talk about Jesus' suffering and Zuma in any context is just unimaginable.

Sylvester Siboto 12/1/2008 8:10:52 AM
It is laughable for anyone to liken Zuma to Christ. I feel so sorry for Magashule and Zuma himself. Comparing Zuma to Christ is, indeed, the blasphemy of the highest kind. Now that they cannot engage in pure politics, they go for utter blasphemy - shame on you! They would probably have to take a stronger shower - to plead for mercy from the Lord God Almighty.

Nkosinathi 12/1/2008 8:13:03 AM
People can play all their political games the best way they can but they must not use the Lord Jesus' name in vain.It has become a common thing for ANC leaders to equate Zuma to Jesus and i want to say to you,you are playing with fire.

Woman of God 12/1/2008 8:13:09 AM
As an ANC member, I'm honestly disgusted that our party has gone as far as comparing Zuma to Jesus.Zuma didn't die for any of us on the cross and rise from the dead,Jesus did,and no human being will even amount to that.A normal man of God's suppose to guide and be a living example of God's powers and abilities, not be compared to them.Zuma, teach your fellow cde's about Jesus, afterall, you were ordained a reverent or something of the sort. ANC you're honestly stooping too low in your battle :-(.

Jesus wasn't a lying thieving rapist. Give zuma what he deserves, the electric chair, bring back the death penalty! It is clear that the ANC has degenerated into a nothing more than a big pile of sh1t, grasping at any pathetic attempt to grab votes, at any cost, no matter how absurd. Its sad really. I would say "there goes the ANC's credibility" but they have lost that a long time back already.

Derick 12/1/2008 8:15:03 AM
Jesus did things for the people and to save them. He did nothing for personal gain. No corner stones for you. The only plate to remember you by will the the one hanging around your neck before entering prison. Go well.

Village Idiot 12/1/2008 8:16:23 AM
What a guy. So he will be hanging from a cross by the end of all this political BS. Wonder if he was able to resist the temptation in the desert? So is this guy a deciple? Zuma's biography: The Newest Testament. Osama 1:4 Thy world shalt think youre an arse!

JT 12/1/2008 8:16:42 AM
The last party who tried to mix politics and religion was the Nationalist Party, and we know how things ended for them. Mr. Zuma is looking more and more like PW Botha by the day. Anyway, I think the Archbishop will tear a strip off him for that type of nonsense.

Pogiso 12/1/2008 8:18:35 AM
This is a clear indication of how our society has lost hope to its leaders, how do you compare Zuma with Christ...Zuma didn't suffer for me, and will never die for me to be free. This is a disgrace and Ace is undermining all church effort to uplift the morals of society. Married man sleeping with a woman aged to be his daughter. Please Mr Ace. I think you owe us an apology! What you (Mr Ace) should do is pray for Mr Zuma.

Conscience 12/1/2008 8:25:05 AM
I think it is better to compare him with Satan. By what he says and does, he definately is associating himself with the Devil and not Jesus. He is devious, misleads the people and tell them what they want to hear. He even enjoys singing and as I recall, Lucifer was the "angel of music and light". He woo's people with sweet innocent whispers and that is all I see JZ doing. So Mr JZ - you are nothing near our beloved Christ and I can't wait to hear your verdict on Judgement Day! Don't forget that!!

zah 12/1/2008 8:29:42 AM
i think this stories about jz should come to die end now!!!!coz nobody is perfect, zuma is living on earth so he is living lyf like all other people he never healed anyone like jesus did,so how cum he is compared to JESUS?

ANC = Association of the Anti-Christ 12/1/2008 8:29:52 AM
Not that we don't make mistakes but Christ had morals, never had extramarital affairs and children born out of wedlock. I don't judge but there is no relationship between Christ and Zuma, maybe Zuma is an anti-christ (SATAN in a white collar", such comparison is ABSURD, PROFANE, and well ZUMARISH. Ace Magashule you are a dead snake, ass, cockroach, dog, lizard, wizard, you name it...

Honky Tonk Man 12/1/2008 8:30:11 AM
Lets see: Jesus travelled on foot and mingled with the people. Zuma travels in a BMW X5 and steals from the people. Jesus was morally incorrupt, Zuma had unprotected sex with an HIV woman and solicited bribes. etc, etc, etc. Yes, I can see the comparissons.

Clinton 12/1/2008 8:30:41 AM
Ace or who ever u name is stop talking bull shit ......finish and klaar Zuma is a rapist and Christ was and will always be Unique , ur comparison is disgusting to say the least or are u looking for promotion from so called "Mr Zuma" !!!!!

werner 12/1/2008 8:32:56 AM
This is a sick compasrison!

Steve 12/1/2008 8:35:09 AM
We all know The ANC is in dire need for a miracle, but to utter things like they will rule till Jesus come, Shikota the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem and now the comparison of JZ to JC is absurd. ANC if you want a miracle I suggest you go down on your knees and pray for forgiveness for all the injustice you have caused this country!! I hope and pray that ALL RSA Christians won't support you in the upcoming elections.

Jimmy 12/1/2008 8:37:22 AM
The pain that Jesus Christ went through is incomparable to anyone else's pain and he did it for a much more noble cause than any other. I suggest you go watch a movie called the Passion of Christ before you comment like that again. Not to mention that it is sinful to make such comparisons especially for one's own political gain.

Christian 12/1/2008 8:38:39 AM
Who is this guy to compare zuma to Jesus. Another goverment official in this great country of ours!

Julius 12/1/2008 8:39:15 AM
???????

David 12/1/2008 8:39:27 AM
John Lennon once said that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ and a short while later the Beatles broke up and then John Lennon was murdered! So much for comparing oneself to Jesus.

Gerhard 12/1/2008 8:41:14 AM
Mr Magashule, if you want to make such an unaccetable comparison, you need to look at the full story. The same people that praised Him when he rode into Jerusalem on the donkey, were the ones that crucified him later. We wonder who will still be by JZ's side when the lashes start to fall? Please stop belitteling our Lord by these analogies. It would be much more appropriate to use some fictional character like king kong or superman.... You cannot blasthemise them. Thank you, Gerhard.

Conscience 12/1/2008 8:46:03 AM
Then you can start comparing him to Christ. Jesus spoke against violence and hatred: JC1-JZ0. Jesus had morals: JC2-JZ0. Jesus kept his followers in order: JC3-JZ0. Jesus was honest and told the Truth: JC4-JZ0. Jesus loved and healed ALL: JC5 -JZ0. Jesus willingly went to his hearing (court): JC6-JZ0. Jesus accepted his unfair judgement and punishment: JC7-JZ0!! Please slither back into your hole JZ.

Derick again 12/1/2008 8:46:44 AM
Ace, you are most probably waiting for the ?cloth? to be torn and to be shared ? I see no benefits for you where this is going.

Francois 12/1/2008 8:50:59 AM
How can ANYONE with even halve a brain vote for them?...Are there really people that still believe that the ANC is fit to govern our country? This insult to Christ must be the last straw for many.

Phumzile 12/1/2008 8:52:17 AM
It is sad for the ANC you are trying so hard to prove that Mr Zuma is a saint. The only way to close this is to allow him to go to court stop fighting so hard to keep him away from court.

Jason 12/1/2008 8:52:57 AM
Let him be. Lets also crucify him them and see if he rises again. I'll bring the nails.

Renee 12/1/2008 8:55:30 AM
The bigger picture of all this stupidity by the ANC is that they are pulling out ALL the stops in an attempt to catch the pieces of the crumbling cookie. They really don't need anybody else to embarass them, they do so well on their own. I am a card carrying member of the ANC, but have never been so embarrassed - i will be cutting up my membership card into a thousand little piecs and flushing it down the toilet, which is where the ANC is going.

LizaD 12/1/2008 8:56:37 AM
Maybe we should crusify Zuma on a cross. Lets see if he can resurect himself. The man is an embarrassment

How can you compare a man who clearly has no morals and is not able to perform any miracles to Christ! I don't think the ANC can go any lower. Can't believe people even vote for them, they are just a bunch of bullies!

Your words create your world! 12/1/2008 9:02:06 AM
The test for a prophet is to see if his words come true, so let's see if history repeats itself with JZ. Is this deep down what even his "followers" wish for? Following through on this persecution line - the people wanted to make JC their leader, and in the end He was utterly rejected and forsaken by his own people and all his followers and then killed without holding office (here on earth).

Zel 12/1/2008 9:03:24 AM
Great! Now Zuma has experienced the type of persecution Christ had? How can you compare if you have no first hand knowledge of someone else's experiences? Next thing we know, he'll be paying for our sins - hanging from the Cross...

Oh dear oh dear 12/1/2008 9:04:33 AM
We are further amazed at the ANC's determination to show that although they are part communist, part socialist, part evil and no good.... they are now sitting even closer to heaven. Now, what was it that Jesus did when his house was being used for things other than praising the Lord? Oh yes, he cast them out! Mr Zuma, until you have the courage and integrity to go to court to prove your innocence and any moral standing you have - you are no better than another criminal waiting trial.

Jason 12/1/2008 9:05:48 AM
In that they both have ignorant followers who revere an ideal that is far from the truth.

renier226 12/1/2008 9:05:58 AM
don't you ever again compare jacob zuma with Jesus Christ. Ace if you have any dignity and morale fibre in you, you should ask forgiveness to God and the public for these wild statements.

Sam 12/1/2008 9:10:14 AM
The person who wrote this article needs to go and read the bible. The comments have already been expressed that these statements are outrageous and grossly inaccurate. You cannot compare Zuma to someone who was without sin, Jesus suffered for all the sins that were ever committed and that would be committed?there is no comparison. Also I call on the journalist who wrote this article, to have some respect for their work and bring the facts to light when they write anything (I am not just talking about this article). As a journalist it IS YOUR DUTY to research your topics, and bring nothing but the truth out in your work. There are way too many points in this article to even begin pointing out how inaccurate this article is. You should practise responsible journalism end of story, you are supposed to remain neutral?this is yet another example of someone who doesn?t know a thing about politics or religion but chose to right about them anyway. Is it perhaps just because you had a deadline to meet so you wrote this rubbish!

byron 12/1/2008 9:15:38 AM
this is ridiculous , how can they even state somethign like that ? i dont recall Jesus being tried for corruption or rape , and he would knwo a shower does not help !come on guys, do you not realize that you are making the anc look even more ridiculous with these comments?? it did make me laugh on a monday morning so thanks once again ! hahahahaa

sais it all 12/1/2008 9:15:49 AM
He thinks he is god and he can do anything and get away with everything. Give them enough rope and he will hang himself. COPE is agood thing that started and Zuma wants to feel sorry for himself because he does not know how to handle it. But the fact that he thinks he is god is the most STUPID thing I have ever heard. Rather he focus on something more worth while than himself. Just take a shower and all will be over

RAS 12/1/2008 9:16:36 AM
Jesus or no Jesus, persecution is persecution, and that is what the honourable comrade is going thru right now. What blasphemy, the comparison relates to the persecution and nothing to do with Godliness or being a Saviour or healer for that matter.People need to catch a wake up and stop jus goin along wit da media's brainwash.Politics is dirty always no matter when, where or how or who?...No way in hell can u single out one man for that dirt. I mean where do political parties get their money? DA?

Bro Dude 12/1/2008 9:17:33 AM
Fellow readers, From what I have read so far, everyone who posted a comment on this topic said more or less the exact same thing. But here is something to take from a different angle. Besides the content of this article, there is an underlying message. The ANC is using this as a cheap publicity stunt. They are stirring up conversation everywhere. Publicity is free, whether good or bad, it doesn't matter because the companies name is being used and talked about.

Bro Dude 12/1/2008 9:21:10 AM
Guys don't get upset because some idiot feels he is out of the limelight. Mr. Ventura "ACE" is just looking for his thirty seconds of fame. Let's not get all riled up everytime a bunch of idiots give us a hard time. The universe tends to unfold as it should.

Annatar 12/1/2008 9:21:22 AM
Ok then, before your cronies and bootlickers start comparing your suffering with that of Christ JZ please go nail yourself on a cross after being scourged a few dozen times and get yourself stabbed with a spear. IF they take you down after that then you can start comparing yourself to his suffering. Talk about a God complex!

Lucy, CT 12/1/2008 9:23:12 AM
Zuma and his gang should really stop associating themselves with The Mighty Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, His glory is like fire and anyone that dares to mess with it will face the harsh punishment from the Lord.

EDDIE 12/1/2008 9:23:58 AM
Please, Christ was not a rapist,Christ did not have over 400 cases of fraud against him.If I write a test and they catch me. I cannot ask that my crip notes must not be used against me in a hearing. I think the blind is leading the death here!

Nthatuwa 12/1/2008 9:31:19 AM
Ace doesn't see anything wrong with his comments it doesn't mesn they aren't wrong. Its the same with Zuma not wanting to admit he raped,is corrupt,he's a liar and that he shouldn't be President of this country.Ace,you're some kinda Christian,Priests rape and and steal people's money and one just stabbed another. What sorta Christian are you then?

annatar 12/1/2008 9:32:05 AM
Maybe your idiotic party has done something so disgraceful that it has finally shut you all up! What no excuses? No brainwashed rhetoric? Come on guys what feeble defenses can you now conjure to exonerate your party now?

Zwide 12/1/2008 9:45:55 AM
If you believe that by falsely accusing Zuma of being a rapist you will win the 2009 general election, you are wrong. The fact is the masses are seeing what this comrade is being subjected to and they feel that he is being persecuted. Like Christ. That's right! We will make sure that Zuma becomes the president of this country next year. This little clique of Zuma haters on the net is nothing compared to the following that the ANC commands. So dream on, all of you, we'll see you at the polls.

craven 12/1/2008 9:48:13 AM
jesus.. was he charged for rape? corruption? I think you mean OJ Simpson maybe?

Dumane 12/1/2008 9:50:10 AM
Guys, you are doing exactly whay the politicians want you to do. keep talking about it. If you ignore this thing - the effect of saying it is als gone.

bobby 12/1/2008 9:51:46 AM
Well if Zuma is persecuted like Christ, can he do the Christlike thing and humble himself and submit to the persecution without retaliating?

Francois 12/1/2008 9:51:58 AM
Even the ANC supporters can't defend this one. No blaming on apartheid, no counter revelutionaries, no "leave to europe if you don't agree", not the bad old DA,nothing; Just silence.

johnmac 12/1/2008 10:07:11 AM
Zuma saga is more like the movie "The life of brian"

GT 12/1/2008 10:09:55 AM
He seems so desperate to martyr himself as the last saviour of South Africa... get on with it darn it! All the intellectuals have left the ANC and we are left with uneducated bible toting looneys as replacements.

proudly south african 12/1/2008 10:13:45 AM
Not all South Africans are Christians. Making such statements in a political sphere only increases feelings of exclusion for quite a number of the South African public. Maybe the ANC should keep in mind what the Freedom Charter says about freedom of relious belief when its leader says things like "South Africa is a country of God".

Disgusted 12/1/2008 10:20:34 AM
Seriously, I think Zuma is a freak and a pervert. He can never look at the camera or those that he speaks to in the public, in the eye. He always licking his lips in what looks like a sick way to me. He is just a creep. This commoner( no way close the a leader let alone Jesus) has a bunch of uneducated followers who give up their vote for a piece of Kentucky. Put him in jail as a damn criminal (not a political prisoner) and throw away the key! Don't ever compare him to Jesus!

Annie 12/1/2008 10:22:15 AM
I am stunned that you are even trying Zuma to Christ ! You will make sure he will become the next President. Really ? God does not sleep, and he will not have His Son mocked. Your precious Mr Zuma is a coward and a thief !

JZ is Juts Zuma he aint anything like christ i have absolutly no idea how they can compare a man that sings a song that talks about picking up a gun ? is that not subtly introducing violence to his supports and one day when his supports do pick up guns and do kill then he will stand back and say "wasnt me" if a white politicion had to sing bring me my machine gun then he would be critisized heavily and would probably not be allowed to be in pollitics.

Thehman 12/1/2008 10:25:52 AM
I cannot believe this I follow Christ and I know what He stands for, in the end he stood before His persecutors, He never once applied for leave to appeal? He stood by His faith. The comparrison is disgusting and those that tried to defend it, can you not see what is happening? are you hoping to get a farm when he takes over the country? The only way we will grow is when our leaders can behave like Christ and allow the truth to set them free, not the court of appeals.JZ has cheapened it all.

Something to bear in mind. Did God whore around, and stand charged for rape? Was God ever under investigation for fraud? Well Zuma has these against him. How in hell can you make this comparison. It's time someone put a bullet in his head

Derick van Zyl 12/1/2008 10:37:18 AM
Then there should be no problem when the Crucifiction comes?

Catherine 12/1/2008 10:42:46 AM
What a lot of rubbish. How can you compare Christ to a rapist like Zuma? What a lot of nonsense!!!!

Les Mitchell 12/1/2008 10:50:18 AM
When Zuma is crucified and rises again, then I'll believe this foolishness. Until then, take your machine gun, Zuma, and go to hell.

Aquarius 12/1/2008 10:54:44 AM
Let Zuma show me that he can change water to wine or walk on water, then you can make comparison. In the meantime, don't make ludicrous statements.

Anonie 12/1/2008 11:06:27 AM
to even utter a word Jesus and him in the same sentence is stupid. trying your best to get favours for him using South African's Emotions is stupid and showing lazyness.

Annie 12/1/2008 11:23:45 AM
What a big joke this is! How dare they compare a souless, a person living with no morales or ethics to the on who gave his life so we could live? WHAT A BIG JOKE!! How dare this idiot compare one PERFECT person to a person who raped a women and got off scott free? A fraudster who thinks that he is the eptimone of right? Rather compare the man to the devil as they are probably shaking hands right now and laughing!
