Cope like Jesus's donkey - Zuma

2008-11-19 23:02

Carien du Plessis

Polokwane - Those who have broken away from the ANC are like the donkey on which, according to the Bible, Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

Jacob Zuma, leader of the ANC, used this metaphor on Thursday when he addressed hundreds of Cosatu workers in a packed hall in Polokwane as part of his early election campaign in Limpopo.

He said there was a story in the Bible about a "lucky donkey" on whose back Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

"The people were waiting for the Son of Man who was on the donkey. The donkey did not understand it, and thought the songs of praise were for him," he said.

According to Zuma, the donkey later tried to return to Jerusalem on its own in order to once again experience that moment of glory, but the people chased it away.

In the same way the Congress of the People (Cope) leaders will find they are nothing without the ANC, Zuma said.

Snakeskin

He said the ANC should not only fight for a two-thirds majority, but for a "three-thirds majority".

This will enable the ANC to implement its policies more easily, Zuma said.

Zuma also compared Cope's leaders to snakeskin that remained behind after the winter, while the snake - the ANC - sailed away in its new skin.

The old skin may look like the snake, but it isn't the snake, Zuma said.

However, he added that the ANC should allow the dissidents back in should they change their minds and come knocking at the ANC's door again.

Cope claimed it wanted to protect the Constitution when, in fact, they wanted to amend it in order to change the electoral system, Zuma added.

US electoral system

He said Cope were asking for a direct presidential election, as in the US.

Zuma said Cope leaders were airing their problems in the media. They wanted to involve the whole of South Africa in the process and let the people make decisions about the president.

"The American system is different, because it is based on individualism. One man tells the people he is the best leader and we don't know if we can believe him or not."

Zuma said the Americans gave President George W Bush a mandate to govern them, "and you know what happened in the Middle East".

"Our democracy is based on collectivism. We know this person, what this person can do. It's not about an individual who says he thinks he knows himself and can do everything for you."

What a metaphor! Does the ANC aliken itself to Jesus? The metaphor seems to suggest that COPE will loose its glory while the ANC will retain it as inherent - in the same way as Jesus would retain his greatness with or without the donkey. I do not think so. Jesus was on a Mission to save the world and he died for it so we could all be saved and have a better life. Have we gotten a better life since 1994. Maybe yes for the connected few ...at the expense of the poor majority.

I love it!! Zuma should get more air time. The more he opens his mouth the more he ridicules himself. And likening the ANC to a snake - priceless!!

This is a great metaphor and is not a hate speech contrary to Lekota's view about snake speech. US electoral system will not work in RSA because it is based on individualism. The current system is great as it allows for multiparty and collective democracy. I will vote for ANC in the upcoming election.

This just about says it all. Mr Zuma is a megalomaniac. The ancient Greeks had a term, hubris, for those mortals who thought they were gods. After hubris comes nemesis. I foresee a highveld bolt of lightning taking out Mr Z before he claims a crown of glory. Did Christ call for his machine gun? For any weapon at all? Please will every single South African with a vestige of concern kindly vote for any party likely to form a coalition and get rid of this maniac and his sad associates?

Zuma is not literally referring to ANC as Jesus it is just a metaphor.

This is the sort of chirp one could expect from a person with a Std 2 education.. funny that JZ is starting to exchange chirps with Malema...who's the 'baddest' of them all?? Empty vessels make the most noise!!

Corrucpt leaders means corrupt society, it was good if you practice what you preach, leaders who only got big mouth, how you can be trust to be a leader where as you can't leader yourself as an example. J.Z now is the time to be realistic, tell Malema to sit down coz he is confusing young people in South Africa.....

Zuma, "declare" some statements like "the ANC will rule till Jesus come". Zuma, you DO NOT have a PROPHET VOICE. I sensed I need to say it, because I believe you are in denial. Zuma, you actually taking the Lord name in vain... Let direct you closer to the truth: Jesus raised up COPE, even if they know it or not, because of IDOLS within the ANC. You can not go against the workings of the Lord. The Lord hates abortions, because it's murder etc... Zuma get your house in Line with the Bible!

These analogies are so ridiculously inappropriate that I weep for the poor fools who had to hear them first hand - a little bit like grinning through diarrhea jokes at a dinner party. Dubya Bush had a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease, but it looks like our clown president is far going to supersede his efforts. Let's hope that world leaders enjoy the sangoma bush tales more.

Before Mr Zuma gets to much mileage out of this broken metaphor of his, which I and I'm sure many other Christians find highly offensive, he should consider this. Jesus was crucified the same week as his triumphal entry and by the same people that sang his praises. Yet unlike Jesus, the ANC does not have the ability to raise itself from the dead. So if COPE is the donkey leading the ANC to its downfall then I'm all for it.

What the hell, the majority wants to employ a guy as president who does not have the math skill to know three thirds is 1, or a 100%. The mere fact makes me very anxious but also annoyed. I think the snake metaphor suits the ANC perfectly. Zuma also looks like one. It's funny, in the Bible, the devil is a snake, who wants to mislead Jesus when Jesus was suffering in the desert for 40 days. How ironic, playing the good and bad, almost as though he is just saying what he needs to get the votes.

Joe Soap 11/20/2008 12:41:58 AM
I won't comment on Zuma's continual use of biblical references in the same breath as the letters ANC. The metaphor about the ANC being a snake however is a completely accurate and very fitting metaphor!

For Zuma to think that a democracy whereby the public elect an individual will lead to further flawed leadership from our magnificent public is hilarious. Firstly Zuma feels nice and safe tucked under the ANC bedspread. He knows that a vote for the individual will completely diminish his chances of becoming the next president of South Africa. When will people learn that individuals are only themselves when wholly accountable for their actions. Try holding yourself accountable J-Z!
