ANC stages airborne votes drive

Durban - The ANC made the most of the New Year festivities to drum up support for the upcoming elections by flying a massive flag bearing the picture of the party's president Jacob Zuma over Durban beaches, the Mercury newspaper reported on Friday.
It carried the message "Happy New Year - Remember... Vote ANC".
Holidaymakers watched as the helicopter carrying the flag circled several times before heading further down the coast.
The ANC's provincial deputy secretary Sihle Zikalala said the ANC wanted to remind people to vote.
The banner, he said, was a direct message from Zuma and 2009 was important for the party.
"This year is very important in the country's history as the mandate for the ANC will be renewed.
"We urge people to vote to defend democracy, and defend the development of the country."
