Durban - The DA on Monday gave the KwaZulu-Natal auditor-general documents showing that Msunduzi municipality officials allegedly used more than R1m of taxpayers' money to fund an ANC rally.
"I have today [Monday] met with the auditor-general in KwaZulu-Natal and his deputy, and handed over to his office all the relevant documentation relating to the ANC's apparent misappropriation of R1m worth of public money,” said the Democratic Alliance's Mark Steele.
The party on Sunday produced documents showing that senior officials had allegedly released money under the pretext of funding Inkosi Mlaba Cultural Day in Pietermaritzburg on January 19 but the event never took place.
The venue where the event was to take place was used for a cricket match.
The only event that took place was the African National Congress election rally at Qokololo Stadium which was attended by closed to 50 000 people on January 18.
Steele said the auditor-general, Herman van Zyl, had assured him that his office would investigate the matter and had undertaken to urgently send a team to the Msunduzi municipality.
ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Zweli Mkhize on Sunday promised to examine the DA allegations.
