Malema will never use 'kill' again

2008-07-03 14:13

Johannesburg - ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has assured the SA Human Rights Commission he would never again use the word "kill" in public statements, the commission said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Jody Kollapen said the SAHRC and Malema had met on Thursday to discuss his controversial "kill for Zuma" statement. The utterance was made at a youth rally in the Free State on June 16.

The commission was satisfied with his response and would not follow further legal procedures.

The meeting was facilitated and attended by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

"Mr Malema appreciated the criticism levelled against him for using the word 'kill' and recognises that the word could have been interpreted differently," Kollapen said.

"Mr Malema also explained that it was never his intention to incite violence and undertakes never again to use the word and is committed to democracy and the advancement of human rights.

"As we work towards consolidating our democracy we understand that there will be robust debates. We, however, urge all South Africans to do this within the confines of the Constitution," said Kollapen.

SAHRC head of information Sello Hatang said Malema had met the needs of the commission, which would not seek further legal proceedings against him.

The original ultimatum of the HRC was that Malema should withdraw his remark and apologise for it. Now, he's simply promised never to make it again. Sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me.

Damage done!

Jacques 7/3/2008 2:38:14 PM
I give him a year, but he will use it again, of that you can be sure.

Keifie 7/3/2008 2:42:09 PM
To me the problem is not so much that he said it. I mean he hasn't even apologized as far as I know, he used the phrase repeatedly the following day when asked about it and refused to retract his statement after given the chance to ponder it. To me the problem is that this person who is supposed to be fairly smart, used it in the first place and failed to realize why he shouldn't have said it. That it is this stupidity which qualifies him for a position of authority in this country

Is it possible that Mr malema meant to say that they were willing to die for Zuma as opposed to kill for him? He is after all not a a first language speaker and was trying to indicate that they were willing to lay down their lives for Zuma. It may have just been a mistranslation but no one should have to die in order for someone to become leader. Who does he envisage might ask that of him? Mr Zuma himself? We need a statement from JZ saying that he wants to be voted in not died for.

Tim 7/3/2008 2:44:14 PM
Did he retract his statement and apologise? All Animals are equal, but some are just more equal than others. No Faith!

MP3 7/3/2008 2:50:20 PM
His statement is tantamount to treason.

Paul 7/3/2008 2:53:28 PM
Well i hope from now on, the media will leave Malema alone, there are so many many challenges facing this country yet i couldn't understand this obsession with Malema's uttarances, instead of channeling our energies towards issues which will take this country forward. This is the same behaviour from the media and so called political commentators which was dished to JZ, and it didn't help. Let's give attention to proverty and unemployment in the same way we are did to Zim, JZ, Malema,Vavi etc,

Ederik 7/3/2008 2:55:40 PM
If he does not apologise in public and retract his words in front of all his followers it means less than nothing. It is like killing somebody, say sorry will not do it again, and then think everything is going to be OK? No ways!

Edward 7/3/2008 2:56:54 PM
Out of the abundance of the heart and mind, the mind speaks. Even apology is not enough. This is what he believes in and will want to govern by it.If Zuma is convicted or about to be convicted someone will be killed. watch this unless Zuma goes free.

Frans 7/3/2008 3:00:27 PM
Ok, so he can use words like murder, destroy, eviscerate etc. as long aqs he doesn't use the word kill. There never was and never will be any ambiguity with regards to the word kill, regardless of context. And if it was meant that they would die for Zuma, who are the ones that will kill them?

Kabelo 7/3/2008 3:00:39 PM
I think Mr malema must be taught how to speak at public places and they must take him to a Leadership Workshop for 6months were he can learn all this leadership Dynamics for him to be a good leader. he has potential but he lacks skill.

Tracker 7/3/2008 3:03:54 PM
The HRC first demanded Malema to apologise in public, now they are all satisfied behind closed doors that he will never say it again! who are they trying to fool or protect. the public is expecting a public apology especially the youth. He addressed more than 10 000 people on that day.........but only apologised to four people in the boardroom. HRC should also act in the public interest or sooner they will be labelled Zuma supporters.

Dear God, the universe, Allah, Budha... Please give South Africa intelligent leaders who are respectable, innovative, global and good role models. Our youth, especially need to be inspired to get a good education. We, thus, ask you for educated leaders. Amen South Africa
