Johannesburg - South Africa has entered a period that will test its fortitude as a nation and the ability to protect the gains that have been made, President Kgalema Motlanthe said on Friday.

"We have had over four years of fairly rapid economic growth when we were able to add hundreds of thousands of new jobs annually ... When the incomes of ordinary South Africans grew four percent a year on average, and when government was able to increase its expenditure, especially on social services, by nearly ten percent a year," he said addressing members of the National Council of Provinces in Lady Frere, Eastern Cape.

Motlanthe said the country's living standards had been steadily improving as it steadily but surely chipped away at the scourge of unemployment.

He said in the midst of this growing optimism, a sudden black cloud had descended on the world economy, posing a threat to the gains SA had made.

An international financial crisis had recently erupted, pushing many parts of the world's economy into a slowdown, with especially some highly industrialised countries expecting very low growth or even the shrinking of their economies.

Financial institutions tested

"In South Africa we have had to lower our expectations too, not because our own financial sector is threatened; it is not," Motlanthe said.

He said the country's financial institutions had been scrutinised, they had been tested.

"And they had passed those tests with flying colours."

Motlanthe said in South Africa it has been a slowdown off a secure base with sound fundamentals, unlike in some other countries where the cutbacks had been catastrophic.

"We are not going to enter a recession, and indeed we expect our economic performance to be better than that of many of our peers."

The ANC has been tested and found wanting. They regard the opportunity to govern as a right, not a privilege. They have abused the electorate, and now that they are threatened by a break-away, their response is to villify and threaten through morons like Malema. Zuma is a disgrace to SA, as is Malema, Yengeni and Co. The legacy inherited from Sisulu, Mandela and Tutu is gone. Bring on a decent government, and get rid of this rubbish!

Motlanthe, your leader zuma wants a machine gun and your youth leader wants to kill the opposition to zuma. Then they intimidate the contitutional court judges and delay zuma's day in court. Do you think things have not already been testing, or to be blunt, frightening in south afirca? Wake up.

Sorry - Am I missing something?? Who is this Motlanthe? What happened to Zuma - Why is he not speaking? Help I am confused...

At last we have a President who sounds, acts and responds like a president, the first guy who seems to be confident enough to admit problems and not blame it on colonists, apartheid, racists or the West. This seems to be a great break with the previous presidency and the new approach on Zim, I predict, will ensure a better legacy in 6 months than Mbeki?s entire 2 terms.

If only Motlanthe could stand as the ANC president. FAR better candidate than Zuma. "when government was able to increase its expenditure" - Reminds me of the Armsdeal. R50 BILLION, that could have lifted a HUGE percentage of SA out of poverty. In all honesty, I have lost ALL faith in the ANC.

I HATE PEOPLE TO COMPARE THE NEW PARTY AND THE RULLING PARTY ,IF THEY FORM THEIR OWN PARTY LET THEM DO SO.THE ANC IS GOING TO RULE THIS COUNTRY UNTIL JESUS COME BACK.WHAT EVER YOU QUIT OR NOT,THIS IS THE RULLING PARTY(ANC).AMANDLA!!COMRADES!!

it is unfortunate that SA govmnt is experiencing an economic night mare in this era of our democracy. The president must ensure that petrol price goes down, platinum improves, GDP and GNP are on sound footing

Mandla 11/7/2008 4:09:36 PM
Where are those that say ANC has no leaders. This man will be a deputy to our future President Zuma and will be president after one term of Zuma. Motlanthe is one of the great leaders this country has produced.
