Malema: We are sorry

2008-11-25 10:37

Johannesburg - ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has apologised for creating the impression that he was inciting violence with his "kill for Zuma" statements, a spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

"People are uncomfortable with the way in which we have spoken before and we are indeed very, very sorry for that," said ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, a day after the national executive committee of the ANC met and discussed, among other things, Malema's controversial statements.

Shivambu confirmed that Malema's apology, in an interview on Talk Radio 702 on Monday afternoon, was in the context of his "kill for Zuma" statements.

"If we did sound like we're inciting violence, we are very sorry," Malema said.

"That was not our intention; we'll never incite violence. We will never do anything unconstitutional. We are law-abiding citizens of this country and we will protect the Constitution of this republic.

"We fought for it and we stand by it," said Malema.

He was replying to an SMS from a listener which stated: "Stop inciting violence".

Controversial statements

Shivambu said that even though the ANCYL did not believe it was inciting violence with the "kill for Zuma" statements, it was sorry if that impression was created.

While the ANC has defended Malema, its president Jacob Zuma recently said he had advised Malema to stop making controversial statements.

Malema's statements have been used as ammunition by ANC breakaway party, the Congress of the People, whose leader Terror Lekota has accused the youth leader of acting in an unconstitutional manner.

Malema last year said the youth league would kill for ANC leader Jacob Zuma. Since then, apparently after ANC leaders rebuked him in private, he has replaced the word "kill" with "eliminate" in similar statements.

More recently, Malema accused Northern Cape premier Dipuo Peters of being "bought" by business.

He also called Cope co-leader Mbhazima Shilowa, the former premier of Gauteng, a "security guard" who had defaulted on child support payments.

The ANC on Monday accused the media of "Malemaphobia" and said the only Malema statement it could find fault with was the "kill for Zuma" remark.

Meanwhile, Cope's youth leader Anele Mda is in the hot water for saying South Africa would have a "government that is going to make raping official", referring to the rape charge on which Zuma was acquitted last year.

Cope is expected to issue a statement related to her remarks on Tuesday.

That Malema and the ANC did not think is true. That they claim to be law abiding citizens is debatable. The ANC has long since shown their true colours. No amount of "apologising" is going to fool the international community as well as the citizens of South Africa.

jackey 11/25/2008 11:06:26 AM
The ANC has finally woken up and relised that their brainless idiotic youthleader has caused mass damage to their campaign and I for on dont not trust anyone of them..after elections we will simply continue what he does best..Encite hate speech and violence, What more do you expect from someone that failed woodwork..

nkosi 11/25/2008 11:12:53 AM
Point of correction, Malema made that statement THIS YEAR, in winter and not last year as you report! What kind of jounalism is this??

Skywalker 11/25/2008 11:15:49 AM
Who are THEY? Malema made those statement, HE must be sorry for MAKING the statements, not be sorry that the people construe it as citing violence! If I said I will kill to make sure the DA wins the elections, what does that mean? Meanwhile, he has not retracted his statement! He made it at a public gathering with thousands of supporters who are now fighting his fight by intimidating COPE members.Did he tell them that he was wrong, they must not kill for Zuma??? A joke this guy is!

Nicole 11/25/2008 11:16:02 AM
Jacob Zuma and Malema offend me in every way possible. Zuma has many wives, treats women like cattle or something that you can collect. I don't care if it is his culture, some things have to change to keep up with the times. And the fact that he has even been accused of rape and gone to trial where he admitted to sleeping with a girl who thought of him like an uncle is reason enough not to vote for him. He obviously has no respect for women, hence I have no respect for him, and Malema is the same

RUDOLF 11/25/2008 11:20:42 AM
I for one do not take anything Malema says seriously. I doubt the sincerity of the apology and believe it was simply done to take the heat off the ANC. Some things said are not easily undone. I believe Malema will still experience this truth.

Fanie Gerber 11/25/2008 11:22:00 AM
As Jackey said to little to late Funny though - "Julius.......SIT!!! and lo and behold Julius sat" cracking of the wip in the background BTW he failed woodwork .....are you serious!! ROFLMAO!!!

Ruan 11/25/2008 11:22:18 AM
Blah Blah blah! Elecion are around the corner and they are dancing to a different beat now. Come after the elections, they will put on their true colour again.

Jlopean 11/25/2008 11:23:50 AM
Ohhh shoot ...we need to start securing votes...malema shut the #$%#% up.

Andre 11/25/2008 11:23:57 AM
And now we have to believe them after they have shown their contempt with arrogance and self-righteousness. The ANC is burning and they are trying to recover. If Malema resigns then I will believe his sincerety on the issue.

John 11/25/2008 11:25:41 AM
Sorry Julius.....too late. You have shown your true colours of an idiotic, "say anything to look good" cheap politician. How dare you compare yourself to the great Madiba by saying he acted the same when he was your age. He was fighting for a just cause, and you are fighting for self recognition. History is littered with your type.

Dave 11/25/2008 11:26:00 AM
No need ranting and raving on this topic. One would like to think he is doing this out the kindness of his heart, and not because elections are around the corner. Anyways his touching story does not touch my heart. bye for now

LB 11/25/2008 11:27:19 AM
Do their supporters know that they were not inciting violence?? The ANC did not force this idiot to apologise earlier because they thought they had the monopoly, Thanks to COPE, they are now in big big trouble! I agree, no amount of apologising is going to save them now. The time has come for new leadership

nthatuwa 11/25/2008 11:30:06 AM
What the hell?Damn the ANC,wat do they take us for?Don't they know that people are smarter these these days to see whaen an advert is lying just to sell a product?Well,we aren't the fools they take us for,(except for a few ignorant ones who are still loyal supporters). What, are we now suppose to say,"oh well,he has apologised, din't mean it,he's smarter than that, now we'll vote the ANC?...HELL NO.THE DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE.FORGET IT....MATSHILA A BARENG KE MALEMA!!!

Glock 22c 11/25/2008 11:31:36 AM
But are you or is this just true ANC style when the heat turns up? Sorry I dont baleev a word the ANC say , I am not part of th uneducated masses , go lie to them !

nthatuwa 11/25/2008 11:33:08 AM
Does anyone still remember when did he say this? And he apologises now,on radio, not TELEVISIO(sabc). And all ANC spokepeople have now been sent out to cover his dirt, apologise on his behalf.Wow!!!

Axe 11/25/2008 11:35:56 AM
Took forever for this little fool to sit when told to. Reminds me of the time lapse between "Kill the Boer" dance and the feeble explanation afterwards! Or the "misinterpreted" excuse?

KEAOBAKA 11/25/2008 11:36:16 AM
yes SHILOWA failed to maintain his child & was security guard,ZUMA WAS ACCUSED OF RAPING AND ITS TRUE WHY SHOULD WE HIDE,THE WORLD KNOWS ABOUT IT,ANELE MDA IS RIGHT.ANC STARTED THIS BY CALLING OTHER NAMES LIKE SNAKES,DOGS.KEAOBAKA TAUNG

Thato 11/25/2008 11:37:16 AM
That wasn't hard, now was it? This better be sincere otherwise...Before you get too excited, don't think that this little gesture of pity is going to bring me back to the ANC. No bra, it doesn't work like that, maybe after the next elections. This time around, I've already made up my mind.

tiekies 11/25/2008 11:38:22 AM
Now we must forgive you ? Dream on , You meant what you said I know that !

Jhazzman 11/25/2008 11:41:04 AM
I am sorry, but this is a well planned apology. He isn't sorry, the only reason the ANC is making hime do this, is because it's getting close to Election time and they know that he is one of many things wrong with the ANC and that is costing them voters .... Have a Good Day :-)

Ras 11/25/2008 11:41:34 AM
"We fought for it and we stand by it," said Malema. Since when was Malema part of the struggle?

Mama Tequila 11/25/2008 11:42:04 AM
I wonder if he would have apologised if COPE had not been formed and was not a threat to the ANC. After all he was slammed for his remarks before COPE was formed and he is only apologising now. Dont have to be a genius to figure this one out but certainly one has to be really ignorant to think that we will fall for it. Oh and by the way he is only apologising for the impression his statement made......mmmmmm

John 11/25/2008 11:42:15 AM
From my time in the military and in civvy street, you can say what you like, they still mean the same. "Kill", "eliminate", "terminate", "de-capitate", "cull" are all words that mean the same thing. If you say kill, that's what it is kill! Apologies, well they are only worth anything if sincere, and we know how sincere Malema is. You are not sincere about apologising if you are told to apologise. Trust is something earned, not given. The ANCYL, the ANC are not trustworthy, bottom line.

David 11/25/2008 11:44:22 AM
Anyone knows the story about a leopard and his spots. Do we really think that they Malema and Zuma will change? Did Malema not say that he will not apologise for those outbursts and only now months later he gets reprimanded by his party and this is the result.

CITIZEN TOO 11/25/2008 11:52:21 AM
COPE is certainly hurting the ANC band of disruptors of this country - it's about time politicians become concerned with the citizens of SA not thier own agenda and ANC dictatorship. VIVA COPE their youth leader is certainly one who can be commended for her outlook to SA maybe we can be re born again to the be Rainbow Nation once again. VIVA COPE!

Peter 11/25/2008 11:53:27 AM
Give Malema his due - he is destined to go down in history alongside such greats as Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe and George Bush - all ego-maniacal and war mongering idiots....

Sven Gohre 11/25/2008 11:55:40 AM
I was under the impression that Malema had stated that he was never going to apologise for his statement "Kill for Zuma". Funny how politicians believe that Joe citizen is stupid and cannot remember what was said yesterday. Is the ANC starting to realise that they may have a small problem next year of achieving their normal 2/3 majority? A little late me thinks.

Abie 11/25/2008 11:59:32 AM
Still the ANC's kindergarden headboy (who looks like he is in his thirties) , who failed woodwork, does not apologize himself. One of his other henchmen must do it for him. Ja right, with elections around the corner???? P.S. I wonder what his tradional name is. He uses this so called white europian name. Eish!!!

Francois 11/25/2008 12:00:50 PM
I heard Malema on 702 and quite frankly when some dude phoned in to say that Malema is nothing like what the media portrays him to be, I ALMOST puke out of disbelieve. OFCOURSE he is going to "behave" himself as he is now life for all to hear, The guy is a total MORON and I cannot believe that our country's fate is in the hands of such IDIOTS. Is this what the new South Africa means? My dear God, Viva HELL VIVA!

TK 11/25/2008 12:01:39 PM
One comrade of mine who studies @ the University of Limpopo told me that in a recent visit 2 dat institution, Malema advised all to ensure all COPE activists are chased away if they try to mobilise COPE in the area. Statements like 'make them run' were used. Now that is no different from 'Kill for Zuma', coz it will still amount to the same violence perpetuated by the ANC on COPE meetings of late. Mbeki might have b'n a Mugabe maybe(??!!). But Zuma and his cronies are vivid hooligans & Barbarian.

CTheB 11/25/2008 12:04:02 PM
JZ recently stated that every child in school should be forced to pray, regardless of whether they believe in a god. That's not supporting the constitution. I heard that Malema believes that all parties other than the ANC should be banned, forming a one party state, only one step away from dictatorship. That's not supporting the constitution. They lie and connive at their convenience. So do other politicians, of course, but what concerns me here is the significance of what the ANC is lying about.

Tommy Chetty 11/25/2008 12:04:06 PM
The Malema issue is disgraceful to say the least. Uneducated, inexperienced, good for nothing loud mouths are just that. Refined, cultured members of the ANC (All NAIVE CROOKS)are very few to be found. Jacob Zuma should have sacked Malema. I have a feeling MR. Thabo Mbeki did not fit the calibre these uncultured waste of a human being.

Johannes N A Pretorius 11/25/2008 12:04:43 PM
A typical case of foot and mouth disease to go with mad cow disease

Wisdom 11/25/2008 12:05:36 PM
See the value of COPE is already showing!

XENO 11/25/2008 12:05:44 PM
I think he should apologise on national TV in person.

Martha 11/25/2008 12:06:42 PM
?We are sorry.? The royal We? What a joke. Sounds somewhat pretentious & hypocritical, and after a long debate with Their PRO, decided to say what the pipol want to hear - just to sooooth, sooooth... Unfortunately there are too many naïve & ignorant idiots that may believe them.
