DA goes after Yengeni cops

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance has laid a criminal complaint against two policemen who have confessed involvement in the bid to cover up Tony Yengeni's drunken driving arrest.

DA Western Cape spokesperson on community safety, Lennit Max, said he laid the complaint at Cape Town's Caledon Square police station on Monday .

Constables Charles Jaftha and Jeremy Voskuil have admitted in testimony at Yengeni's drunk driving trial that they wrote false statements, though they said they were intimidated by their commanding officer, Senior Superintendent Siphiwe Hewana.

Hewana is already facing a charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

In a statement, Max also called for the constables to be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Western Cape police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Billy Jones confirmed that Max submitted a statement.

However it was at this stage unlikely that another case of defeating the ends of justice would be registered for investigation.

"It will just be a duplication, because there is already a case of defeating the ends of justice that implicates a number [of] police members," he said.
