Shilowa resigns 'out of principle'

2008-09-29 14:34

Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa has announced his resignation.

"I am resigning due to my convictions that while the ANC has the right to recall any of its deployed cadres, the decision needs to be based on solid facts, be fair and just.

"I also did not feel that I will be able to, with conviction, publicly explain or defend the NEC's decision on comrade Thabo Mbeki," Shilowa told reporters in Johannesburg on Monday.

He denied that he had been "pushed" to resign but said he was doing it out of principle.

"It is a known fact that I hold strong views on the manner of his dismissal and to pretend otherwise would be disingenuous," Shilowa said, referring to the ANC National Executive Committee's decision to remove Mbeki from office.

"I acknowledge and respect the ANC's rights to recall any of its deployed cadres. I am, however, of the view that there was no cogent reason for doing so."

Shilowa denied rumours that he was starting or would be part of a new political party.

"I know of no group who is starting another new party. I cannot be party to something I do not know," Shilowa said.

Goodbye comrade Mbhazima Shilowa goodbye, we will not miss you!!! I'm sure comrade Paul Mashatile is more than ready to take over.

Nicholas Solani 9/29/2008 2:53:37 PM
No matter how much the current ANC leadership can pretend they do not care about the current developments in the party and the government at large, sooner or later they are bound to hit hard where it matters most (in the voters count). The sooner they recognize they have a problem (rumours about the new party being formed) the better.

SA citizen 9/29/2008 2:54:55 PM
Comrade, you have served us in Gauteng province with great dignity. All people of Gauteng province. We are greatful for that. Time is running out, enough with denying a new political party, time is running out, get on with it already so we can sign up, and be card carrying members, and start enlightening other comrades who might still be in the dark as to what is happening in the country right now.

Mike H 9/29/2008 2:56:19 PM
Well done! At last someone who is prncipled enough to do the right thing. The top brass of the ANC seem to think that whatever they do is right.Perhaps Shilowa will influence some of the voters into doing the right thing also!

lloyd macklin 9/29/2008 2:58:24 PM
..no wonder he was on the new regimes 'hit list'. I cannot understand how, with so many now demonstrating their inate integrity, they allowed the party to be hijacked by the opportunistic parasites. Where were these good people when corruption and nepotism was rife? I am not a ANC supporter but did, at one time, believe that they held the moral high ground. If only they realised that their natural home, based on principles, is the DA!

Nicholas Solani 9/29/2008 3:00:48 PM
How many prominent leaders must resign before South Africa realizes that ANC only belongs to a few individuals between Cosatu, SACP and itself? It so much looks like we all must belong to one school of thoughts to be South Africans, that of Blade Nzimande, Zwelinzima Vavi, and their likes...we will loose all the good people. SA lets do something about and now.

Thokozani 9/29/2008 3:02:09 PM
Typical Mbeki's lap-dog..What has become evident is that Ministers and Premiers don't understand why they were given these positions, which is simple of course to serve the people of South Africa. People like Shilowa and his friends were given these positions to support Mbeki. He might as well be gone, we don't need someone like that. His reasoning is very shallow

goons 9/29/2008 3:02:53 PM
wether he was forced out or he resigned out of principle, i dont care.. I want to hear more new about the finacial crisis and how it impacting us. that is high on my agenda than wether shilowa resign or not who cares. Please put focus where it is needed..thanks

Linds 9/29/2008 3:06:02 PM
According to a survey conducted by Markinor, the performance of premiers was rated as follows in 2008: Western Cape - 40%, Gauteng - 49%, North West - 53%, Free State - 55%, Eastern Cape - 55%, Limpopo - 64%, KwaZulu-Natal - 66%, Northern Cape - 81%. So Shilowa is the 2nd worst performing Premier.

Rudolf Gouws 9/29/2008 3:07:56 PM
We are living in "interesting" times. Do not change too many names as yet. Some may well have to be changed again. And not in the too distant future. From what I could see you did well Mr Shilowa. At least you go with your selfrespect intact.

Mo 9/29/2008 3:11:35 PM
We wish you an honourable exit. Mbeki has fallen on his sword again. They fired Mr. Sexwale and Mr. Motshekga both as premiers because they were opposing Mr. Mbeki. Let Mr. Shilowa fall on Mbeki's sword also.

Jenny Nel 9/29/2008 3:12:17 PM
I wish Mr Shilowa well, but its time that this "comrade" business was put away where all other failed communist trash is packed. Communism is a good theory but a dismal failure in practice. Enough of the "Comrade".

Aya 9/29/2008 3:13:29 PM
I HEAR ZWELINZIMA VAVI AND JULIUS MALEMA ARE POTENTIAL CANDIDATES TO REPLACE HIM...... TOO BAD ALL THIS DRAMA HAPPENED WHILE FIKILE MBALULA IS IN THE BUSH......HE MUST BE KICKING HIMSELF, HE DROVE THIS MOVEMENT AT SOME POINT..

alan 9/29/2008 3:14:33 PM
Mr Shilowa had foresight and leadership, he did a lot of good for the province and has now demonstrated his personal integrity. The current rabble of loud mouth chancers "leading" the ANC clearly don't understand nor care about any of those concepts, neither do they care about South Africa or its citizens, they only care about themselves! Mr Shilowa will be missed!

New ANC 9/29/2008 3:14:50 PM
Okay Sam... it's like this. History has a tendency to repeat itself. So there was NP and they made terrible mistakes... and voila "N.NP". So there was ANC and they... and voila "N.ANC". NOW ALL OF YOU KNOW OF A NEW GROUP. DON'T BE CHICKEN, REWRITE THE HISTORY BOOKS.

Trade Mark 9/29/2008 3:16:03 PM
I am not sure about shilowa being a Mbeki Lapdog. Thokozani my friend, I hope two years down the line you will still be saying the same thing about the Mbeki leadership. How can one compare Mbeki to JZ?

Tzozo 9/29/2008 3:20:49 PM
No one cares whether you resigned or not anyway what have you done.Bye bye shh lowa and take care of your children.

Takalani Munzhelele 9/29/2008 3:22:09 PM
I was staying gauteng eversince 1996, i have never saw a premier who manage like the way Mr Shilowa did, ANC should learn how meet citizen needs from Shilowa. They must continue to form a new party, we want join as soon as they launch it. All the best Shilowa, i am your supporter for a new party that will compose by people with intergrity not Jacob Zuma and his friends who have only one reason, to feel their pocket. Takalani Gauteng

careful 9/29/2008 3:23:36 PM
it worries me the arogance and stupidity potrayed by JZ backers are they worried that some of the ANC memember who are resigning have constituancies that will follow them. ANC will fall come next year's elections. VIVA THABO MBEKI VIVA

Ada 9/29/2008 3:27:39 PM
when will you people realize that resigning from parliament doesn't mean that you will vote for another party like the DA, no matter what. That would mean that their struggle was for nothing.Mbeki himself will vote ANC.Viva ANC

Akhuna mathata 9/29/2008 3:33:15 PM
Guteng has been ravaged by poverty, crime, zenophobic killings and no leadership ever took charge and resolved the crisis. I think Mbazima is doing the noble thing of leaving his office early, I hope he is not pushed due to poor peformance. Hamba Kahle Comrade

Jon Qwelane 9/29/2008 3:35:32 PM
Shilowa gone! I say good riddance to all Mbeki's poodles: Malombo-Ngcuka, the Moleketi couple, the Pahad siblings, Mufamadi, Lekota, George, Erwin, Kasrils, and now the Fidelity Guards "mantshingilani" Shilowa. They've all gone to the forest to join their boss, the big bad wolf. Good riddance! Talk of a new party may be a little risky, buggers: just ask Holomisa what happens to all bantus with such ambitionsa Anyway, its top members will be Mbeki and his ancient mother. -- Speed Cop.

chris 9/29/2008 3:39:28 PM
Any Markinor survey that rates the Eastern Cape at 55%, and therefore higher than Gauteng, is seriously warped. Everyone knows what a disaster the EC is.

FriendOfDemocracy 9/29/2008 3:43:41 PM
So what the ANC has left is a bunch of howling bafoons like Malema. From OR to Malema. How the hell did that happen? All the best Shilowa. Hope that break away party comes through and you join it.

Vicky 9/29/2008 3:44:42 PM
do you realise that Gauteng is the economic power house of SA? Did you know that KZN/E.Cape/Limpopo has highest rate of unemployment/poverty/hiv/aids/corruption to name but a few socio economic problems. What does that say about premiers in those provinces? seriously ppl like you should stop being in denial about issues that affect our country as a result of mismanagement by the anc/bee fat cats!!

Afrikado 9/29/2008 3:45:06 PM
The likes of Jabu Moleketi, Azziz Pahad and now Shilowa are rapaciously raping the concept of principle with wanton abandon. When the ex-Pres TM releaved the then Dep-Pres JZ of his duties, none pleaded principle. Guys you can resign without stooping low, unless you forsee criminal charges alluded to by Nicholson J succesfully incriminating you then I see no issue of principle in your conduct. Pah!

Zama 9/29/2008 3:45:58 PM
Well done Shilowa it is clear that there are people out there who still have some integrity on thier minds, its about time we givethe ANC a real run

P Cook 9/29/2008 3:46:14 PM
Why all the vehement denial of another political party when there is so much evidence to the contrary. This is surely the worst kept sectret in the world ? Why not just admit to it and get on with it?

This is a Democratic country people must do what they feel. All those who resign is their choice. They symphatise with Mbeki or not.

I would like to express my appreciation for the work that Shilowa,Rasool and Balindlela did for their provinces and for the country. It is a fact that Presidents Mbeki's cabinet performed their tasks with dignity, dedication and love for the country. But I also have faith in Monthlante and I wish he could be the president of the country next year post elections too,not that arrogant Zuma and his bull-dogs!!

Aluta 9/29/2008 3:50:45 PM
It sounds as if you have a personal problem with the man. I think he did the right thing. If people were still planning to humiliate him, they are dissappointed.

Afrikado 9/29/2008 3:58:10 PM
What is good for the JZ is good for TM.

nathinyce 9/29/2008 3:59:28 PM
....when Zuma was dismissed, people forgot their principles. Zuma was not an ordinary member of the ANC! He was the country`s deputy PRESIDENT! For crying out loud! He was a heart beat from running the country. People have conviniently forgoten Mbeki`s disrespect of Zuma then. Zuma was also fired for inferences made against him in a case that had nothing to do with him. What goes around......

Jeff 9/29/2008 4:13:57 PM
bad news hey. this is bad for RSA. the worse is to come. but please guys don't start a new organisation. please. just go back to your branchies and work. give these pleople one term they will destroy themselfs. you wait and see.

mandla 9/29/2008 4:15:28 PM
To call it a "recall" was a good attempt in euphemism. All said and done it was a bloody dirty hatchet job made more galling and terrible because of the character of the man for whom it was done. Is he really worth all the self-mutilation by the ANC?

Vicky 9/29/2008 4:15:41 PM
keeping up with the charade and lies and not blush. How did this once great party came to this? it really must pain tata Nelson Mandela and other veterans of the anc to watch their hard work coming to this. Haven't these new leaders got no shame or conscience left? reducing the once world respected party into a corrupt bully's paradise? the anc will never recover from this mess.

Makhosonke Nhlapo 9/29/2008 4:16:47 PM
Shilowa and friends - The resignations we see happening now, they are the simple truth about who where they serving, the country? or an individual?. Shilowa, Mbeki etc they were not ANC but for ANC. One can never serve more than one Party/President go well in your new party; hope all of you will be awarded with top possitions because if not the same back stabbing will happen. Who said you will all die ministers - no 3rd term in ANC finish!!!

ZAKHELE 9/29/2008 4:18:51 PM
Ok! all I am asking, is for the government to provide councelling for the many of us in SA who are traumatized after this past week... and perharps the rest of year... five years...who knows when this circus will be over???

Lungig 9/29/2008 4:23:00 PM
Some may say what they want about Shilowa , he was the best and It's his democratic right to do as he pleases. Let's see who will manage to achieve what he has in the small space of time he was premier.Farewell comrade . I hope you're not completely lost to the politics of this country as we need man of you true standing

Nkateko 9/29/2008 4:27:12 PM
The laws of causality demand that 'for every action there is a consequence', it may be in the negative or in the positive, but we will surely see the effects of these actions. Our opnions are just a part of the effect, but the real consequence shall duly be seen in due coiurse!

Proudly SA 9/29/2008 4:28:40 PM
In all this commotion, service delivery to the poor is affected. Which they (Zuma &CO) claim to represent, I am convinced there was a better way to deal with all these ANC matters without affecting the economy, investor confidence and the unnecessary stress caused to people of SA. Instead they were consumed by their hatred for T.Mbeki. Expectaions are high lets see if they genuine and concerned in the first place. Hahaha bunch of monkeys! Sijongile Sizohla efileyo.

Happy 9/29/2008 4:35:58 PM
It all started in Polokwane, Shilowa's candidate was defeated by JZ and Shilowa did not accept it.Asikuncengi Shilowa, You will easily be replaced...we need people who are committed to serve the S.A citizens no matter what!

Mpetle Mahlanya 9/29/2008 4:57:53 PM
Recent resignations by the ANC's ministers (incl. Premier Mbazima Shiluwa) are clear indication that these people were not deployed to public offices to serve the interest of the masses of the people of South Africa, but to serve and promote the interest of the former president. People like these do not deserve any space within the ranks of the ANC and government. There are many caders out there who are more than willing to serve the people of this country with dignity and commitment.

BAZOOKA 9/29/2008 5:04:37 PM
WELL DONE MR PREMIER, ATLEAST WE HAVE A NUMBER OF PRINCIPLED LEADERS. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SOMEONE WHO PROVIDE US WITH AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANC. HOPEFULLY THE GREAT MINDS WILL MEET AND PROVIDE US WITH SUCH.

Red5 9/29/2008 5:39:11 PM
It is good to see some integrity left in politics. I think it unfair to say that Mr. Shilowa's reasoning is shallow. He is among the few who has the guts to stand by their beliefs. Remember that at one time Mr. Zuma was also appointed by Mr. Mbeki (to support him). People must realise that serving the interest of the people of SA is not necessarily equivalent to serving the interest of the ANC (or Mr. Zuma).

john mazinyo 9/29/2008 5:59:38 PM
Shilowa;s resignation is a good riddance. It is clear that he paid his allegiece to another memeber of the anc not the anc itself. That member once attacked the alliance partners by calling them ultra liftists and completed by saying everyone joined the anc voluntarily and must leave voluntarily ( better fewer but better )chikens are now coming home to roast. Thanks for going Shilowa.

Titus Matlawe 9/29/2008 6:42:58 PM
The country is held to ransom by a bunch of corrupt hooligans who think they are or desire to be the law unto themselves. No sane ANC cadres can serve under war mongers; Zuma's claim that the transition has been without any bloodshed is unfortunate & untrue, ANC member was stabbed in the neck in the Western Cape! Zuma & all the hooligans that supporters are the law unto themselves!
