Zuma chosen as Africa's finest

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma had the prestigious African President of the Year Award 2009 bestowed on him on Tuesday.

"As we accept these awards, it is proper that we pay special tribute to our African elders who fought for freedom and independence," Zuma said at the African Consciousness Media Leadership Awards ceremony in Johannesburg.

"These leaders fought for the unity of the African people," he said.

The award, founded by the African Consciousness Media and the Kenneth Kaunda Foundation, recognises achievement and serves to honour African leaders.

Africans appreciating their own

Zuma said: "What is most special about the award is that it is Africans recognising what they regard as achievement and appreciating their own.

"While individuals are singled out for awards, this ceremony is also about acknowledging the collective efforts of Africa's people to build a better life".

African leaders pledged that they would strive for the eradication of poverty, disease and conflict, he said. They pledged to promote trade, investment, economic growth, skills development and stability on the continent.

"To promote good governance, we established the African Peer Review Mechanism. To foster economic integration and development, we established the New Partnership for Africa's Development.

"These must be the instruments we use to advance the cause of our continent," said Zuma.

'Leaders not above people'

He said if leaders faltered, they expected ordinary citizens, civil society, academics and the media to sound warning bells.

"Good leaders heed these warnings and respond constructively. They do not consider themselves to be above their people," he said.

Zuma said the awards helped remind African leaders of their responsibilities to the people.

"A true leader is guided by the needs and the collective wisdom of the people. These awards should therefore not be about status or prestige, but service and sacrifice."

Zuma particularly praised Zambian former president Kenneth Kaunda for "his brand of ubuntu", which he said had been a guiding moral compass in that country.

"It is a special privilege to receive this award from President Kaunda in particular Zambia. The former headquarters of the ANC was our home away from home due to Kaunda's solidarity and hospitality that we will never forget as South Africans," he said.

Zuma was elected South African president in April.

Well, naturally, congratulations pres. Zuma. The standards used is actually irrelevant. You pulled it of, and are slowly convincing me, a former harsh critic of yourself, that you are indeed good news. I sincerely hope you can maintain this level of skill and compromise. As a white male, at the age where I am right at the back of the queue, due to political agendas, at last you seem to be on the right road. A forced cynic, I do have a smatter of hope...But I remain what I am, Sir, as you do, to. Optimistic, but very wary. Please, without directly discussing your predecessor, keep your eyes firmly on the goal posts, and do not get sidetracked, please! Now, let us get back to work.

Fani 11/11/2009 1:22:40 AM
Viva my President Viva!! Please Bring back Godsell and fire Jacob Maroga. Msholozi! Nxamalala!

Steve 11/11/2009 1:35:35 AM
Pres Zuma has not done anything yet. Why was he given this prize?

Zuma Uma 11/11/2009 1:39:47 AM
Let just hope and pray freedom and independence can sustain under Zuma, cos all the people see are corruption, deteriorating services and crime – is this freedom? Is this independence?

Jan Jacobs, Bellville 11/11/2009 5:53:47 AM
No mean feat for a man who rose from a herdsboy to president of the leading state in Africa! With little education he has pulled himself up by the bootstraps. Go, Jacob, go!

jovi 11/11/2009 6:26:29 AM
First Obhama gets peace award after very hort period in office , and now JZ gets president award , and he has not proven himeself at all.Quite the contrary - Rome burns !
I supose it is like the Oscars , if they make a batch of poor movies , the best one , will get an Oscar - the only qualifying criteria is that it is a movie. So , JZ is new and weak president , and is best in Africa - that is NOT good news for the rest of the Presidents out there.

Mike Lester 11/11/2009 6:31:52 AM
When you look at the calibre of the rest of the African presidents, you start to realise that it is hardly an achievement to win this award. It's like winning an award for being the best of the worst.

"Strive for the eradication of poverty" "promote good governance" makes one think

Heather Hart 11/11/2009 7:10:55 AM
Well if Zuma is the best Africa has to offer no wonder the continent is in the state it is. His comment that no leader is above the law is a joke coming from him.

adrian 11/11/2009 7:24:58 AM
I believe it was a close call between Zuma , the Somalia warlords and Bob Mugabe.

sihle 11/11/2009 7:25:39 AM
my president, well deserved

Sbonelo 11/11/2009 7:44:48 AM
Well done my president well done!!!!
I wonder what it tastes like to eat ones own words, maybe a bit of humble pie may help to sweeten the meal?
Its high time the white people accepted that JZ is their president aswell. He is our leader and is turning this country around from the days of apartheid. I am tired of certain people refusing to accept JZ as their president!!!

Tessa (the real one) 11/11/2009 7:48:32 AM
All apoligies from those who screamed, rapist, criminal and corrupt are ready to be received now.
Funny how the rest of the world think Msholozi is a good pres and yet the colonial bigots who havent run to australia yet say he is everything under the sun. How is this possible?

Richard 11/11/2009 7:52:52 AM
So after serving less than 7 months in office, Mr JZ has been elected as the best African president of the year. During this 7 months, the SABC board has dissolved, Eskom no longer has a head, riots about service delivery have taken place, and we had police shooting at the army! Well done Mr President. It appears that the quality of the other candidates must have been attrocious if the above made for a winning combination!

DaveG 11/11/2009 8:02:02 AM

What a dismal state of affairs - I mean really, look at who is in the running with him.. Gaddafi, Mugabi,Al Basheer - my what an illustrious lot! I am shocked that the president of Botswana did not win actually, they seem to be the country that is actually doing the best in Africa. So, after 7 months of the worst rioting in years, total collapse of service delivery, corruption, rape of tax coffers, this man, an "alleged" rapist gets to be the best Africa has to offer - I am disgusted and I would like to know, who the hell voted - did anyone know about these awards? Were ordinary citizens of all the African nations invited to vote? How can we take any of this seriously? The man has not kept his word at all???? And lets not forget, he had hundreds of counts of fraud charges that have just conveniently been swept under Luthuli Houses' carpet

Richard 11/11/2009 8:16:37 AM
what the hell has he done to deserve the prize????

Jim 11/11/2009 8:19:14 AM
If he is the best I would hate to know who is the worst

Wow 11/11/2009 8:20:28 AM
Wow......the bar must have been set really low....what's next the Nobel Peace Prize?? considering the competion with the other African "leaders" i guess it's not too surprising.

a good laugh! 11/11/2009 8:21:12 AM
hahahahaha!
so funny!

jovi 11/11/2009 8:21:56 AM
@Sebnelo , There is no doubt , that JZ is our president. 100% fact.He is too 'young' a president to get an award like this. Do you not agree ? How about awarding a new father of a 7 month old baby , BEST FATHER AWARD ?! We are not debating his intent, or judging his future before he has a chance to prove his mettle.Oh, and do not bring race into this - I am sure there a lot of South Africans , that are sceptical of his leadership succeses to date, given the above reasons and the fact that expectations are massive at this present time.Lets leave race out of all posts to this column - it just ruins the value of the debate, and also creates the impression , that if you voice an opinion against JZ , you must be a certain colour , and that opinion is invalid/wrong.It also give oxygen to racists to survive another day.
Against a backdrop of the fallout of the Mbeki era , he is doing damage control, which is distracting him from dealing solidly with moving our country forward. His team is letting him down in many areas at the moment, which needs to be dealt with by JZ.

Jude 11/11/2009 8:23:01 AM
Mediocrity is excellence to the mediocre ...

AA 11/11/2009 8:23:48 AM
How hard was it for JZ to get that award (amongst the dictators of this continent)? It's like going to a jail and giving the person with the smallest crime an award while there are millions of honest people outside of jail who haven't ever committed a crime. What a farce.

Nari 11/11/2009 8:26:05 AM
Well done my President, keep up the good work, u deserve it

Doco 11/11/2009 8:27:00 AM

@Sbonelo. Im all for democracy and all that. But wake up and smell the coffee china, Apartheid ended 15 years ago. I think its time to move on now! But then what will you and the ANC comrades blame your problems on then!?!

Greg 11/11/2009 8:28:54 AM
Well done JZ. I like this guy. Find him a lot more open and democratic to Thabo. Good job so far. Keep it up

Digger 11/11/2009 8:30:11 AM
I think adrian said it all

@Richard 11/11/2009 8:30:17 AM
The SABC have been in a terrible way for years. Eskom's problems were born of the fact that poor planning and maintenance has taken place over the last decade and a half. Service delivery riots are a common thing these days, dont you think this is a result of empty promises from Government over the last decade and a half perhaps? Come on Richard , get real! If you are going to make a comment, just think before you open your trap!

AJ 11/11/2009 8:30:17 AM
'Prestigious' award? Hardly...given the context. As far as his performance as president goes, he seems lame-duck, none of his words seem to be translated into action. However to be fair African people are only interested in words not actions, so from that perspective it may be justified. If I were SA president at the moment I would be too embarrassed to accept any award, given the state of our country. I think it comes down to self-pride, why would I accept something I know to be false.

Concerned Citizen 11/11/2009 8:31:44 AM
I think on paper, the ideas and intentions of Jacob Zuma are noteworthy and definitely would deserve the praise if they were actually carried out. It is one thing to stand up in fornt of the people and scream freedom, equality and social mobility but it is another thing to actually carry out what you preach. In 7 months I have seen very little progress on all of his promises and in fact I would say that in many instances we've gone backwards. We are now killing innocent children, destroying the infrastructure of South Africa by messing with the boards of the 3 top govt organisations, there's been an increase in job loss, there's been an increase in the murder rate, the money budgeted for housing is buying multiple R1.1 million cars, the education in the country is being affected by striking teachers, students are stabbig and killing one another.... the list is exhaustive - Please someone let me know what he has actually done - not promised to do (very different things!!!)

LAS 11/11/2009 8:33:19 AM
I have learned a lesson, don't jump the gun. I will comment once i have fact with me, the cateria used to select the candidates.

Richard - Well said (7:52:52)

Tessa(the real one) : I shall be the first to withdraw my prejudice if alegations of corruption is disproved in an INDEPENDANT inquiry. No independant public protector or equivalent structures thus no means to identify criminal acts any more... except maybe opposition's requests for investigations, but also this venue is becoming tiresome.

Trev 11/11/2009 8:36:19 AM
It's got to be a joke.

Harold Jansen 11/11/2009 8:37:26 AM
Thank goodness for a clearcut political environment in SA:

Mbeki = Bad
Zuma = Good...

@ Tessa (da reel wun) 11/11/2009 8:37:39 AM
Corruption is all about making problems dissapear,It wasnt difficult for the ANC to sweep all "Zoo"ma's problems under the rug because thats what good comrades do :D. Have a nice day, after all I'm sure you will because apparently ignorance is bliss! hahaha

The real JZ 11/11/2009 8:37:55 AM
Never in the history of our country have we had a more hard working president. As long as the constitition and policies remain intact, this country can only go from strenghth to strenghth. However the challenges of turning arround aparthied are far less than turning arround the damage that has been done over the last 15 years through poor governance. JZ is the right man for the job!

Sbnonelo 11/11/2009 8:38:03 AM
Yo, there are some jealous peanuts on this site. Why not just congratulate our president instead of looking for fault.
Why are certain people in SA so dam negative, they will find a problem with everything and then tell you they are realists. HAHAHA, what nonsense! Certain people forget that all was not rosy and well under apartheid. Although im sure they were much happier, I know I would be if all ny "enemies" were kept away from me.
Its time for you people to be positive, what good is doing to sit here all day and complain about matters you have little knowledge of?

TNC 11/11/2009 8:38:10 AM
@Jacques Viljoen - We can only wait for your generation to go extinct before we can see any racial harmony...This award is not about RACE

INDEED 11/11/2009 8:39:44 AM
This just shows the intelect level that comparisons are made....If Zuma made it to the top against all others...well this is Africa and we must realize that we can not expect any other way...Well done Pres.Zuma, you are acon artist and have managed to pull the wool of your judges...

Phyllis Smith 11/11/2009 8:40:01 AM
Congratulations to our president. He has a really good attitude and if he puts into practise what he says, he could be as good as Obama, and our country will prosper. You have a difficult task and I hope for all of us you succeed

Viva Zuma 11/11/2009 8:41:24 AM
Most whites will never accept Prez Zuma. Those you complain about service delivery etc, must understand that things were good in the 'PAST' only cause there was such a small number of people to serve, so it will obviously take time, and there has definately been improvement in the past 15 years.

another day 11/11/2009 8:43:20 AM
I agree that if JZ is the best Africa has to offer, it is no wonder there is Afro pessimism. This award is to recognise achievement, but all he has achieved so far is to become president against all odds, with the help of the likes of Julius.

Teri Maaki 11/11/2009 8:45:28 AM
Jacob is a leader! Who else do you know that has been a herd boy and is now president of a country? Jacob, dont let jealous peoples rob you of your glory! Well done, those bigots at the union buildings dont know what hit them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jaydee 11/11/2009 8:46:03 AM
I have a hopefull gut instinct that Zuma is biding his time as his cabinet settles. The 100 days of poll opinions have past and not a great deal has been achieved. However, Zuma, i think will take the necessary steps to strengthen the gaps and weedle out the detrimental influences within the party. At any rate he has no option. The global business community is watching this country very very closely. This award has been given to easily and too was the Noble peace prize to Obama. Zuma needs to have been of service longer in his seat as president. Just seven months doesn't swing it really. Awards of this nature could simply be appeasement of the masses.

Simon 11/11/2009 8:55:39 AM
Well done Mr Zuma. I think you have done a great job so far.

kelvin 11/11/2009 9:12:25 AM

Wayne 11/11/2009 9:12:50 AM
No doubt we are gonna hear from all the negative detractors out there, who can never see the good in the man or recognise the facts. he is definitely the hardest working, most hands on president we have ever had. The legacy he has inherited from the former cabinet makes it a bloody hard and difficult post to immediately shine in. Eskom was in trouble years ago, service delivery is not changed in few months, etc, etc. He acknowledges these areas of weakness in the government and seems to be putting in a big effort to turn them around. I dig him....Keep it up President Zuma

Proud South African 11/11/2009 11:29:25 AM
I read these news articles everyday, and obviously, the comments that follow. i'm a South African of indian ancestory. i love South Africa but i am digusted by the people who say that this country is as bad as Zimbabwe, i am digusted by the racists (both black and white). i honestly believe that there is no hope for SA, for the simple reason that as human beings (black, white, whatever) we are not willing to change. everyone believes that there is an agenda against them. that crime is specific and that white people are targeted. to believe that is pure insanity. or perhaps you need to expand your social circles to include people not of your race - just to hear their stories of crime. Apartheid infected SA for generations and it's going to take generations to repair that damage! People say that the world needs to know what's going on here in SA. i say to them they need to know that the world has more interactions with SA now then ever before. or perhaps people want to reinstate Apartheid, let's do that and have the world impose sanctions on us, let's demarcate certain small areas to the majority of the people and give the more developed areas to the minority. i'm sure in your heads that makes perfect sense. NO! i would not have been afforded the opportunities that i have been afforded under the Apartheid government and i most certainly want my children and your children to live in a world were race is nothing but a celebration of our differences. when i look at a person i see a human being looking back at me.

Sgepie 11/11/2009 11:32:05 AM
Isn't it interesting that on a day when Allister Sparks wrote an article on the Business Day calling on the President to step up and take leadership, we read that a "JHB based" group has awarded him the title "Best African President"? Really. What has he done? Its a pity icons like Kenneth Kaunda are being usedin the propagandist agenda to rewrite history and project Zuma for what he is not. Who is really pulling the strings here? What influence does the current ANC leadership (who have made it its mission to rewrite history by elevating Zuma to the status of Mandela and hoping that this undermines Mbeki)on this group? who are the judges behind the award and what criteria did they use? Lastly, who was in the running and did all African Heads of State stand an equal chance of getting the award. C'mon SA, we are not that stupid...

Bonny 11/11/2009 11:49:01 AM
Good Lord..what a joke. What exactly has he done in the past few months. Had this been an award for bankrupting the country or pulling the wool over people's eyes, then definitely he should have won.
