Name change battle goes to court

Pretoria - The Freedom Front Plus will on Monday file an application in the Pretoria High Court to stop the proposed changes of 27 Pretoria street names.
In a statement, FF Plus spokesperson in the greater Pretoria area, Willie Spies said the party had decided to approach the court for a declaratory order to stop the Tshwane metro council from changing the names.
"The Tshwane metro council has contravened at least three laws in pursuing these name changes," said Spies.
These were the Municipal Systems Act, Municipal Finance Management Act and the National Heritage Resources Act.
The party would also ask the court for an interdict preventing the implementation of the council's decision until public participation in the process was complete, as announced by the Minister of Arts and Culture Pallo Jordan in November last year.
Two civil society organisations, AfriForum and the federation of Afrikaans Cultural Associations, would join the FF Plus as applicants.
"The FF Plus welcomes this development as its underlines the broad support for co-operation between various role players in our society, which tolerates our rich and diverse heritage," said Spies.
Comment from the city council could not immediately be obtained.
