Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki has appointed Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula as a facilitator for the Burundi peace process.
On Sunday, the department of foreign affairs said South Africa stood ready to serve the people of Burundi, in particular, and the East African region in general, in the mediation process.
Nqakula will travel to Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi to consult with all role players.
A department statement read: "In this context, it is envisaged that the regional technical team will be established to provide the requisite support to the facilitator."
Ambassador Kingsley Mamabolo, SA special envoy to the Great Lakes region, will support Nqakula.
