Cape Town - ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe is expected to be elected as South Africa's new president on Thursday.
Members of the National Assembly will meet in the chamber at 11:00 to initiate the proceedings.
The new president is expected to be inducted on Thursday, and will also announce the names of the new deputy president and Cabinet ministers.
On Wednesday evening, the GCIS announced that Thabo Mbeki's tenure expired at midnight.
Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri is acting president on Thursday until the new president has been sworn in.
This follows Mbeki's resignation on Sunday after being recalled by the African National Congress (ANC) on Saturday.
