Johannesburg - The African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party should hold joint peace rallies in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC said on Thursday.
"The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is reiterating its call to the IFP for both parties to send their leaders to preach peace jointly to the grassroots structures of both organisations in the province," ANC provincial spokesperson, Mtholephi Mthimkhulu, said in a statement.
"This approach is even more necessary during the present build up to the forthcoming general elections on April 14," he said.
Mthimkhulu was repeating a call made by the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal chairman, S'bu Ndebele, during a debate on SABC 3 Interface Programme on Thursday night.
He was on a panel discussion with among others the IFP's Musa Zondi and Democratic Alliance's Roger Burrows.
Ndebele said people living in the province "were receptive to political tensions".
He was, however, optimistic that the ANC and IFP could bring lasting peace to the region. "The ANC is ready to go to various areas with the IFP to tell the people that war is over, everybody or every party is free to campaign any where unhindered," he said.
