Malatsi abandons court bid

Cape Town - Former social services deputy minister David Malatsi has abandoned his bid to force the New National Party to give him a seat in parliament.
In terms of a settlement made an order of the Cape High Court on Thursday, the NNP has agreed to fill its existing vacancy in the National Assembly by June 30. However, the order does not specify who should have the seat. Malatsi is to pay the NNP's legal costs.
He had claimed the party had promised him the seat if he resigned as deputy minister in June this year.
However, since then he has been suspended from the party and faces disciplinary charges related to the Roodefontein funding furore.
Malatsi is out on R10 000 bail after appearing on corruption charges also related to Roodefontein.
It is unlikely that the NNP will consider him for the seat in parliament.
