Disturbing trend in ANC - Niehaus

2008-09-08 12:42

Cape Town - There is a disturbing trend in the African National Congress of confusing patriotism with party loyalty, according to former African National Congress MP Carl Niehaus.

Writing in the Cape Times on Monday, he said the greatest danger for the ANC came not from any other political party, but from "mixing up" issues of party loyalty and discipline, with patriotism.

This resulted in an expectation that the party line and leadership should be followed blindly, and that the judicial and democratic institutions of the state should merely be instruments to carry out ANC policy.

"There are disturbing trends in this direction, and if it continues, this more than anything else will become the undoing of this great people's movement," he said.

It might seem from the high seats of power that the people would always vote for the ANC, but there was no given "eternity", and people were not voting fodder.

Self-enrichment

Political office was no longer seen in the party as a place from which to serve, but as a platform to launch personal ambition and for self-enrichment.

"Those who squander the ANC's liberation dividend in this way must not think that no damage is done," he said.

The damage might not be visible in next year's election results, but history offered precedents for a slow process of erosion, followed by a devastating collapse.

Niehaus, a former political prisoner, is now executive director of a Johannesburg-based consulting and investment company.

Only time will tell if the traditional ANC base will ever change their vote; however I have already noticed a number of this base already picking up on the pre-election trends of veiled service delivery implementation and RDP house allocation and are not impressed the ANC thinks they are too stupid to notice.

My concern with Carl Niehaus and Zaphiro is that in fact they are both spot on. Of course the ANC fat Cats are mostly all in denial and cannot handle an honest challenge. ANC is not better than where we were and have not broken the cycle. All they have done is changed the direction of rotation. A great opportunity forgone and that all in having forgotten where they came from. Catch a serious wake up!!

No way! Who could have seen that coming? (the ANC behaving like every other African political party). Just wait until they actually have real competition during elections. Then we'll also have to do the Zimkenya African Democracy Shuffle. Are we prophets or racists?

Agree. Blind faith regardless of the consequences is not democracy. The ANC are happy to keep the masses ignorant thereby ensuring an unwavering following that do not question their moral, political and economic blunderings.

These people are voting fodder. They're no more liberated in thought than they were in deed 30 years ago. Their only consolation is they dont realise it.

I could have told you that before you went to prison as a terrorist. I could tell you even more but I don?t negotiate with communists.
