Johannesburg - Security will be increased around the venues where the Congress of the People (Cope) and the ANC will hold political events in Durban on the weekend.
This is to prevent possible clashes between members of the two parties, police said.
The ruling party will hold its one-day provincial list conference at DLI Hall on Friday while Cope is planning a rally in Durban's Umlazi township on Saturday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said on Wednesday that security plans had been developed.
"We have organised sufficient police officers to ensure that there is stability. They will be stationed at both venues.
"Over and above the deployment, we have also set up mechanisms which will give us early warnings about possible clashes," said Mdunge.
