ANC wins 6 of 9 by-elections

Johannesburg - The ANC has won six of nine municipal by-elections, while the Democratic Alliance won the remaining three, the Independent Electoral Commission said on Thursday.
The by-election was held on Wednesday, in the Eastern Cape, the Free State and Gauteng, the electoral body said in a statement.
The ANC and the DA retained their seats in the Eastern Cape. The ANC retained two seats in the Free State and won three while the DA retained one ward in the Free State, according to a comparative table with the results of the 2006 municipal election.
The DA retained its ward in Gauteng by a larger majority.
The IEC said voter turnout for the polls ranged between 17.84% and 49.74%.
