Immigration Act becomes law
2003-04-07 23:50
Cape Town - The new Immigration Act and its regulations, which last month were declared invalid by the Cape High Court, came into force at 18:00 on Monday.
This followed the signing by Home Affairs Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi of notice of his intention to seek leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the High Court's decision.
The High Court on Monday night also rejected a last minute bid by lawyers acting for specialist immigration lawyer Gary Eisenberg, who brought the original challenge, to block the regulations from coming into force.
