Zapiro: I thought carefully

2008-09-08 21:30

Cape Town - Cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro on Monday defended his controversial cartoon of Jacob Zuma preparing to rape justice, saying he thought "very, very carefully" before doing it.

The African National Congress and its tripartite alliance partners have condemned the cartoon as disgusting, while ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe labelled it racist.

The cartoon, published in the Sunday Times under Shapiro's pen-name, Zapiro, shows a blindfolded female figure labelled "justice system", being pinned down by Zuma's political allies.

The ANC president is depicted in the cartoon unzipping his pants, while Mantashe urges him: "Go for it, boss!"

Shapiro said he "absolutely" refuted the racism charge, and that his record in the struggle years spoke for itself.

"There is a very, very pronounced tendency in this country towards exceptionalism, as if our politicians are more sacrosanct than politicians worldwide. That I take issue with," he said.

"I really feel strongly that they have to take a hard look at what they are doing and not use the red herring of racism."

He said he was not surprised that the cartoon had provoked strong reaction, as the image was "outrageous", and a "very explosive thing".

Asked females friends' opinions

He had thought "very, very carefully" about how women would view it, and before publication sent it to several women friends whose opinion he trusted. Their immediate reaction was one of shock.

However they all then said that the cartoon not only showed graphically what was actually happening to the justice system and constitutional principles, but that it contained a second level of criticism on violence against women in a very patriarchal society.

Shapiro said the blindfolded figure of justice was an allegorical figure going back centuries.

"The fact that Jacob Zuma has this personal history is his problem," he said.

Zuma, who is president of the ANC, was charged with raping a young woman in 2006, but was found not guilty.

Earlier on Monday the ANC, its youth league and the SA Communist Party said in a joint statement that the cartoon was distasteful and "borders on defamation of character".

The organisations said the Sunday Times had disguised abuse as press freedom in publishing it.

Subliminal suggestions

In his blog Constitutionally Speaking, University of the Western Cape constitutional law academic Prof Pierre de Vos said on Monday that though he had always been a great fan of Zapiro, he wondered whether the cartoonist had now gone too far and done something "immoral and ethically deeply problematic".

He said he agreed with Zapiro that some of the leaders who had been championing Zuma's cause had acted despicably, and that Zuma, through his silence, had abetted them.

However he wondered whether by using the metaphor of rape, Zapiro was not "cheapening" the horror of the act and helping to desensitise people.

De Vos also asked whether Shapiro was undermining respect for the judiciary he was purportedly defending, by suggesting subliminally that Zuma should have been convicted in the rape trial.

His piece drew a flood of comments from his readers, most of them disagreeing with him.

"It is time someone drew attention to the shocking behaviour of these political figureheads and their most avid supporters," wrote Thea Beckman.

"We cannot allow a man who believes loyalty to be above the Constitution to take the reins of our country. Well done Zapiro."

Comrades, I will kill to keep Zapiro in print

Neil 9/8/2008 11:13:33 PM
I think its great that he has illustrated a cartoon that shows the reality of South Africa's current situation.South Africa has become a joke due to these useless figures who have no clue of running a country.Bribery and corruption is destroying South Africa

Luigi Lupini 9/8/2008 11:17:11 PM
The cartoon graphically illustrates what many of us are feeling - that our political elite see themselves above the law, at every level. Not just Zuma, but any number of so-called "leaders" could have been portrayed in the cartoon, including Mbeki himself. Although the cartoon portrays male on female rape, the system is being raped by just as many female members of the "elite".

David 9/8/2008 11:21:13 PM
I think this cartoon very clearly demonstrates that the ANC thinks it is above justice and rules because of "divine right". The current leader of the ANC are not fit to rule in democratic South Africa. They might have been the right people during "the struggle", but are not fit to run SA.

JayB 9/8/2008 11:21:32 PM
Well, I'm not sure that I agree with the way, although it has been very effective, it's been said. But is it not our right to express our opinions and if we take away Shapiro's right to freedom of speech then we may very well next take away all our rights. Do not be fooled this is a slippery slide to censorship (like the Apartheid Government). The ANC, ANCYL, COSATU and SACP do not have the right to censor anyone; they may disagree and even think it distasteful! But that is their freedom...

JayB 9/8/2008 11:28:53 PM
When a right or freedoms of a person is taken away then be sure that it is a short journey before it is acceptable to take more rights and freedoms away from more and more people who disagree. This will continue until no one has any rights or freedoms accept those who can afford it, the rich or the politically well connected. We should all fight for the right of people to have their say, even if we don't like what they say, because tomorrow we may be the ones who are censored...

Appreciative 9/8/2008 11:30:30 PM
...if this cartoon depicts Zuma and his cronies. The fact is that we should learn to laugh at ourselves. Its the same people in the picture who always mouth off without fail, now that something funny is made about them, they cry foul. Was it not Malema who referred to the Constitutional Court as a Kangaroo Court? Bite the bullet and move on....

JayB 9/8/2008 11:37:33 PM
So let Shapiro have his say and hope that he doesn't ever get censored because if he does get censored, then we are all in deep trouble. His message was blunt but very effective in causing debate. Unfortunately Shapiro, satire is only affective with people who have some form of savvy, common sense or insight. In this case race has nothing to do with it. It?s about justice and freedom of speech. Peace.

NdP 9/8/2008 11:40:30 PM
Touchy -touchy! Well done Zapiro.

MPHULA NAPO 9/9/2008 7:32:57 AM
I THINK HE DID NOT APPLIED HIS BRAINS CAREFULLY, THE IDEA WAS THERE BUT THE MANNER IN HE PUT IT , IT WAS UNCALLED FOR AND I CAN SAY IT WAS ABSURD AND DRAB

Troger 9/9/2008 7:36:14 AM
No Zapiro went too far, we can't call this democratie as its cartoon is distorting the facts, i can assure you that in USA he will not get away with it.he zapiro said he taught carefully about it, but i am not sure of that.Cartoons are meant to depict the truth not distort them.Zuma never been a rapist;i always support cartoons from zapiro but he should be able to draw the line between what has happened and what he has behind his head.it's wrong.

Anon 9/9/2008 7:38:13 AM
Zapiro have better think again. You can never influenc people to change in such a despicable manner. Shame on you Zapiro I now doubt your IQ.

Anonymous 9/9/2008 7:44:07 AM
I have always been a fan of Zapiro's humour but it is my honest opinion that he is now personalising this Zuma issue and this time he has gone a bit too far.

Mzo 9/9/2008 7:45:06 AM
And we say no perpetuation of woman abuse on our lovely SA. Maybe yes, the idea was good. Bt did it really warrant the use of rape and a woman?

Angela 9/9/2008 7:47:11 AM
Zapiro has the courage to draw it like it is, and I admire him for that. Zuma's supporters say they will kill if he goes to court. Adding insult to injury the citizen taxpayers are having to pay his legal fees ?!

siya 9/9/2008 7:47:49 AM
The truth hurts! I could not have drawn it better myself.. Thumbs up Zapiro.

Robert 9/9/2008 7:50:51 AM
Freedom is pretty much a myth. There will always be those that are more equal than others. That said I think the cartoon pretty much depicts what everyone thinks. Nice illustration! I however would never have heard of it until the outcry as I never read the papers. Funny how in the attempt to have it hidden it's gotten more coverage than imagined. Ironic or simply fitting?

KP 9/9/2008 7:51:20 AM
It was only a matter of time before someone like Zapiro actually did something about these so called leaders, I still find it hard to believe that JZ could be the countries next president. Who's next JZ?

middle class 9/9/2008 7:51:32 AM
I read with horror the interpretation of the cartoon, by the 'well educated'. The use of terms will definately confuse most of the population of this country and mostly our children. Can we get the younger generation to interpret the cartoon. That is the message being sent out...NOT the intrepretation of the journalist and those that have degrees in studying cartoons. I see 'gang rape' and it it targeted towards a woman, shame on us for supporting Shapiro.

Zola 9/9/2008 7:51:51 AM
Love it!!! The ANC, must have had a reality shock when they saw it! This was spot on:)

Baloyi Famanda Samuel 9/9/2008 7:58:28 AM
The constitution is above all of us even the anc,if the alliance is ready to support a kill by malima, people like zapiro are read to defend the constitution through a pen.well done zapiro.

Monique 9/9/2008 7:58:41 AM
Indeed, it is shocking at first, but oh so true!

Mzayksman 9/9/2008 7:59:30 AM
What is wrong with this cartoon? it is a fact that the ANC think that they are above the law. i think it is good that they have been given a reminder of what they are doing. the ANC have proven that they have no respect for the Judiciary, examples are yengeni Case & others. Well Done Zapiro!!!

Azwi 9/9/2008 7:59:42 AM
This is the best way of indicating what is really happening with the Zuma trial. You have the ANCYL saying that if Zuma is convicted, there will be killings and he will be president from prison. Cosatu stating that he should not be prosecuted as it will incite violence. If Zuma us quickly, he should face the justice system and accept the consequences. but so far he and his followers are trying to rape it, by making sure that he does not get prosecuted. well done Zapiro!!

Franky Knuckles 9/9/2008 8:00:43 AM
Well done Comrade Zapiro! Your cartoon has done exactly what it is suppose to do, start debate. Face it people, this is what is currently happening in our country. It realy struck me as ironic that the very people that come with "Kill for Zuma", are so defensive and protective about themselves when it comes to someone having a go at them.

MvM 9/9/2008 8:01:08 AM
Sometimes the role of cartoons is underestimated, but when it's delivered with such style, it hits home. Zapiro, you are a genius. Keep up the good work. If something needs to be said, say it, even if you are labelled a "racist". Is it not a pity that as soon as a SA politician finds himself out of his intellectual depth, he calls "racist"?

crusher 9/9/2008 8:02:07 AM
To all the ANC lackeys ... the truth hurts, doesn't it? To criticise Zapiro for depicting the truth demonstrates the rapidly declining norms of what a democracy is supposed to be.

envirokid 9/9/2008 8:02:44 AM
It is something on the minds of many South Africans. I have no respect left whatsoever for the ANC and their cronies. We are not far off from a Zimbabwe...

Rihan 9/9/2008 8:03:34 AM
Shapiro has always hit the nail squarely on the head.Well done Shapiro!!

Ali 9/9/2008 8:03:48 AM
The reason these Alliance leaders are complaining, is because, deep down they know Zapiro has hit the nail on the head. Human nature is such that when there is a truth we don't want to face about ourselves, we often will vehemently criticize the source that is rubbing the truth in our face. Granted, Zapiro may have done this in a very crude manner, but bottom line, every inference he makes in the cartoon is 100% the truth!

CyoN 9/9/2008 8:05:01 AM
We need more people of Zapiro's caliber - ppl willing to tell em off the way they should be...

Shangy D 9/9/2008 8:05:29 AM
Freedom of expression is the solution to current drama, our constitution placed nobody above the law and every suspect deserve to be prosicuted, irrespective of status or profile.keep up the good work Shapiro.

Warick Winter 9/9/2008 8:06:09 AM
Well done Zapiro They say a picture can say a thousand words and I think your cartoon has hit the nail on the head. The only reason I believe the ANC has taken offence to your cartoon is because there is a element of truth in it. Keep the Cartoons coming Warick

JoeSoape 9/9/2008 8:06:40 AM
Newton's second law states that for every action there will be an equal and opposite reaction. Judging by the veracity of the recation, Zapiro has hit the nail very squarely on the (showered) head.

Estelle 9/9/2008 8:07:27 AM
Probably the best portrayal of how most of us feel..

JC 9/9/2008 8:08:39 AM
Why is it that the myopic sheep out there will always play the race card? The ANC and its cronies forget that Zapiro has always been one of the most vehement supporters of true democracy and was a continual thorn in the side of the NP. They are just uncomfortable because it hits the mark.

Janette 9/9/2008 8:09:07 AM
Zuma and his cronies have allowed this cartoon due to their own behaviour, if the hat fits wear it Zuma. Change your arrogant attitude and views and then maybe the people of south Africa will start having some faith in this country. Both my sons will be leaving shortly and become part of the brain drain............Well done Shapiro

Martin Jooste 9/9/2008 8:09:41 AM
The truth hurts, doesn't it? This is part of the problem in SA. Only certain people are allowed to say and do what they want. Well done Zapiro! MJ

Estelle 9/9/2008 8:10:13 AM
Probably the best portrayal of how most of us feel..

Katlego 9/9/2008 8:12:00 AM
These ANC people are denting our image as black people. Why is it ok to make fun to leaders of other countries while it is racism when it is done to stupid South African politicians? I am black and I love the cartoon, the truth really does hurt those who don't want to see it! Well done Mr Shapiro

Mbuzi 9/9/2008 8:12:18 AM
Zapiro. I wonder whats Malema will say next.

freedom of expression 9/9/2008 8:12:21 AM
I must say well done zapiro on this nice drawing that does say something about our country, you were very thoughtful at this and good as well. well done

Niren 9/9/2008 8:12:24 AM
I believe this to be a conversation at many gatherings, it's so sad to see how the ANC controls the law and are bent on removing any objects that stands in its way (Scorpions)to suck the country and line their pockets. I grew up believing in the struggle even joined a youth league because i believed, just the thought that JZ will be president gives me shivers as to what kind of country we will be living in, another Nigeria corrupt to the core.

Hayley 9/9/2008 8:12:55 AM
I think this cartoon is brilliant!! It not only addresses the issue of corruption, but also our government's inability to see just how corrupt they acctually are, and by calling it racist... that's the easy way out of everything these days, isn't it? Zapiro has the guts to say what most of us are thinking! I applaud him for that!! Well done! You are one brave man!!

Colin 9/9/2008 8:13:22 AM
Well Done Zapiro! This has nothing to do with race. The abuse of the justice system is an afront to all South Africans, irrispective of race or sex.

jfky 9/9/2008 8:13:57 AM
Maybe this picture sends the real message of how sick our society had became. It's hard on the eye, but POLITICAL true.

WB 9/9/2008 8:15:28 AM
It's so funny. When lies are told, the cabinets are quiet...but let the truth be spoken, then spears are in the air and war cries can be heard trough all levels of media. And yes, race has nothing to do with it. Justice must be served and noone should be above the law.

LH 9/9/2008 8:16:15 AM
Finally an honest view to the situation with respects to Jacob Zuma and the state of the justice system .... One rule for all!

Roya 9/9/2008 8:16:33 AM
Well done, Zapiro. Your cartoon correctly depicts their attitude. ANC, SACP & ANCYL say you have insulted "their collective intergrity". Don they have any?

Ronnie 9/9/2008 8:16:38 AM
TRUTH hurts...especially if that TRUTH is REAL and unacceptable. The cartoon depicts TRUTHFULLY, the state of SA politics. In fact Hlophe should also have been included in this cartoon...Well done Zapiro...

STALLION 9/9/2008 8:16:41 AM
Zapiro brought his message home in a very effective way. Raping of females as well as our legal system are equally unacceptable. I trust that Zapiro might have opened the eyes of many regarding what is actually currently happening in our country : A severe threat to our justice system ! ! !

GP 9/9/2008 8:17:17 AM
This cartoon speaks a thousand words, and the only reason those morons are being so defensive, is cos it is so true. Well done Zapiro! Funny... whenever it is against our "democratic" black Govt, it is racist :-)lol... Amandla Freedom of speech, Amandla...

Senseless 9/9/2008 8:17:20 AM
Where has our sense of humour gone, have we forgotten the point here, I agree with Appreciative, the only way this country is going to move in any positive direction is if we can learn to laugh at ourselves and stop acting like spoilt kids. Zapiro you rock man, never say sorry, you are one of only a handful actually facing real problems head on. remember political cartoons are meant to stir these feelings, that's why they are there.

Natalie 9/9/2008 8:17:38 AM
Zapiro did exactly the same thing when the Apartheid government was ruling, why now when he's doing it to them, do they have a problem with it.....Just goes to show, that it doesn't matter what colour you are, when you have power, things get ugly. Apartheid in reverse is what we're going through!

nhs 9/9/2008 8:18:37 AM
Illustrating reality is not racist, its time this country and its leaders open their eyes and start facing the reality and do what they can to correct this idea many people in this country have of our leaders, Zapiro just had the talent to express it, which is a much more peaceful, intelligent, civilised way than rioting the streets.

Hubert 9/9/2008 8:18:51 AM
if only we had another madiba, one in a billion he is, an honest politician, right to the end, jz on da other hand is da epitomy of a crooked leader, the truth hurts, thats why this cartoon is like an arrow to a corrupt politicians heart, well done zapiro, you one courageous dude, on with the show we go, sigh

Jo 9/9/2008 8:19:01 AM
I must admit, I was pretty shocked when I saw the cartoon in the Sunday Times. I don't think it's funny, but I must admit it puts a strong message across and portrays what most of us are already feeling. Well Done Zapiro!

AH 9/9/2008 8:21:01 AM
I think your cartoon is excellent and forces us to stop burying our heads in the sand, bringing up many other varied issues, and as a woman, I did not find it offensive at all. Perhaps people found it offensive because it forces them to face the fears we have to endure on an everyday basis, one of the worst being - rape. Also, that racist card is getting so stale. What is happening in our beautiful country is so unfair to the people who love it so much. Carry on with the good work.

Lisa 9/9/2008 8:22:33 AM
People are now analysing the cartoon far too much - and missing the actual point he was trying to make!

Iceberg 9/9/2008 8:22:47 AM
once again. As he has done now for many years, he nailed the situation on its head, showing these leaders for what they really are.

Chris 9/9/2008 8:23:01 AM
Despite what JZ and his cronies would like us to believe, they are not the voice of the masses. Zapiro expressed what the real majority are thinking. It was far less shocking than "kill for Zuma" and yet far more effective. Well done Zapiro, you've really summed it up nicely and given us a voice.

GT 9/9/2008 8:23:24 AM
Brilliant! excellent! well done Shapiro! he put into a cartoon what we are all feeling!

Bheki 9/9/2008 8:24:03 AM
Leaves the reader a lot to think about. However intepretation is key in such matters. What Zapiro has done is table a issue that is on many people's minds. Debate is good.

Jenni 9/9/2008 8:24:05 AM
What's that old adage - many a true word spoken in jest - Zapiro was simply telling the truth. ANC, ANCYL, COSATU and SACP know Zuma is guilty of corruption - hence their efforts to keep him out of court - would they be fighting so hard if he was innocent??
