Mbeki agrees to step down

2008-09-20 15:41

Johannesburg - South African President Thabo Mbeki accepts a call from the governing African National Congress to stand down, his spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said on Saturday.

"The president has accepted the decision of the ANC's national executive council," he said on 702 Talk Radio in Johannesburg, which reported that Mbeki is convening a special government meeting for Sunday to decide the way forward.

Mbeki, 66, who succeeded Nelson Mandela as president in June 1999, has been under fire over allegations that he was influential in pressing corruption charges against ANC leader Jacob Zuma.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the decision to recall President Thabo Mbeki from office was "as an effort to heal and unite the ANC".

"The ANC has decided to recall the president of the republic before his term of office expires. Our decision has been communicated to him," said Mantashe who was addressing the media at the Esselen Park conference centre in Kempton Park on the East Rand. - Sapa

The ride is not over... I think Pres Mbeki has had probably one of the most difficult Presidencies to run. Come under fire for many things but I'm saying put yourself in that position then we'd have a different conversation. All I hope for is a better life for all South Africans regardless of race, lifestyle or money. Turn over the page

EM 9/20/2008 4:03:14 PM
This proving that the ANC do not care about the wellbeing of the people of South Africa. We have to elect the president of the country. I think it is inappropriate for T-BOSS to step down since his term is not over. I am a black person and very disapointed with this kind of behaviour within the ruling party. If JZ want to rule now then he has a hidden agenda for us. What a shame of our democracy.

veeman 9/20/2008 4:04:32 PM
was "as an effort to heal and unite the ANC .By this utterance , is Mantashe telling us that the anc would have split if Mbeki was not removed . Malema made it clear that Mbeki must go . Youth league was instrumental in putting Zuma at the helm in Polokwane .Firing Mbeki is possibly payback time for them now . I wonder how many other demands , Malema is going to make to the NEC . This whole thing does not bode well for the future of our country .

Mo 9/20/2008 4:05:23 PM
Here we go... to all the doomsayers and, equally, to those who are overly optimistic about a post-Mbeki government, it's about to happen. Self-serving, "barbaric" or "necessity" should be concerns we have for the next 10 minutes or so because what follows this decision is what is really important.

Steven 9/20/2008 4:14:21 PM
I think Mbeki did the right thing if he choses to step down, because he kept quiet so long about Zuma's case.

Shaun 9/20/2008 4:20:07 PM
Following the same route of every other african country in turmoil, they finally get power to run the nation, and then they have no more white man to fight so they fight amoungst themselves... get out while you can.

nolo 9/20/2008 4:29:08 PM
I believe that world wide leaders salute a legacy that is Mbeki, a man who led not only South Africa but Africa as well. What follows now is a self serving government with less regard for its people and the democracy that they claim to have laid down thier lifes.

Objective 9/20/2008 4:30:18 PM
All things being equal - Mbeki was the lesser of two evils. With Zuma comes a move to the far left.... and all that goes with that

Benzo 9/20/2008 4:31:48 PM
The African National Circus continues after the curtain call of TM. Interesting times to be had by all. The only thing to happen is that the NPA takes Zuma on again.

Chris 9/20/2008 4:32:54 PM
Well, there goes democracy...

paully 9/20/2008 4:37:00 PM
few years back is only the poor south africa that cry out without any help, but now is time for the so-called the rich to cry.they now cry out to poor s\a for help.time change very fast.

Marius 9/20/2008 4:42:59 PM
Mbeki should form a new Political party. He still has a lot of support. What better way to break the ANC Stronghold and ensure that they become weaker! We need a strong opposition party, not the clowns at the DA. Let us all hope that Mbeki will consider this.

Not so pessimistic! 9/20/2008 4:47:38 PM
As I white I'm more hopeful of this situation than many . Mbeki troubled me -his friendship with Mugabe , his two nation address and his barely veiled racism was worrying but not as much as his dupicity -he is a dangerous snake ! On this Im with the ANC - he must go ! He will stop at nothing to retain power for himeslf and his cronies ! Hopefully the ANC will control Zuma just as well ! Actually this may just be African democacy .As long as SA keeps a leader answerable to the people -we are ok .

Margaret 9/20/2008 4:57:20 PM
The people of SA have to examine the true intentions of this decision by the ANC, and act once again in resistance to any form of injustice that does not serve our dream for a people's democracy. MSK

SJ 9/20/2008 5:00:24 PM
Finally sanity prevails...No need to contest the decision of the NEC. No one is above the ANC - not now, not ever. Those who think Mbeki is everything - and the most intelligent being over and above the ANC - should also follow...resign. From Ministers, Ambassadors, High Commissioners to the sweepers of the governmet office floors- let them also go now! South Africa will be better off without them!

disillusioned 9/20/2008 5:03:31 PM
The reality is that Thabo Mbeki and his supporters have no home in the ANC. The ANC they and their forefathers knew is no more. It is time for them to find a new home that will challenge the Zuma government. Our country is being taken over by these power hungry, aggrieved criminals. Be discerning, cast your vote for a stronger opposition. We are faced with a group of people who feel, that they too want to be fatcats. They are driven by greed and self-interest!

Francois 9/20/2008 5:04:41 PM
Kgalema Motlante will be next prez and not JZ.

Coapie 9/20/2008 5:07:43 PM
I fully agree with EM. We, the people must vote for the next President of South Africa, after all we are they ones that pay the taxes. Be it ANC / DA / ID /UDM. The constitution must change to allow South Africans to chose their own President of South Africa. I will vote in the next elections but the ANC will not get my vote.

Nick 9/20/2008 5:08:41 PM
I will miss Mbeki as a president who generally spoke for the country. There were very few "I's" and loads of "we's". This is unusual in Africa where most leaders speak for themselves and what they believe and want. A president should be the spokesperson for the people which I believe he generlly was. All I can hear coming out of Zuma's lips is I, I, I, I. The gravy train will soon have a new driver. Pity that 99% of government's efforts is put into the gravy train and only 1% into the Gautrain.

Ashamed to be South African 9/20/2008 5:12:01 PM
If the Deputy President wants to heal this country she must not resign. She will have the power to call for a judicial enquiry into this whole scandal that is affecting the man in the street, once she is State President.

Mase 9/20/2008 5:12:09 PM
Yes he was not perfect, but what's coming next scares me

Vukza 9/20/2008 5:13:27 PM
How much the ANC Spend in JZ's court Case, instead of making the lifes of people that voted for them better.

Ngoty 9/20/2008 5:13:55 PM
I regard mbeki as a great leader. His decision to step down is wise.Mbeki knows that jz cant run sa.

GeorgeA 9/20/2008 5:18:40 PM
The Cabal (Zuma, Mantashe, Nzimandi,Vavi and Malema) has won the day...and I'm vindicated for saying that Mbeki will go as Malema dictated. Despite vigourous denials that Malema speaks for the ANC. We now know that Malema wags the dog...don't we? Malema the great leader. Viva Julius Julius for acting president

Alain Munya 9/20/2008 5:21:56 PM
We are on the same track as most of africans countries, One day we may reach the level of Zimbabwe if anyone can just say, The president must go because he is a Youth League office bearer. This is pathetic as it signal the start of the slip of the ANC. It will be something most ANC cards carriers will remember all their life as the arrival of a strong Opposition party will be born from the slipt. The survival of DA,IFP etc will only take place if they join force as the slip is real

peter 9/20/2008 5:23:20 PM
i think the ANC's national executive council are some how confiused to force Mbeki to step down. if they do not know what or who to fight they must fight corruption and AIDs.if they think zuma is good to rule this country we will see how far he will go. i will not be suplise to see zuma being kicked out of the office the same way they did to Mbeki. i think Mbeki did all his best to keep peace in the country and continet as a whole. pe

ur future prez 9/20/2008 5:31:27 PM
Mbeki showed great diplomatic qualities in Zim, he got,SOuth AFrica on the the Global map, he is praised throughout the whole wide world, he got South Africa to be a member of the G8 + 5.... and this is how they thank him? What a shame Not only is he leavin, bt so will will the deputy president and other ministers... cabinet exocdus = government collapse...! trully a sad day in history...

Brian 9/20/2008 5:37:58 PM
Totally irrsponsible! Destitute the president of South Africa, on what grounds? For what? There's nothing against Thabo Mbeki, only rumors! Very dangerous. & this less than a year before the elections anyway, where was the rush? Somewhere down the road when the rand will have lost half it's value & international investors & intitutions will have lost confidence in RSA politics we'll all feel very sorry about this stunt the ANC has pulled off today.

Ayo Awe Joseph 9/20/2008 5:38:35 PM
I am surprised at this decision to force uncle Thabo to step down. This is a leader in Africa, not just South Africa. I fear for this South Africa who has been a pride of Africa through development and civilization under the white rule. They cant afford to make the mistakes that other African countries made through corrupt politicians who used thuggery to stay in power,Like Nigeria, Liberia, Serial Leone etc . The elites in SA must rise and rescue there fatherland from this political bandits.

Thibos 9/20/2008 5:44:02 PM
I am one of the ANC members but I am ashamed with the way the youth league is controlling the NEC.The following term might be the last one for ANC if ANCYL continues to rule the ANC. Thibos

Jaco Venter 9/20/2008 5:50:24 PM
Mr President Mbeki you are in our prayers that God will give you strength, comfort and guidance in this very difficult time you are going through not just as President of our country but more as a single man and human being before God and man. GOD bless you and keep you, GOD smile on you and gift you, GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.

SIBUSISOK 9/20/2008 5:53:29 PM
alas the end game: PAWN to King 7; Check! We have just replaced a lame duck President with a sitting duck President! not yet uhuru...What happens next will be the most critical events in our country's history, ever...

msamito 9/20/2008 5:56:18 PM
Now that T-man is out of the picture. I think even before the next election the ANC, COSATU and SACP they will be now on each other's throat. Just watch the space
