Mbeki features on ANC list

2009-01-14 13:06

Johannesburg - Former president Thabo Mbeki features on the list of candidates nominated by Gauteng ANC branches for a seat in the National Assembly, the provincial structure's list showed on Wednesday.

Provincial secretary David Makhura said he was not permitted to reveal the level of support, but for any candidate to appear on the list, he or she had to be nominated by at least five branches.

The province's list process began in October last year, a month after Mbeki was forced to resign as president.

The 300 branches in good standing out of the 356 in the province drew up the list which ultimately decides who gets seats in the provincial legislature and the National Assembly based on the results of the election.

Other well-known names featuring on the list include Tony Yengeni, Zwelinzima Vavi, Billy Masetlha and Blade Nzimande.

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema was not on Gauteng's nomination list.

The names will be finalised at a provincial list conference in Braamfontein this Saturday.

Nominees have until Thursday to say whether they accept or decline.

After axing him from the highest office in the country,do you think that he will accept a mere seat in the national assembly ??And besides didnt they read his letter that the ANC should use his name as they do not have confidence in him..Why elect him ???They should stop making a fool of themselves as they know he will decline...Idiots

vincent 1/14/2009 1:22:20 PM
I must be Thabo`s brother or its just a rumour to draw attention to the ANC. The only people that will vote for the ANC is those that are corrupt and those that does not have access to news. VJ

yeye 1/14/2009 1:27:55 PM
politics politics...is this the ANC's attempt of trying to get Mbeki to decide whether he is COPEing or ANCeering to Parliament to appease him for the "erroneous",and "incomprehendible" judgment by Nicholson? Who is a fool here?

hangwi 1/14/2009 1:35:45 PM
mbeki has taken a bow, so may he be left in peace to pursue his personal interest after 52 years of loyal service.to even mention his name in the same breath with Tony Yengeni, Zwelinzima Vavi, Billy Masetlha and Blade Nzimande, is degrading.

Mose 1/14/2009 1:36:16 PM
ANC must kick themselves - especially Julius Malema and his cronies - for sacking (aka recalling) Mbeki as president. he still has support, and they created COPE which will garner enough support to depose ANC's majority. Politicians and diapers need to be changed - often and for the same reason.

TradeMark 1/14/2009 1:36:48 PM
Just another desperate attempt to fool the rural mass, Not me. I say NO Vote for the ANC. I have explained to my dad what this the ACN is has turned to and he understood and promised not to vote for them. Please do the same for your parents. convince them that they are not what they used to be and make this country a better place for all.

Mel 1/14/2009 1:39:59 PM
I am almost convinced Tony Yengeni will not be allowed to be a MP. He had a jail sentance of longer than a year.

Bokamoso 1/14/2009 1:40:55 PM
What do they think they are doing, patronising former head of state like that, the former president is now busy with big things not this mickey mouse games they are playing, you will be hearing good things about him this year, the world will be amazed and the ANC will regrets recalling him. im pretty sure that he won't accept all, i mean his about to lauch his own baby where his skills will be appreaciated more that within the structures of the ANC.

Kasi Chief 1/14/2009 1:41:58 PM
I now see what Mbeki was saying. ANC has been Hijacked. Vavi and Blade two bad names for investors.

dambuza 1/14/2009 1:46:34 PM
What exactly do you want from a man you lost confidence.Give that position to Nicholson

Zolile 1/14/2009 1:48:40 PM
I thought the man was a disgrace to the ANC as per Mr Phosa'utterances? So why would they bring him back? I guess I know his response...besides the country needs a fresh breath, leave him alone and show us what you can deliver for all South Africans. The manifesto simply echoed Mbeki's words since 1999. Now move on, get over him!

peter maluleke 1/14/2009 1:49:08 PM
One more idiot in the anc will not make any change!

Is it... 1/14/2009 1:49:19 PM
I wish people would understand that TM was axed by the NEC not all the branches. Unlike others, we didn't find a need to leave ANC on the account of NEC axing TM, we resolved to stay and turn thing around. It doesn't matter how long it takes, but we will get it right. The current NEC have only five years in their seats and after that, we'll have a chance to right the wrongs, that's if there are any.

nthatuwa 1/14/2009 1:52:14 PM
This is funny!!Maybe his name was put in the list by those who eventually left for COPE because the situation just became hopeless in the ANC.I erally don't see Mbeki back in Parliament on ANC side.If I do,nothing in this world will ever surprise me.

tebogo 1/14/2009 1:52:38 PM
Believe it or not. Mbeki has claimed that he is a loyal member of the ANC. He should therefore accept or decline nomination with reason. He must come clear whether he is COPE or indeed ANC.The man does not have to be elected only in the NEC but as a deployee of the movement, he can also be deployed as a local councillor o

Is it... 1/14/2009 1:55:15 PM
Don't believe everything that you read and hear. Fortunately some of us can make our own minds without media's influence. It will be very surprising to see that more than 50% of South Africans are either corrupt or don't have access to the news after the polls. Intersting observation indeed...

Bumper 1/14/2009 1:55:22 PM
Mbeki is still a member of the ANC. In his letter to the ANC he did not decline deployment to government office. The final list conference only takes place coming saturday where it will determined whom will represent the ANC - led alliance in Government. Nobody needs to be fooled. The ANC is alive and always ready pushing back the frontiers of Poverty. It was again demonstrated last Saturday in East London where more then 100 000 ANC supports turned up for its election manifesto launch.

Franky 1/14/2009 1:56:29 PM
It the ANC trully had wisdom in their decision to embarass Mr Mbeki when they recalled him from parliament, basically because they lacked confidence in the man, why do they not leave him in peace. What don't they approach Nicholson for that position.Vavi,Malema,Phosa,Zuma, Gwede and Nzimande, you really are idiots guys.

fuzzy 1/14/2009 2:00:01 PM
The only way that Yengeni will get to be in the National assembly is if the presiderncy grants him a pardon. Given that the current ANC is a cartel of corrupt politicians this is not so far fetched. Shame on you ANC, you have failed your loyal servants who fought and died for you.

VavaVoom 1/14/2009 2:01:25 PM
Finally it has paid off for tha Vavis and them being nominated for the seats, congratulations.Trying many strategies there was not even one iontlligent person in that meeting who would have reasoned with the so-called leaders of the consequences, MBEKI didnt divide the ANC who recalled him did. I am not waisting my vote for the ANC they said they will rule until JESUS COMES, you dont play with such but minus my vote surry.

goons 1/14/2009 2:02:18 PM
thabo is a disgrace himself.. its an honour that he is even mentioned with those people, that is how low i think of him...i even want to vomit after saying his name..

Frankk 1/14/2009 2:03:21 PM
Oooohhhh suddenly when jacobi Zuma is facing charges we see friendship....ANC sucks lol...grow up people.

calvin 1/14/2009 2:06:12 PM
Getlemen, ANC is confused. Malema,Buti,Blade,Vavi and Gwede has cost ANC a fortune.I can't see leadership qualities on those poeple. They deserve to be followers.

Tman 1/14/2009 2:10:11 PM
Onother lousy ANC strategy to win the supportes of comrade Thabo Mbeki, I wonder when will it get through their thick skull that this man doesn't want anything to do with them,Oooh they are so pathetic.

Jonas 1/14/2009 2:14:03 PM
TM should retire. Then he can move to Zimbabwe, hold hands with Mad Bob, eat ginger and beetroot, and generally procrastinate, as he has been doing for the last ten years.

sihle-py 1/14/2009 2:23:28 PM
NB: MBEKI WAS RECALLED PARTLY BECAUSE THE ANC HAD LOST CONFIDENCE IN HIM OCCUPYING THE HIGHEST POST IN THE COUNTRY, HOWEVER HE STILL REMAINS A LOYAL MEMBER OF THE PARTY WHO IS STILL OPEN FOR DEPLOYMENT IN OTHER CABINET POSITIONS, SO LET THIS BE HIS DECISION WHETHER HE ACCEPTS OR DECLINES. PEOPLE HERE ARE VERY MISCHIEVOUS AND OPPORTUNISTIC-VERY QUICK TO TAKE A SWIPE AT THE ANC, THAT JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ANC POLITICS AND POLITICS IN GENERAL.

The mighty 1 1/14/2009 2:25:39 PM
We need to approach a situation with a clear mind & also weigh it. Lets not engage into a debate being blinded by the love of being a suppoter or a politician loyalist. The fact that Mr Mbeki is among the candidate in Gauteng shows that his fans still believe he can deliver. However ANC Seniors didnt write his name down, he was nominated by the members of the public. I will cast my vote for ANC & doesnt mean I am corrupt or Mr Zuma. Nobody has proven that he is guilty.

Goons you suck 1/14/2009 2:28:30 PM
Goons, do you know Mr Thabo Mbeki personally? You say it is an honour that he is mentioned with those other idiots, I think it is a disgrace that they can mention his name with them. Go ahead and vomit when using his name, you are sick, yes sick if you want to vomit because you are so jealous of Mbeki because he is a true and sincere person. Not much I can say for the ANC.

Komane Mashabela Phillip 1/14/2009 2:29:16 PM
it is unacceptable and degrading to think Mbeki can work alongside Zuma and his Mafias. This comrades are heroworshiping Zuma which Thabo Mbeki cann't afford to do. If we mean what we did to him as justice then let's leave him alone, but don't associate him with any other party b'cos he has declared that he will retire from active politics and remain loyal to the ANC. Remember that voting and participating in Active Politics as one's right. komane mp

COMRADE 1/14/2009 2:29:41 PM
Shame, was it not for the appeal court rulling than Mbeki would NOT have made the list. Tsk tsk they are trying to save face. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, good bye Anc. To the loyalists - YOU A N C NOTHING YET!
