Mbeki rejects EU demands on Zim

2008-07-02 08:00

Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki has rejected European Union (EU) demands that Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai must lead a future government in the southern African country, the SABC reported on Wednesday.

"The result that comes out of that process of dialogue, must be a result that is agreed by the Zimbabweans and we certainly - and certainly the African continent - has not made any prescriptions about the outcomes of what the Zimbabweans must negotiate among themselves," Mbeki told the public broadcaster after an African Union summit ended in Egypt.

The two-day summit called for a power-sharing deal between Zimbabwe's political foes. Robert Mugabe indicated that he is willing to engage in talks with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Illegitimate government

But the EU issued a statement after the summit, saying it would only accept a government in Zimbabwe under Tsvangirai's leadership.

"The European Union will not accept a government other than one led by Mr Tsvangirai," French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner told France 2 public television.

"The French presidency, along with the (European) Commission, is clear: the government is illegitimate if it isn't led by opposition leader Mr Tsvangirai."

But Mbeki disagreed, saying: "The AU and SADC (Southern African Development Community) cannot dictate the outcome of negotiations between Zimbabwe and political parties.

"Everybody is convinced that it is only via an instrument of an inclusive government, that includes all of these political parties of Zimbabwe, within a framework that they themselves would agree, that this is the only way you can take Zimbabwe forward."

This is utter cr@p. Once again, our spineless leader shows his true colours. He is dragging down Zimbabwe, he is dragging down South Africa with it. When will this country ever be ruled again by a "True Man" ?

youngster 7/2/2008 8:17:55 AM
it's sad that after elections we even hav 2 such discussions, i undastand EU's position but unfortunately their interference is creating a lot of rebeliousness out of African leaders. i also understand Mbeki as a mediator will want an amicable and inclusive solution. aren't we creating a precedent and a bad one?

sess 7/2/2008 8:21:11 AM
umbeki uyazinyela

Ian 7/2/2008 8:21:38 AM
Mbeki's comments clearly indicate that if a president steals power, as indicated by recent activity in Zimbabwe, then it is legitimate. This is clear indication that Mbeki has lost touch with the rule of law as is also evidenced by the lawlessness in South Africa. It is time Mbeki did the right thing and allow the will of the people to decide who rules South Africa, obviously it will not be him. His support of Mugabe is clearly due to his need to retain power himself.

AC 7/2/2008 8:22:00 AM
Mad Bob stole the country from the democratic vote of the people in the original election three months ago by use of delays, lies, violence and intimidation. South Africa the AU are simply accepting this terrorist military coupe leader as legitimate and are being super polite to him. I wonder what they world would do if Morgan Tsvangirai had taken over the rule of Zimbabwe by force.

fatman 7/2/2008 8:28:02 AM
Did you not see the bloodshed and murder of innocent MDC supporters?yet you still uplift Mugabe like some hero, you will have much to answer for not lifting a finger in final minutes of dying women and children. You will have no place to hide when the finger of judgement is pointed to you.You and Mugabe can hold hands in hell.

sean 7/2/2008 8:29:08 AM
Mbeki is letting us down as a nation. He is as bad as Bobo , Mbeki is a dreamer not a thinker and God is gonna punish him and his nation for side lining Mugabe and his regime so that his country could benefit from the situation in Zim. l wish Mbeki could go away for good such that new leader could be put in place to negotiate the talks.Mbeki is afraid of Mugabe , he is an indecisive politian.

JTA 7/2/2008 8:30:28 AM
.......there he goes again being squeezed and manipulated by Mugabe and he has the audacity to pretend that he has a backbone. Does the world really believe that Mugabe has "conceded" to anything? Once he is back in Zimbo Land he will continue doing what he seems to be good at, murder, intimidation, blaming the West, inciting the "war veterans" etc. All the while being coddled by the Mr Plastocene Man - Mbeki.

Kobus 7/2/2008 8:32:57 AM
Reckon America and the EU should not just start with very serious sanctions against Zimbabwe but against all those countries (including SA) whose stupid president continues to support this dictatorshop. That way all his little cronies and praise singers will soon wake up to reality and realise that they are after all small fry!

Lerato 7/2/2008 8:33:45 AM
Mbeki and Mugabe are the same. Mbeki is not a fair president at all.Mbeki is just letting SA down.

Disgusted 7/2/2008 8:34:03 AM
The people of Zim HAVE SPOKEN already, our dear president....but neither you nor Mr Bob are listening!!!!

morena 7/2/2008 8:34:42 AM
"The European Union will not accept a government other than one led by Mr Tsvangirai," French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner told France 2 public television" and they say europe is not trying to control africa again whites are hypocrytes

basically EU decides who they want as the leader of an african state, forget ZIM, SADC, AU,'s opinions EU, US don't want anyone but morgan, how about bush steps down and let obama run, EU disgust me

Robert 7/2/2008 8:38:49 AM
The only time our president ever actually makes a decision or a stand and it's to support Mugabe! What's wrong with this picture? The Zimbabwean people have had their say... they voted... MDC won the election, ZANU-PF came in second... who cares about 50%? The majority of the vote didn't vote for him!

morena 7/2/2008 8:42:15 AM
now its about stole election how about stolen land, last month it was about brutality, two months back it was about zim economy, when all this start it was about mugabe wanting his people's land back and for eu to keep thier lancasterhouse agreement alas all that is forgotten because it implicated white man but black man mugabe is the devil amazing

soda 7/2/2008 8:43:25 AM
i cannot understand how mbeki can still look himself in the mirror these days with all the bull he comes up with... the will of the zim people? why do all those leaders who claim the people's will is paramount don't put in observers and ask the people who they want? mbeki is siding with all the degenerate, backward rulers of the african continent... and is dragging south africa's reputation own with him. i dislike zuma... but thabo is just one spineless leader i no longer have the stomach for.

morena 7/2/2008 8:45:38 AM
with you on that Mr President Thabo Mbeki and De klerk should be hanged

S'mething Amiss 7/2/2008 8:45:55 AM
There is only one thing! Clearly Mugabe has something on Mbeki, else we wouldn't be going through all this.

Xeno 7/2/2008 8:49:04 AM
Mbeki ! Your arrogance proceeds YOU! If I were you I will keep these EU nations happy. We want them to visit us in 2010. Smile and wave my dear, because that's all you've been doing any ways!

Joker 7/2/2008 8:49:23 AM
Its astounding how many times our politicians resort to use big words like framework and looong sentences that in the end, it is just one big word salad - totally missing the point and not answering the question. Our president mbeki has totally missed the pot and is BLIND (perhaps blinded?) to everything. As he tries to please everybody, he has made nothing but a fool of himself. "I dont know the key to success, but I do know that the key to failure is trying to please everybody"

Faith 7/2/2008 8:49:41 AM

Taks 7/2/2008 8:55:48 AM
Thabo Mbeki is not only denial but also ignorant of the views of the rest of the world and the will of Zimnabweans people. his so called 'quite diplomacy'' is not only stupid but a dangeroous tactic that may result in genocide or war.Mugabe feels comfortable while he is around other African Presidents like Muammar Gaddafi who is not a saint in his own country. We were expecting the AU to expose Mugabe so that he can feel naked among other African Counterparts, instead they massage & comfort him.

siphelo 7/2/2008 8:57:30 AM
THE EU AND THE US UST NOT DICTATE WHO IS GOING TO LEAD ZIMBABWE. THE MUST GET IT INTO THEIR HEADS THAT THEY ARE NOT THE RULERS OF THE WORLD. THE ZIMBABWEIANS LEADERS MUST DECIDE THEMSELVES HOW ARE THEIR GOING TO RUN ZIMBABWE, NOT THE SO CALLED "MASTERMIND OF DEMOCRACY"

Philosopher 7/2/2008 8:57:46 AM
If the MDC takes power, it will have replaced the original liberation movement in Zim. That creates a precedent which the ANC will definitely not want to be followed in SA. With a pro-west, democratic government just north of our border, the pressure will build even more on the ANC and its failures. Especially if Zim suddenly starts prospering under MDC rule. Maybe, just maybe, it will give traditional ANC voters some food for thought, and the government don't want that.

morena 7/2/2008 8:58:13 AM
are like a people who say come and invest in our country in mining and employe us and exploite us while you can make billions a month from our minerals as long as you give R2000 i will be happy, same as the people who oppose BBBEE,BEE,AA

Mokone 7/2/2008 8:59:48 AM
I understans that every thing said by white man or europoens deciding future of africans must be done because of continued threat of sanctions.Tzvangarai can be made deputy president since he withdrew from polls charecterised by "violance".for EU to dictate who they will recognise as president is stupit and should not be alllowed.I'm tired of this Euro mentality towards us africans.

SB 7/2/2008 9:01:26 AM
Morena, do you even know what you are talking about.

Louis 7/2/2008 9:04:16 AM
People will claim,(including BOB) that he wanted to get the land that was stolen from them by "White and Western" people/countries, and that's why he's doing all this and that's why he will remain in power until there is no more white/western interference in his Country. I can understand that he himself wants this, but does his country want this? Did he ask them? Did he get some sort of poll going? Now his country is in an extremely big crisis. And our president is a 100% clone!

teboho 7/2/2008 9:09:00 AM
zim must sort out their problems amongst themselves. thabo is not a president of that country, and he is not scared to say what he thinks of the situation there.you people will never appreciate his mediation efforts until he says mugabe must hang, which is never gonna happen.the bottom line is he is not the cause of zim problems so stop looking to him to resolve them.SHUT UP...

Filemon 7/2/2008 9:09:35 AM
Thabo, the Zimbabwean people spoke on 27 March. Morgan was elected despite mugabe's vote rigging. How many more times must they speak? Your mediation ceased after the elections so stop protecting dicatator mugabe! He is illegitimate and stop referring to mugabe as President! Otherwise you are tacitily condoning this sham, bogus, illegitimate election against ZEC law!

morena 7/2/2008 9:11:42 AM
"Reckon America and the EU should not just start with very serious sanctions against Zimbabwe but against all those countries (including SA" so we can be self reliant and self sufficient but they will still get in our affairs through pupets like morgan and thier suppoters

morena 7/2/2008 9:15:57 AM
united states of africa is the one of the way we can stop the west interferring on our affairs, castro, mugabe, eddie, charles taylor, ect ended up being dictators because they wouldn't allow explotation of africa even though they themselves went crazy

Stefans 7/2/2008 9:17:15 AM
It is disgusting to see the world becoming a spectator on what is happening to the poor people of Zimbabwe, it's like the world leaders are paralised and cannot take action. It's a long known fact that African leaders are enjoying what Mugabe is doing to Zimbabweans since they will probably do the same in future if they lose elections. Mbeki has long failed to resolve the problems in Zimbabwe, he has made claims of a 'talks' taking place, while knowing very well that he is lying.

Amelia 7/2/2008 9:18:29 AM
Is our president's behaviour, non action and alleged diplomacy an indication of what awaits the people of South Africa? Does his actions or lack thereoff contribute to the state of our economy, inflation and the indecision of future and present international investors?

Marcus 7/2/2008 9:18:57 AM
Our President is Calling for a Power Sharing Government in Zim. Lets be honest does anyone think Mugabe is capable of Sharing Power with anyone(Opponent). The issue in Zimbabwe should have been attended to after the 1st Elections. Now whether EU or AU does/doesnt recognise the Presidential Election it means nothing to an Avg Zim Resident. Zimbabwe needs a Fresh Election where there will be Peace Keepers in the Country, then and only then we will have a clear reflection of what the Zims want.

Voyager 7/2/2008 9:19:05 AM

Agent Orange 7/2/2008 9:20:51 AM
an embarrasment to the nation Thabo. Maybe you should try crack the nod for the leader of the ANCYL...your ridiculous comments would fit right in over there.

Endriette Meyer 7/2/2008 9:21:39 AM
I find it interesting that Mr Mbeki could react so quickly to these demands while for the past few months he could hardly react to anything else that concerns Zimbabwe. Another joke is that he says that the people of Zimbabwe must negotiate among themselves. The majority did vote for Tsvangirai - that's a fact. Mugabe simply do not take into account what the people feel or says. Mr President, Zimbabwe do not only consist out of a certain Mr Mugabe - and only him!!!

joseph 7/2/2008 9:22:26 AM
Zimbabwe is nolonger UN,EU,AU,but God's baby.and our deliverance it does not come human but for Jehova. Please stop helping God because he does not need you, to do what is doing. Lets just Agree in prayer that your will for Zimbabwe be done.

GALT 7/2/2008 9:23:35 AM
Projecting human values upon a retarded race is naive.

Ian 7/2/2008 9:26:13 AM
Morena forgets that in March, Zim voted. Rightly or wrongly, the people of Zim gave more support for the MDC. Mugabe had indicated prior to this that he would accept the results of the vote, yet failed to do so saying Morgan would never rule Zim. Constitutionally, Mugabe has illegally taking control of Zim effectively in a Coup. Who cares who rules Zim going forward as long as it is a legally elected representative. THe Eu's failure to recognise Mugabe is based on rule of law and the constitution

Sad 7/2/2008 9:29:14 AM
I find it so sad that our countries have been so badly been let down by leadership both here in our amazing country and in Zim. And this has lead to the death of so many inncocent people.

Okkie le Roux 7/2/2008 9:30:05 AM
If Mugabe and Zanu-PF supporters were white, Mbeki would have condemned the situation in the strongest possible way. The struggle was not for freedom it was to get power to do and allow the same crimes against humanity. Comrade Mugabe surely "cannot do anything wrong". This comrade "thing" is also proven by the lack of accountability in our own government. We WILL become a second Zim! Viva ZIM AMUZ

Skeptic 7/2/2008 9:33:04 AM
I have given up on Zim. I went through all the phases of common sense. I have decided to laugh it off now, and regard Robert Mugabe as the Court Jester who gives all his subjects a good laugh with his incredible wit(sic!) and uncommon sense. It is only up to the Zimbabweans to do something if they want to. If there is no will, then that is it. We are wasting resources, time and money on something that does not want to be helped. Just leave them to self destruct.

Gemini 7/2/2008 9:34:47 AM
There is only one way that Mbeki will listen to reason and that is if Fifa threaten to take the 2010 WC away from SA and give it to a 1st world country like Australia that respects rule of law and democracy.

sss 7/2/2008 9:36:21 AM
No one can dictate as to who should lead the Zim goverment of national unity including your west...

Philip 7/2/2008 9:36:28 AM
Mbeki's stance is contemptuous of the people of Zim that voted Mugabe out, and just as contemptuous of the voices of South Africans that call for action. With all the power that he has to make things right he just drops his pants to get rogered by Mugabe again. Is this Mugabe's revenge for being rogered by missionary priests?
