I will resign - Rasool

2008-07-17 09:27

Cape Town - On the day that beleaguered Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool confirmed that he was asked to resign, the ANC said more intervention was coming in other provinces - including the Eastern Cape.

On a national level, the ANC has maintained its silence over the fate of Rasool and his Eastern Cape counterpart Nosimo Balindlela. But on Wednesday, Rasool said in an interview with Die Burger that there was no doubt about it: he will resign.

He also said he could at least ask whether it was a fair and wise decision.

'Package of intervention'

On Wednesday, ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe, said the Western and Eastern Cape were only two of the five provinces where the ANC would intervene.

According to Mantashe, the Free State, North West and Northern Cape, were next in line.

Mantashe said during an information session for fund managers that this was part of a "package of intervention", which would be extended to government departments and institutions.

It was all part of the preparations to ensure that the transition to the 2009 election was "smooth".

Rasool said he did not accept that the reason for his replacement was poor service delivery.

The premier told Die Burger that the national chairperson of the ANC, Baleka Mbete, had told him earlier this week that he would be replaced. "Those were her exact words: that I would be replaced because it was in the interest of the province."

'Narrow-minded politics'

Mbete met with Rasool again on Wednesday morning, where he was given the assurance that the national leadership wants him to remain in the Western Cape parliament and ANC structures.

But Rasool said he did not exactly have pleasant memories of the provincial parliament.

"I tried to keep my nose out of the narrow-minded politics of the ANC and to be a good premier, but I did not please everyone".

It is easy to walk away from a job but not from your honour, he said. "But I also want to know what I did wrong and why only I am being selected."

The National executive of the ANC debates which premiers stay, and then they give the order to the ANC members of the province. The central national command also come up with a name the replacement. In the next session the members of the provincial government "elect" the new premier.Mayors are "elected" along similar lines. Am I the only person who don't see the democracy in this. Why is this not embarrassing to the ANC? Why do we have provinces and local governments?

Who on earth truely believes that he was forced out because of poor service delivery? Surely in view of the deteriorating health and security situation in this country, and non delivery of houses, there are members of cabinetwho messed up a good bit more. These blatant "circle of friends"actions are a sign of what to expect under Zuma. And the ANC provincial parlament members (many of whom are ex NNP) just doggedly follow the instructions of central command! They will convene in a few days to "elect" a premier.

Previous reports indicated corruption? The 'leaks and leaks' sounds like a negative remark, makes me wonder?

Ami 7/17/2008 10:31:36 AM
You were part of the narrow-minded politics of the ANC while it suited you and played the game alongside the rest while the ANC was consuming itself. As for service delivery... ag please!!

as a politician , you should have expected something like this to happen sooner or later.Jobs for pals and other political expediencies etc, etc. im sure the DA or ID would welcome you with open arms.

Maybe now we will have a premier that actually CARES for the well-being of the Western Cape. If it weren't for our mayor, we would've been in a heap a long time ago. Mr. Rasool's bickering did nobody any good. Give us someone like Cyril Ramaphosa or anyone else who has a clue about running an efficient enterprise.

Welcome to the new South Africa where dog eats dog!, only this is not about survival, It is called "The buddy, buddy" system!!. What goes round comes round!!

has in fact been fired for poor service delivery, the I say, well done to the ANC - there is a faint glimmer at the end of a very dark and long tunnnel. However, the practically minded amongst us would probably concur that the reason he was fired is because he does not fit the ANC agenda - whatevere that may be....

i think is a good thing, when someone misused de government resources n again dta does not deliver as he/she elected to his/her duties to de communities they should be replaced in de position. Regards Mr J.S.Sitiba

Why could the leadership of the ANC not have waited till after the 2009 elections to make their populist decision to remove the Mbeki alligned premiers. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Western Cape opposition parties are laughing in silence at the self inflicting damage the ANCYL style decisions are making. There is a political vacuum in SA as my vote has no home. My political ideals is still best captured by the ANC but i cannot align myself with the new immorral leadership. UDF ?

Eric Makouana 7/17/2008 11:52:19 AM
I do not understand why the actual ANC can not wait until 2009 to replace the so called premier. I presume this is not good for the stability of the province. I think it is wrong message sent to the public that there is division within the ANC and it is time to pay back. You have to align yourself with the ruling faction for to be appointed. I think we should elect our premier to avoid all of this mess in the future.

AC 7/17/2008 12:36:32 PM
It was obvious from the start that Rasool was not honest with the public and had a hidden agenda and only favoured himself and his inner circle of family and friends to the detriment of his parties interests.

ANC IS NOT SOLVING ANYTHING BY REMOVING RASOOL ,IT ONLY REDUCES IT'S SUPPORTERS FOR NEXT YEAR'S ELECTIONS

Arthur 7/17/2008 6:08:07 PM
By attacking the opposition at every turn with his rhetoric to try and convince his masters he is of value to them. Favoring his circle of friends, and getting fat on the labors of the people he was supposed to represent. At the end of it all, doing swatcha, a big fat zero for them. Mr Rosool is getting his just rewards; the only thing wrong is that he has been given the opportunity to resign, thereby retaining his benefits. This is the problem... rewarding politicians for doing nothing.
