Does 'elminate' mean kill?

Dear Editor,

"We must... intensify the struggle to eliminate the remnants of counter-revolution, which include the DA and a loose coalition of those who want to use state power to block the ANC President's ascendancy to the highest office of the land."

These are the chilling utterings of Julius Malema, president of the ANCYL.

Does this man even begin to understand democracy? I think not! If he did he would not be labelling the DA as "counter-revolutionaries". He would recognise that any healthy democracy needs an opposition party that is going to continuously challenge the ruling party when necessary.

I would love to know what he means by "eliminate". Has he found what he thinks is a more acceptable way of saying "kill"? He is also always on about the revolution. For Gods sake man, the "revolution" is over. The ANC has control of the country.

Wake up Malema, the only "struggle" the ANC is involved in is its members struggling to steal as much as possible and then stay out of jail by any means possible.

There are no doubt many good men and women in the ANC but we do not hear their voices above the senseless noise made by the likes of Malema.

The only way a useless organisation such as the ancyl can make headline news, is through controvetial statements. They have NEVER made the news for making any positive contribtion tosociety. The best thing we could all do is to simply ignore them.

I wonder if Julius ever tried out for a spot on Isidingo, or Generations, or the phenomenally awesome Sokhulu and Partners (the one SA drama besides the Lab that I manage to watch fairly regularly)? Julius has all the rubbings on an irate actor who never got the recognition he "rightfully" deserved; now doing anything for attention. Intelligent and articulate, Julius just reminds me too much of that failed Austrian painter some 90 odd years ago. Tisk tisk!

I think that he is doing what Zanu PF did in Zim. He wants people to fear going against electing or speaking out against Zuma. He wants the perception in the peoples mind that if they don't rubber stamp Zuma, chaos will ensure via the country's youth. But in a country shell shocked by violent crime, his threats and tough guy stance is laughable. Bring it on ANCYL, what happen in Zim won't be tolerated here.

Malema is an idiot so are all followers in the ANCYL, but be careful, making statements of this nature can invoke a place in the white community that is sleeping at the moment. Regardless of whether or not he uses eliminate to mean kill, its the people that listen to him we should worry about. What is their interpretation? This is yet another example of why "colonialists" will not take African politics seriously. The ANC were elected by democratic means and we now hear those elected spouting about eliminating opposition parties, in by democracy, stay in by dictatorship. Does Malema believe in the same free election process as Bob. Up the counter revolution!

The ANC has proved itself over and over that they are rive with incompetence and is shot gunning down the road of derelict governance. Unions striking because of food and fuel prices - thus helping in further increases due to revenue loss, ANCYL still fighting a non-existing struggle, Zuma chopping off non-supportive premiers. It will end in civil war the way it is going now. The best of all is that all these incompetents still blame their incompetence on apartheid and the white man/west.

In the 80's a military signal went out that certain people had to be permanently removed from society.As far as I remember this was accepted by the law as an order to kill... I doubt whether Comrade Julius could pass a blood test, but incitement is illegal and prosecutable, something that may not have dawned on his limited intellect. As for democracy, well that may be too subtle for him so he would not know how to be accountable to it. However, his rhetoric is about positioning the upcoming Zuma trail and that does have implications because it is going to get warm - this may be a watershed period for all of us.

Firstly i find it hard that he fails to apprehend the word "revolution. For us Africans revolution is not over when: (1) the majority of people are still poor. (2)_economic power is still in the hands of few. (3) the judiciary is still being haunted by the apratheid ghosts. (4) ownership of the land still resides with a few. We might say the first phase of revolution that is political power has been won but the second phase of revolution that is economic emancipation of Africans has not been achieved.

Now I believe the Human Rights court will still say he did not threaten to kill anyone, as eliminate could have two meanings, the same as kill does, according to them. Jail the MF, he does not know what the struggle was about and was not part of it. His struggle is to spend all the money he gets for doing nothing.

If those are the things still keeping your "African revolution" alive, then how long will it still take to "free" Zimbabwe? After 28 years under Bob almost all of the people are poor, economic power and land are in the hands of a few (new people) and judicially well, it does seem that the law only applies to and is applied by a few. I have empathy for the idea that the revolution is not over whilst so many remain disadvantaged. But revolution is still about democracy, not absolute power. Democracy is the only sustainable building block of great economies. Absolute power does the opposite - it deprives the masses of freedom by enriching the elite. Africa needs to learn how to use democratic power to uplift all sustainably.

I can't begin to describe how sad it is that someone who should be setting an example for the youth to aspire to chooses such an example. The rhetoric of tyrants is hardly helpful. Yes, there is stil a massive economic divide (though some have managed to make the leap), but exactly how does this sort of mindset help matters? It hasn't helped in other African countries.

In every oppressed nation on earth, there is a movement standing up and apposing the oppression. The ANC itself took up the armed struggle against oppression. When your fellow countrymen no longer have a home, are being systematically murdered, disarmed and marginalised, are we realy surprised to see the birth of resistance. De La Rey? Retaliation? defence? freedom? - Malema should perhaps be a little more circumspect about elimination it may well be on an agenda not of his composition.
