Johannesburg - The African National Congress (ANC), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) have given assurances that local government elections in KwaZulu-Natal will be free from intimidation and violence.
The joint announcement was made on Saturday, following a Durban meeting between the three parties' representatives, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Brigalia Bam, and provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery.
The ANC, IFP and Nadeco called on their members and supporters to allow free political activity across the province ahead of Wednesday's poll.
Bam added there was "a greater level of political tolerance in KwaZulu-Natal compared to previous elections".
Strong police contingents will be deployed in Estcourt and Nongoma for the elections on March 1.
