Kimberly - Four prominent political figures in the Northern Cape have joined Cope in Kimberley, a party co-ordinator said on Thursday.
Cope co-ordinator Fezile Kies said Fred Wyngaard, the outgoing MEC for sports, arts and culture in the province and a trade unionist, had joined the party.
The others were Neville Mompati, the former ANC provincial secretary; Samora Ka-Komazi, the Frances Baard region's ANC secretary; and Kenneth Sinclair, a former member of the provincial legislature and adviser to premier Dipuo Peters.
Mompati recently lost the battle for chairperson of the ANC in the Northern Cape to John Block.
Kies said the new Cope members from the ANC had resigned from the party in the past week.
"We are also proud to announce that Mr Wyngaard would immediately assume the task of leading Cope in the Northern Cape."
Kies said Cope in the province was confident that the political standing of the four would add weight to the new political movement's impact in "reshaping the province's political landscape".
"The move by these tested leaders of the people will significantly strengthen Cope's organisational capacity in seizing control of the Northern Cape province," Kies said.
