Cape Town - South Africa has to get tougher on criminals if it wants to deal with crime effectively, deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) Jacob Zuma said on Friday.
"There must be no mercy with criminals," he told a community anti-crime meeting at Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats.
He said there was too much emphasis placed on the rights of criminals as opposed to those of victims.
"I believe as a country, we have to deal with the issue of crime more effectively and make the laws bite - if we want to protect ourselves and our children," Zuma said.
