Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance will launch a three-week nationwide anti-crime campaign on Monday to make South Africa's streets safer.
Spokesperson James Lorimer said the campaign would be the second of three major campaigns to be undertaken by the DA in the build-up to the 2004 general election.
He said the objectives of the campaign were to promote the DA's plan to raise the number of police officers to a total of 150 000 and to demonstrate how the government was failing in its duty to keep them safe.
"The aim is to put pressure on the government to fulfil its obligations to make our streets safe."
Lorimer said the campaign would operate in 14 campaign zones, to match the regional structures of the DA. Public representatives, caucuses, branches and activists would all be involved.
He said the campaign would consist of the display of 70 000 posters in all 11 official languages, the distribution of three million pamphlets in all official languages outlining the critical levels of crime in society, the DA's call for thousands of additional police officers and the DA's action plan to beat crime.
"We will stage events to focus on crime in each province and organise local activities to show support for the police and to raise public consciousness about fighting crime".
Lorimer said that during the three-week campaign, the DA would also unveil its new policy on safety and security.
