Bisho - The DA will ask the Public Protector to investigate alleged "fruitless" expenditure by Eastern Cape OR Tambo district municipality mayor Zoleka Capa, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
"The Democratic Alliance will request an investigation by the Public Protector on whether the R3.15m spent by ANC mayor of the OR Tambo district municipality, Zoleka Capa, on a lavish trip to Zambia, was unauthorised and fruitless expenditure," MP Willem Doman said in a statement.
"The R3.15m spent by mayor Capa certainly does not appear to fall into the ambit of legitimate municipal expenditure."
Doman said if it was found to be unauthorised expenditure, the mayor and councillors involved should be held responsible and pay back the money in terms of Section 176 (2) of the Local Government Finance Management Act of 2003.
Nobody in the mayor's office was available for comment.
