Lekota to lose his bodyguards

2008-11-18 12:04

Johannesburg - The SA Police Service has served ANC breakaway leader Mosiuoa Terror Lekota with a notice that his bodyguards will be withdrawn, officials said on Tuesday.

But Lekota, leader of the new opposition party Congress of the People, maintains his life is under threat and that he needs protection.

"You've seen it, not only at meetings he held both in Gauteng and Durban and everywhere else; there's a constant threat," said his spokesperson Tseliso Phomane.

"Not only because he was a minister, but because of this new organisation. There are people who want him dead and they say it openly; they don't even hide it."

Police policy

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said it was policy to withdraw bodyguards of a minister a month after he or she left office.

"Our policy is that a minister who has left office only qualifies for a month extra of protection, after which it is withdrawn," said Naidoo.

Lekota's resignation as defence minister from the Thabo Mbeki cabinet became effective on September 25.

When pointed out that it had already been more than a month since his resignation, Naidoo replied that he did not know when Lekota resigned.

"He's been informed that his protection has been withdrawn," said Naidoo. "These are the policies we have to stick by."

Representation to police

But Phomane said that Lekota was "attending to the matter; he's addressing the powers that be".

Phomane denied reports that Lekota was planning to lodge a court interdict on the matter.

Naidoo said Lekota was welcome to make a representation to the police on the matter.

Neither party would say if Lekota still enjoyed the services of bodyguards on Tuesday.

"This morning there was an indication that the guys might join him," said Phomane.

Naidoo declined to say when the withdrawal of protection would come into effect.

'Kill Lekota'

Lekota was among a string of cabinet ministers who resigned out of loyalty to former president Thabo Mbeki, who was removed from office by the national executive committee of the ANC in September.

Since then, Lekota, alongside his former deputy defence minister Mluleki George and former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa, has announced the creation of a breakaway party called the Congress of the People.

ANC supporters have several times tried to disrupt Cope meetings, so much so that Lekota did not attend a recent meeting due to security concerns.

At a meeting in Orange Farm, Gauteng, ANC supporters chanted "kill Lekota" outside the venue.

"They say it openly". This is such typical monkey mentality. ANC DIE!!!!!

Mo 11/18/2008 12:19:41 PM
Comrades, Lekota will be left alone in the cold, and when he looks around he will find himself alone, feeling londley and is then when will return to Free State and better start farming

Elsabe 11/18/2008 12:25:48 PM
If I were in the ANC, I would do anything to protect Lekote, because if something happens to Lekota it will be for the ANC's account. Give him his bodyguards.... why do the Police want to follow policies now.... rather focus on more important issues....

SF 11/18/2008 12:29:32 PM
The Arrogant National Congress in action.

Siyanda 11/18/2008 12:31:34 PM
Why do I get the feeling that this has ANC written all over it.......... They can't play the game now they choose to play dirty. Typical

Thaps 11/18/2008 12:34:47 PM
Hau Lekota? Do you still want our taxes to pay for your protection even when you don't serve in the government anymore?I thought cope had a "budget" like any other political party to pay for their own protection services..Let go Baba... I wonder if you even know how much monthly rental is?Its time all political leaders become practical ....

S 11/18/2008 12:44:07 PM
Only in S.A.! The KZN MEC for Social Security gets a bodyguard with a car that has tinted windows and a blue light, nogal. A non-ANC politician who is actually threatened by ANC thugs, must take his chances out there. Go figure!

C O P E 11/18/2008 12:44:21 PM
I see stupid comments from ANC people who think is those time when killing was that cheap, try it and you'll see what's comming for you stupid, the guy will be protected.why don't you start campaining

Salgado 11/18/2008 12:45:56 PM
I'm a former special forces opperative and I can be your bodygaurd for a reasonable fee.

G 11/18/2008 12:51:08 PM
He doesn't work for govt anymore. He should pay for his own security, just like every other South African would have to. Francois - you are exactly like those you criticize.

Ant 11/18/2008 12:53:18 PM
Is Zuma still a minister? I bet you HE has bodyguards...

Ashanzi 11/18/2008 12:53:32 PM
IT is sad that South African politics have degenerated from a democracy to the ZANU-PF and Mugabe policy of using intimidation tactics to try and retain the power of the so-called "ruling" party. I say, let all the ANC "cadres" lose their bodyguards too, and then they will be forced to attend to crime and security matters. But they don't have the guts to face the public unprotected!

Les 11/18/2008 12:56:23 PM
Francois, you are havin a racist mentality...dont call people "monkey Mentality"..tackle the issue's....!

Ngwato Lekgoro 11/18/2008 12:56:43 PM
Mr Lekota should not complain.I think he knew that would happen as he is no longer a cabinet minister.SAPS applies the policy.

Viwe 11/18/2008 12:57:29 PM
But Zuma enjoyed state protection long after he was removed from his position. He always had an army of people around him along with State security vehicles...!How come???

MZINTO 11/18/2008 12:57:44 PM
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. As you are promising to work for the people I think this is a right time for COPE to give out tenders for security companies. Please do I hope I will get a tender from you unlike the 8yrs I waited with the ANC fat cats.Mzinto

Barak Obama 11/18/2008 12:59:26 PM
I am learning a lot from South Africa, which I will apply in the USA.

Disgusted 11/18/2008 1:01:33 PM
The typical ANC arrogance once again rears its ugly head. Vote them out!

gert 11/18/2008 1:02:20 PM
I wonder if Tabu Mbeki's body gaurds are also terminated? ANC's famous slogan "better life for all" should read "better life for our members only" (the rest may be killed)? This country is a joke!

Guy 11/18/2008 1:04:04 PM
Have you seen the S.A.P?! Do you REALLY want those palookas watching your back? You'll be dead a month before your squad finds anything amiss. Take Salgado up on his offer, even if spelling wasn't among the courses offered at 5 Recce.

Just Me 11/18/2008 1:05:04 PM
...... yet they scrambled around on death threats @ the court rooms for him.... w.t.f.?

rg 11/18/2008 1:06:08 PM
...if the ANC manages to make a martyr out of Lekota. That would do infinite good for COPE's cause. Maybe they should carry on protecting him, after all! Anyway - all this tribal warfare would be quite hilarious if it weren't deadly serious.

Bbalwa 11/18/2008 1:06:40 PM
Lekota you just need to relax ANC is trying its luck to humilate your dignity to communite but it wont help we love you and support you you will have a body guard do not let them scare you you are a real commrade

T 11/18/2008 1:07:58 PM
Ntate Lekota hle ka kopo let the guys go, if you are worried that you will be killed then you will have to appoint your own BGs at you own expense Jo...

Mahuntsu 11/18/2008 1:08:28 PM
I also need protetion, but i dont work for govt anymore.Come on Lekota, get real..Do you know how many people are threatened everyday? If govt had to provide protection for all of us,hai aretse.Lekota, get your own guard dogg. You are not a minister anymore. You didnt get fired but you fired urself.

The Gardian 11/18/2008 1:10:00 PM
Seriously WTF, does democracy only apply to a few people in this country? Its time for a change in the whole political system, espically on how the operate. Every competition has rules so its only fair that come next year at elections cheaters should be kicked out of the race

chipper chap 11/18/2008 1:10:38 PM
Yip, its an awful feeling to be unprotected like the rest of us ordinary folks are everyday hey? Nevermind though, we will def support COPE even if you are no more as at least you had the guts to give most of us HOPE also.

Filemon 11/18/2008 1:12:08 PM
So they must now pay to protect the one's they want to kill.

Seelan 11/18/2008 1:12:15 PM
This is a democratic country and any incumbent that wants to start a political party should be able to do so; that incumbent must also receive protection from SAPS. It is obvious that the nascent COPE party has already created undulations in the disgruntled ANC supporter category - this is marked by the incendiary statements made by ANC stalwarts and supporters alike - Lekota must be afforded protection for this very reason. Respect our constitution!!

Benzo 11/18/2008 1:12:31 PM
I don't have one. Why should Lekota or anyone else for that matter?

Annoyed 11/18/2008 1:15:19 PM
It seems the distance between state institutions and the ANC is zero. SA is becoming a joke unfortunately. It all revolves around control and a one party state. We do not deserve this!!!!

Bbalwa 11/18/2008 1:16:35 PM
Lekota you just need to relax ANC is trying its luck to humilate your dignity to communite but it wont help we love you and support you you will have a body guard do not let them scare you you are a real commrade

Jeffrey 11/18/2008 1:18:16 PM
ANC is arrogant. They think they own this country and can do whatever they like. They (ANC) are abusing power just like Robert Mugabe and they need to be reminded that this is a democratic country. COPE will destroy them at the polls. They will loose tremendous number of seeds in parliament because of this corruptive and arrogant behaviour. Viva COPE VIVA!! Let them panic and feel our presence.

kamogelo 11/18/2008 1:24:44 PM
This is a classic tale of how African countries become banana republics when people that are in the ANC feel that they are bigger than the country and its pople, its truelly sad what we have done to a beautiful dream that no so lon ago we were the toast of the world.

CJ 11/18/2008 1:24:47 PM
It was unfair to all ordinary South Africans to pay for this thug's security. He was a minister and he decided to quit. we walk around without bodyguards and he should do the same or hire his own Bodyguards. so stop crying Lekota, we all don't have bodyguards.

zulu 11/18/2008 1:27:42 PM
Do you still remeber the shell house killings? Zulu's were killed. Now it is time for the Zulu nation to rule. We have not forget those who got killed. Get body gaurds to protect you.

mb 11/18/2008 1:29:04 PM
C'mon people, it is just policy, if you don't like it, next year go and vote so that you can CHANGE it, but you must first go and register, it is as simple as that, it is called democracy!!!

samsam 11/18/2008 1:29:47 PM
Hey Lekota knows legislations well, what does Public Financial Management Act says?. This is fruitless expenditure, two months has lapse already.

Annonymous 11/18/2008 1:31:20 PM
If Lekota dies or anything happens to him, maybe people will realise exactly what the ANC is made of(Criminals)!Body guard or no body guard go aheard lekota campaign if it means you die then this country will praise you for saving us even with your own life.

Lucky Dingiso 11/18/2008 1:33:19 PM
I do not see the news worthy part of this. It is a starnderd procedure that: One month after a minister has vacated his/her position will not be provided with bodyguards by the state. So it sould be. It has nothing to do with that particular indivindual's current political affilietes. Have we ran out of things to debate? I am sure Mr. Lekota, a man that I admire, won't have any problems arrenging bodyguard at his own axpence with the co-operation of the SAPS of course.

C O P E 11/18/2008 1:34:01 PM
Your Leaders are Blade phuza-face Nzimande, Zwelinzima Credit card Vavi, Jacob Shower Corruption Zuma, Julias Matric Malema, and other less brain peolple you have at ANC. who's gonna campaigne for your guys, I see ANC is busy campaining for C O P E......... haa...haaa.haaa we rock. let's C O P E Mzantsi.......

singa 11/18/2008 1:35:57 PM
Do we really have to link everything to politics. the fact is Lekota is no longer working for SA government as a minister, therefore, services being provided by government must come to an end. Which will then mean that he must also lose the bodyguards since he is now a normal citizen.

andre 11/18/2008 1:36:32 PM
mr lekkota sould be protected as he is the next in line for abuse from ANC members .as a country we will not be abel to go tru anuther criss hani assasionation. better life for oll is theare slogen but at this stage it looks like only the party members gets to be safe

cassuis 11/18/2008 1:37:09 PM
wait a minute, he will loose his bodygaurds, fine, because the rules say so. But why on earth has Zuma got bodyguards, we as the taxpayer are footing the bill for, he holds no position in government at all???

andre 11/18/2008 1:37:23 PM

Smanga Zulu 11/18/2008 1:38:20 PM
If Lekota wants bodyguards... Let Cope pay for them. He is no longer state's problem. Why should we [taxpayers] pay for his minders...

Dan 11/18/2008 1:38:58 PM
Does Jacob Zuma have body guards? You bet! Which ministerial position does he have?

Honky Tonk Man 11/18/2008 1:39:09 PM
What the hell !!! I agree that state funded body guards should be withdrawn. Only the president and VP should have. If the rest of the prima donna's want protection, let them pay for it out of their inflated salaries. Why should we, the tax paying citizens live in fear every day and still have to fund protection for these clowns. This goes for the blue light brigade too. If they are doing so much good for the citizens of this country, they have nothing to fear.

KK 11/18/2008 1:41:14 PM
I want Francois to explain exactly what he means by monkey mentality ?

Gogga 11/18/2008 1:42:41 PM
The signs are all there. Disrupting COPE meetings, delaying tactics by frivolous objections to their name, name-calling, rumours of an early election, and now taking Terror's bodyguards away. These are the signs of the ANC running scared. Very scared.

Shan 11/18/2008 1:47:38 PM
Does Jacob Zuma not have bodyguards paid for by the state, not becuase he is a government employee, but becuase he is a public figure, and head of a political party. Likewise, Lekota, Zille, etc should also be afforded police protection. Or is this (yet another) case of one set of rules for Anc memebers / supporters, and another for others.....

C O P E 11/18/2008 1:47:48 PM

Zola 11/18/2008 1:50:16 PM
Mr Blade Nzimande is also not a Minister and yet after he pocketed R500 000, he was given police protection. Same applies to Mr Zuma, who is still enjoying government protection. This decision was surprisingly reached after the ANC NWC meeting. Mr Mantashe you are good.

Agree 11/18/2008 1:54:47 PM
I agree with Thaps. No funds can be used to advance the interest of private individual. Lekota should have thought about loosing this lucrative benefits before tendering his [usual] divorce.

Lucas 11/18/2008 1:55:10 PM
Your time is up boss, we understand your frustrations, you are no longer part of government why do you want to enjoy the bennefits? Just get over your-self and come back to reality.

KK 11/18/2008 1:55:16 PM
I wish and pray for the future of this country that COP wins and ANC can be out of power for a while until they come with a decent proposal and leadership to the people. This kind of ANC leadership that we currently see is an embarrassment to South African Politics, Kgalema, I kindly invite you to join the COP now Bra you don't think in the same level as those palookas in the Luthuli House.

Boby-guard se foot. Why can't he ask Shilowa to pgive him money he stole from Gautrain or Lekota himself sell farms to get protection.Rather he use the weapon he stole in SANDF.
