Mbeki's choice gets gold star

2005-06-22 17:31

Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki is practising what he preaches, said the commission on gender equality on Wednesday.

Commissioner Themba Kgasi said the challenge was now on the private sector to follow suit and ensure gender equality in top senior positions.

"We are very excited about the appointment," she said. "We congratulate the president on keeping his word and practising what he preaches."

Kgasi said that by appointing Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as his deputy, Mbeki was leading by example and ensuring democracy was fulfilled.

"But the big question now is what is happening in the private sector?" she said. "White men still occupy the top positions."

Mbeki appointed Mlambo-Ngcuka as deputy president to replace Jacob Zuma, who was sacked last week.

Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille said the appointment showed faith "in women power".

She said she hoped "my sister (Mlambo-Ngcuka) will shake down some of those non-performing male ministers".

"After all, we women can multitask and hopefully she can perform where those before her have failed."

Asked about claims regarding money going to the ANC through Imvume and oil and gas company Petrosa, a parastatal, she said that normal procedures should take their course.

"If there is a need for her to give evidence, she must be called to account."

The African Christian Democratic Party also added its voice to those congratulating Mlambo-Ngcuka.

ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe said: "She is a respectable woman with a warm, acceptable attitude towards members of the opposition.

"She is one of the ministers who always received credit for running her department well; we trust that she will do an equally good job in this new position.

"We wish her well and look forward to a fruitful working relationship," said Meshoe.
