Baghdad - A marine died during an operation in Iraq, bringing to 1 000 the number of US troops killed in action since last year's US-led invasion, the marines said.
The marines said, without giving further details, that the marine was killed in Al-Anbar province, which hosts the rebel hotspots of Fallujah and Ramadi.
Pentagon statistics released on Tuesday showed the number of US military personnel killed in action was just under 1 000, and with Thursday's death it had now reached that figure.
Of the total, 889 were killed since US President George W Bush announced the end of major combat operation in May last year. The figure included three civilian defence department employees.
55 soldiers, marines die
According to an AFP tally, 134 US soldiers were killed in November, one less than the most-deadly month yet, in April this year.
The assault on the rebel bastion of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, accounted for more than a third of November's deaths, with 55 soldiers and marines killed between November 8 and 20.
Many Americans were killed in November during the first two months of the invasion.
On September 8, the US military announced a death toll of 1 000 total deaths, of which about a third were non-combat deaths.
