Baghdad - Ousted dictator Saddam Hussein was hanged on Saturday, officials said, as Iraq braced itself nervously for possible reprisals by his remaining supporters.

"The execution of Saddam Hussein is complete," state television said in a text headline broadcast against a background of Qur'anic verses.

"Saddam Hussein was hanged until death ensued. A black page in the history of Iraq has been turned," it added in a second news flash, as joyful popular music filled the airwaves.

Mariam al-Rayis, an adviser to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki who attended the execution, said in an interview on state television news: "It was between 05:30 and 06:30.

"The whole thing was filmed."

Rayis said the execution was witnessed by a judge, a prosecutor and journalists.

Saddam's Jordan-based defence team, which largely boycotted the year-long trial, made one last desperate shake of the dice by going to court in the United States to demand that the ousted despot remain in US military custody.

Backlash

But US authorities in Baghdad insisted that the detainees have been under Iraqi legal authority for more than a year and were only being held in an American military base as a simple security precaution.

Security officials fear a backlash, however, from hardline factions among Iraq's Sunni minority, including the Islamist and nationalist militant groups that make up the deadliest elements of Iraq's violent insurgency.

Ahead of the verdict, the head of Iraq's interior ministry command centre, Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf, told AFP that the country's beleaguered security forces were on high alert.

"Certainly, this is a big event, putting into effect the execution of this serial killer," he said.

"We will take measures proportionate to this event.

"We will put all our forces on the streets so that no lives are jeopardised."

josh 12/30/2006 7:30:22 AM
i wish our appeals process in america was this good....

HENRY 12/30/2006 7:32:24 AM
I THINK IT IS GOOD THAT HE WAS HANGED. IT IS TIME THAT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT MUST BE REINSTATED IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Bob Evans 12/30/2006 7:43:20 AM
This is somthing that needed to be done three years ago.

rainview 12/30/2006 7:45:20 AM
I will neither weep nor celebrate the death of Saddam Hussein. Strand by strand, Saddam constructed the rope that hung him. He got what he earned and deserved.

Jim Taylor 12/30/2006 7:47:21 AM
Well done!

masindi 12/30/2006 7:54:45 AM
by hanging him means the american troops would come across several death

Kara 12/30/2006 7:59:49 AM
2 wrongs do not make a right.....

Aaron 12/30/2006 8:06:40 AM
Its a great day for the world. Kara why dont you and your wanna-be hippie friends go and smoke a little dope, sing kumbya, and light a candle for poor ol' Saddam? Those of us who have not smoked out our brain cells know that this is cause for celebration.

Victor Flores 12/30/2006 8:07:15 AM
President Bush is just as guilty of having civilians killed in Iraq. Where is his justice?

Scott 12/30/2006 8:07:58 AM
If only justice were this swift in America. Kara is right, that two wrongs don't make a right. But there was nothing wrong in the killing of Saddam. Now let's hang the rest of his clan.

Tom Harris 12/30/2006 8:08:54 AM
I believe that they should have gassed Saddamm, because of the way he gassed the innocent Iraqi citizens.

Bill Clinton 12/30/2006 8:10:11 AM
Dear Leader is next baby!

Jesus Quinones 12/30/2006 8:13:08 AM
Kara, two wrongs might not make it right but it rights 180,000+ murders.

Cheryl 12/30/2006 8:16:54 AM
I'm usually against the death penalty. The scum should suffer a life time in a small cell without TV or reading material. Not in this case! Totally EVIL man!

Kaneahi 12/30/2006 8:18:00 AM
Justice delayed is justice denied. Justice was finally visited upon a brutal and unrepentant dictator. May peace be instilled in the hearts of those who have lost loved ones at the hands of this criminal.

The Colonel 12/30/2006 8:18:19 AM
If he had a pair to begin with he would have never come out of that spider hole alive. Gutless coward came out on command while he had a loaded pistol on his hip. Nancyboy!

Charles 12/30/2006 8:19:36 AM
This Demon of a Man killed 1000's of innocent people in his own country , this was a long time coming. Now what is next. Will it finally be the end of the violence in this place . Only time will tell. Peace in Da Middle East. Sincerely, H-Town,Tx.Hommie, !Charles~

"For the wages of sin is death..." He got off easy. Unfortunately, those that he brutally killed were not as lucky. Hell is going to be hot for him! People need to be aware that there is a consequence for their actions. "Be sure your sin will find you out..."

Stan 12/30/2006 8:21:13 AM
"2 wrongs do not make a right" Saddam's hanging was not a wrong it was punishment for his brutal crimes. Justice is not a wrong, especially when it is swift.

press toe 12/30/2006 8:23:24 AM
"2 wrongs don't make a right" (Kara) So you are suddenly appointed the judge of right and wrongs now?

James 12/30/2006 8:24:09 AM
South Africa should do the same to killers there...

Mark 12/30/2006 8:25:47 AM
I hope the other dictators like the president of Iran & Korea see the hanging of Saddam.Saddam was an evil And Sick basterd. His two other sons got the esay was out(BOOM). They all should of been laid over an ant bed with honey poored on them for the torcher and the suffering he caused his own people.

Ant 12/30/2006 8:26:00 AM
I don't know how to feel about this. After the US invasion of Iraq, a lot of people were killed - AGAIN. No weapons of mass destruction were found. Sure Saddam did wrong, but the US also did some horrific things during their invasion - is somebody going to answer for these acts ? Hope Saddam's was the last life taken .... it is a sad world we are living in ...

Cal D 12/30/2006 8:27:16 AM
We should of not involed ourselves in iraq. Where are the weapons of mass destruction? And where the hellisour real enemy Osama?

Samer 12/30/2006 8:28:52 AM
The Arab people (which I am one of) will only get closure from the death of Saddam. No soft so-called "civilized" punishment will be accepted such as life imprisonment. This was the best for the people of Iraq.

Vuyani Ngoyi 12/30/2006 8:28:58 AM
I really never expected him to be executed so soon but that was the right thing to do whether done sooner or later.... .

Marina McGee 12/30/2006 8:29:40 AM
For a country that has never had any semblance of a justice system, I say bravo! Quick and just!

Mark 12/30/2006 8:30:00 AM
They should of all been laid in a field full of Army ants with honey poured on them and watch them suffer for the torchering of his own people.

Mornac 12/30/2006 8:43:56 AM
Will that be appearing on YouTube before or after lunchtime?

Ian 12/30/2006 8:44:20 AM
Are you really serious?? Do you think Saddam was just going to have a warehouse full of nukes waiting for us? He knew damn good and well we were coming 5 months before the invasion. If you don't think those weapons were shipped to the desert with the help of Syria and Assad then wake up.

Satan 12/30/2006 8:44:38 AM
Man! I got a lot of work to do now!

STEVE 12/30/2006 8:46:24 AM
SOME RETARDS DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE MURDERED BY DESPOT AND WHOLE FAMILIES MURDERED BY SADDAM . IT IS GOOD THAT HE IS DEAD . STEVE

Kat 12/30/2006 8:48:04 AM
A hanging isn't good enough for Saddam....man I hope he's not turned into a martyr. And, I hope this boosts our troops over there who are fighting this fight so we don't have to, in our streets, with our children.

Benjamin 12/30/2006 8:48:52 AM
Don't you just love the bloodthirsty comments, yes he did much harm, war does that, will we be ready when our judgement comes, Christ will determine that and your self righteousness will not pardon you.

Daniel Howard 12/30/2006 8:51:36 AM
A bullet in his head would have suited me better!

John Wilkenson 12/30/2006 8:51:53 AM
Killing someone is a God decision. Generally speaking, only God (the Giver of Live) can know when a human life is of no further value to anyone. For that reason, the death penalty is generally morally unacceptable and hypocritical. However, "government" necessitates an important exception to the anti-death-penalty rule. No One-Ring addicted "king" (or Prez) ever gives up Power voluntarily. Until he is dead, his followers will cause trouble. Hence the wisdom of the hanging. Call it Karma,Kara

Kat 12/30/2006 8:53:09 AM
No matter how you feel about the current administration, please keep in mind 2 things: 1) many of us have family in Iraq or Afghanistan that need our support 2) there may not have been a direct connection between Saddam and 9/11, but there were signs of his chemical testing (on his OWN people) being taken further. JUST REMEMBER HOW YOU FELT on 9/11!!! Do you EVER want to feel like that again? I don't. I want my children safe.

Anne 12/30/2006 8:58:06 AM
Hey Cal--you must be a liberal. People were spouting the same kind of crap when the US had the testicular fortitude to take on Hitler. BTW--Germany never attacked us either. To quote Edmund Burke "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Go back and read your history lessons.

Rick 12/30/2006 8:59:10 AM
That which we created we destroyed. Saddam was a US/Soviet creation of the Cold War. We created the monster. It was our responsiblity to get rid of him. It's about time.

Louise 12/30/2006 8:59:56 AM
How utterly barbaric!! It makes his executioner a murderer too

David 12/30/2006 9:00:38 AM
Victor, so let me get this straight: Civilians who die in the midst of fire between coalition and Iraqi soldiers and insurgents/al qaeda make bush as much a killer as saddam who points out people to be executed and intentionally gasses and kills thousands. Your moral equivalence makes it impossible to take you seriously. You're just another person who whines about people that actually DO something about injustice as opposed to doing something yourself.

SEM, Qwaqwa 12/30/2006 9:06:22 AM
The Death of Saddam Hussein will not end killings and crimes in Iraq. I think Iraq will be destroyed and America and its allies will secure all the oil. In short, this war began a long time ago, even before Saddam was born, it's war between religions, it will never end!

critical thinker 12/30/2006 9:08:43 AM
Saddam did not do anything without consulting the Saudi Royal family & the Bush family - now they have killed one of their own. Is this going to help Social Security? Are my wages and quality of life going up - directly because of this event? Does this eliminate the DEFICIT?

Kyle 12/30/2006 9:13:41 AM
Honestly....how can you possibly compare Bush to this clown? Bush didn't TARGET civilians. Guess what: in war innocent people die! It happens, look at all the innocent Serbs the liberals killed in bombings while going after Milosevic! Why no cries of war criminal against Clinton and the Euros? The International Left conspires to condemn conservative free world leaders while giving a pass to dictators and despots. This "right wing = nazi" language is EXTREMELY dangerous

Philip 12/30/2006 9:13:43 AM
The weapons of mass destruction are those crazies who strap bombs around their waistes and then blow themselves up together with a lot of innocent people!!!!

Rick 12/30/2006 9:14:04 AM
The war was not looking for new weapons of mass destruction. Saddam was asked to account for weapons ALREADY INVENTORIED after the 1st Gulf War. As usual he refused to comply. Whether he shipped them out or destroyed them, all he needed to do was answer to the inspectors on what happened to weapons WE HAD ALREADY SEEN AND TOUCHED. A very evil man has been served justice...

Andrew 12/30/2006 9:21:25 AM
I am not sure that this will do anything for the victims', their families or the world for that matter. Surely hanging an already old and ailing man is a reward more than a punishment??

mel 12/30/2006 9:26:15 AM
This is a great day for the Iraqi people, but it is not an end to the violence and bloodshed there. There is too much hate in many of their hearts for any peace soon. God help them all!

bodybag 12/30/2006 9:28:19 AM
Sadaam = dead for killing 148 peopple. Found guilty in a biased US military court. 52,000 are dead in Iraq since the illegal invasion. iraqbodycount.org

Chris 12/30/2006 9:29:31 AM
I'm so sick of listening to all you liberal idiots that cannot think for yourselves. Stop listening to the media and liberal professors and think for yourself. Just because you hear something on T.V. does not make it true. Who cares if they didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. We do know Saddam helped finance terrorists. By the way, if we lived in a country where the leader tortured and killed us, would we not want help? How would you like to be an Iraqi citizen and not get help?

Eric 12/30/2006 9:31:54 AM
What is all this talk about WMD's? Don't you people pay attention to the facts or do you just bye into CNN's pathetically biased reporting? WMD's were not the only reason we entered Iraq. What about freedom, democracy, rapes, murders, tortures, 17 UN resolutions, support of terrorism, and other reasons? Why is it so hard for the liberal mind to register the facts instead of concentrating solely on WMD's which he clearly had since he used them against Iran and the Kurds? Pathetic. Wake up.

Vic 12/30/2006 9:43:20 AM
I defy anybody who has been watching the accounts this evening of the reign of terror that Saddam put the people of Iraq through to tell me that we had no business going into Irag. The world is a better place than it was about five hours ago with no Saddam. Would it be that we had the cojones to go into Iran and take care of the madman that's in charge of that country.

Jim 12/30/2006 9:43:57 AM
Where is Osama? Where is the real perpetrator of this War On Terror? Saddam was the easy target. No WMD's have been displayed. We have only heard "he said/she" said on this issue. The testimony of Iraqi officers and politicians attempting to save their own skins. The invasion of Iraq was wrong, it was based on faulty information and fear based rhetoric. Osama should have been the primary target all along. Where is he, Georgie?

Jerry 12/30/2006 9:45:55 AM
I say Bush is the real criminal. Why isn't he scheduled to be hanged?

NKS 12/30/2006 9:46:06 AM
No matter what we think about his execution he was still a human being, Only the Lord will decide now what his fate is.....Highway to Hell !

Joey Alberto 12/30/2006 9:53:46 AM
Very few people dispute the horror some people experienced in Iraq under Saddam's rule. He was immensely cruel and savage. But how will his execution help heal the people of Iraq? Also, during the Christmas period where love and reconciliation should be the central theme in our lives, I'm amazed at the blood thirsty opinion of the majority of the comments. Having said that, no-one I know was affected by his blatant disregard for human rights so maybe my thoughts are too objective

Michelle 12/30/2006 9:59:20 AM
Well done!!! The judicial system in South Africa should learn from this!! Hip Hip Hooray! BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY IN SA!!!!
