Rome - Giuliana Sgrena, the Italian journalist wounded by United States troops in Iraq as her month-long kidnap ordeal was coming to an end, was discharged from a Rome hospital on Thursday nearly three weeks after her return from Iraq.
Sgrena, a 56-year-old correspondent of the communist daily Il Manifesto, underwent two operations on her lung and shoulder after being hit by a bullet in the "friendly fire" incident which killed her rescuer, Italian intelligence agent Nicola Calipari.
The incident strained diplomatic relations between the United States and one of its staunchest European allies after Rome demanded an explanation for the killing, which is currently the subject of a joint investigation.
Sgrena had been in Rome's Celio military hospital since her return to Rome on March 5. Calipari was given a state funeral with full military honours and posthumously awarded a gold medal for bravery. - AFP
