Baghdad - Eleven Iraqi police commandos were killed and 14 other people wounded in a suicide car bombing in Ramadi Thursday night, a US military spokesperson said.
Among the wounded were two US soldiers, nine police commandos and three civilians, said marine Captain Jeffrey Poole.
The bomber also died.
"A car driven by a suicide bomber blew up at a checkpoint in eastern Ramadi," said Iraq General Mohammed al-Azawi, head of the interior ministry commando unit for al-Anbar province.
Azawi said he knew of three commandos killed and three civilians wounded.
US and Iraq forces set up additional road checkpoints in Ramadi in February.
The insurgent stronghold is at a key crossroads in Iraq, 100km west of Baghdad.
The elite commando unit was sent to the region recently by Iraq's interior ministry to quell the violence. Its base in Baghdad has been hit twice by car bombs since October.
