Baghdad - Four Iraqi civilians were killed and 20 wounded on Saturday when a huge car bomb hit central Baghdad as a convoy of four-wheel-drive vehicles passed, an interior ministry official said.
The three sports utility vehicles, of a sort widely used to escort prominent Iraqis or foreigners, were burned out by the blast, witnesses said.
There was no immediate word on foreign casualties, if any.
The booby-trapped vehicle had been parked on the central Tahrir Square, near Saadun Street. Nearby shops were severely damaged and at least eight other vehicles destroyed.
Several private security guards, carrying Kalashnikov rifles, were at the scene of the explosion.
The capital has been hit by dozens of car bombs in recent days. Close to 300 people have been killed in insurgent attacks this month.
