Tikrit - The severed heads of nine policemen were found in the central Iraqi city of Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein and the capital of Salaheddin province, on Saturday.
Two boxes containing the heads were tossed out of a speeding car, said a police officer.
The overwhelmingly Sunni province marked the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Saturday, a time of prayer and introspection across the region, as violence in the country increased.
About 500 people demonstrated in downtown Tikrit on Thursday, calling for the release of ousted president Saddam, currently on trial for the genocide killings of 182 000 Kurds between 1987 and 1988.
